Surgeon Testimonial

Virginia McGrath-Weaver M.D.
I haven't met Dr. Weaver yet, but I have spoken with or met her staff. I have been impressed by their professional, courteous manner. They have patiently answered my questions and addressed my concerns. Phone calls have been answered promptly. I received guidance and assistance working through the steps to submit paperwork for insurance. I am currently waiting to hear back from Tricare Prime regarding approval for this procedure.

I selected Dr. Weaver after hearing so many positive reports from former patients and other medical professionals.

The support program is very helpful if you're considering weight loss surgery. Many continue to attend monthly meetings who had surgery years ago; they confirm my decision to seek treatment with Dr. Weaver. You can call the office for meeting dates -- I was pleased to find out there's no charge and no pressure at these gatherings -- just respectful, informative, caring men and women. It was exciting to hear stories from people who have had this surgery, are continuing to work the weight loss and maintenance program, and are living healthier, richer lives.

Welcome! Hello to my sisters and brothers here on OH. Thank you for visiting my site. It's so good to know we don't have to make this journey alone. I'm usually a very private person, but promised myself I'd share my journal -- I have been encouraged by reading the messages here on OH and watching the journeys of others who have gone before me, that I want to do the same for anyone who is considering this surgery or for those who've already had weight loss surgery.

Surgery So Close
on May 27, 2008 3:46 pm
5/27/08 -- It's hard to believe it's nearly here. Surgery will be Friday morning. Anxiety is pretty tough so far this week. Bag is packed for hospital, following liver shrink diet, preparing foods for post-op. Family is ready. I've had a lot of preparation with classes, research, etc., but that was a while ago -- hoping I remember the guidelines. I've enjoyed meeting people on this site and appreciate all the support. I've learned so much from everyone here -- it makes it easier because I don't feel I'm alone on this journey. I believe this will go well.

Surgery Soon
on May 20, 2008 7:36 pm
Surgery date has been moved up from 6/2 to 5/30 -- only a few days, but a bit unsettling, also exciting. I'm ready though, and also ready to start recuperating. The liver shrink diet is going well. I started it a week early, and with the surgery moved up I'm glad I did. It's become easier now that I've been on the diet for a while. I had all the pre-admission tests yesterday at the hospital and filled out the paperwork. There have already been many, many steps on this journey. I researched options and doctors for many months before applying to Dr. Weaver's program at Saint Francis hospital in February. So I feel well-prepared as the surgery date approaches. Ten more days before surgery day.

Protein Shakes started
on April 14, 2008 4:27 pm
I've started substituting whey protein shakes for some meals. An OH friend, Leticia, recommended I start adding them now in preparation for surgery 6/2. Leticia has been so successful; I didn't hesitate and began following her advice immediately. I learn something new almost every day on the site -- what a gift. I've completed all requirements for surgery and am gathering information and items for life on the loosing side.

Surgery Date 6/2/08
on April 6, 2008 7:37 pm
Yes, the date's set. It seems so far away. I've had some down moments since hearing how long it will be, but have begun to realize how I can use this time to learn more and be better prepared. The hopechest is growing and I'm both anxious and fearful about beginning this wild rollercoaster ride I've been reading about. I've been praying that I won't continue to be so obsessed with all this. I have another nutrition class this week; I love learning all this new information about healthy living.

Appointment w/Sugeon Set on April Fools Day!
on March 24, 2008 9:22 am
Another step closer. Got a call from a lady named Jeanette in Dr. Weaver's office. I will be seeing Dr. Weaver next week, 4/1/08 -- on April Fool's Day! I'm looking forward to learning more about this whole process and hearing her plans for my surgery and program. I'm working on a list of questions to take with me. When I was having my upper GI test done last week, several folks complimented Dr. Weaver and said she would be their choice if they were having this surgery. This made me feel better. I know they hear many comments about surgeons in this area. Also, I'm glad to report I've had no more melt-downs since last Friday evening. I even went out and bought a Magic Bullett to put into my new hope chest. I picked up some special lip treatment to take to the hospital, and I began feeling a new commitment to this process. I know I'm going forward.

My Story

My story -- like many of you, I've fought this weight thing since childhood. My first diet was at age 8 and the battle has never stopped. I've tried many, many diets and here I am, preparing for weight loss surgery in June. Initially I was feeling ashamed to admit I have been unable to lose the weight and keep it off; I was too embarrassed to admit I would have to resort to surgery. By meeting some really fine folks in person and on sites like this one I've learned a bit more about this devastating issue. How wonderful it is to live in a time when we have access to surgical tools and medical guidance. It took a lot of courage to make this decision and following through with the many preliminary steps. I've already learned to appreciate the information and support received from sojourners on these OH forums. I'm pleased to join y'all as we take this path to healthier lives. God bless us all!
