Surgeon Testimonial

Mario Longoria, M.D., FACS
My first impression of Dr. Longoria was positive. He has an excellent bedside manner tempered with a straightforwardness that is extremely refreshing. He was thorough in his education about the various surgeries available to me and how I might respond to each one. My opinion of him has continued to be positive through preop and surgery. I felt I was in good hands and never once questioned my decision to choose him as my WLS surgeon and look forward to a lifetime doctor/patient relationship with him.

I see him in the new office in Round Rock and the staff there seems confused/flustered most of the time. They're sweet, but honestly I had to not only tell the receptionist that they had the wrong surgery on my chart but she had never heard the term RNY/roux-en-Y. I was not happy about standing in the waiting room with others waiting saying "I'm here for bariatric surgery!" Paperwork really should have been completed in the back of the office in privacy. Scheduling surgery was a little flustered as well, but did eventually work itself out after a couple of weeks and after that there were no more hiccups. *Update: On my first postop visit the receptionist recognized me right away and check-in was a breeze.

The nutritionist and the exercise therapist are both super and I look forward to working with them more in the future.

Overall a strongly positive experience.

No regrets but...
on August 16, 2010 10:34 am
I worry.  I've not had any trouble eating.  In fact, I'm excelling at eating it seems.  And in contrast, I'm doing lousy at getting my fluids and protein shakes in.  I almost envy the people who have no appetite and struggle to get in their daily meals.  No problem here.  The trouble lies in keeping me to just 3 meals and I find myself digging for something else to eat if I only eat 2 oz at a time.  I do seem to go longer before I start looking for the next meal if I eat 3 oz but I know that's too much.  I'm tired of feeling food/fluid obsessed!

12 days out
on August 14, 2010 1:05 pm
Well, I'm 12 days out from my surgery today.  Surgery wasa breeze and I had virtually no pain.  I've not had any problems eating or drinking and if you didn't tell me I'd had surgery and if I didn't have the incisions to prove it, I'd be hard pressed to believe that I had.  That being said, I am struggling with getting my daily water in and I know my protein isn't up to what it should be yet but I'm working on both issues.  At my 10-day postop appointment I was down officially 20 pounds from my preop appointment weight and since my scale at home is neurotic, I really don't know how much weight loss was before or after.  Either way, I'm thrilled!  I completed missed the 250s and that's awesome all by itself!  I was cleared for pureed foods at my appointment and it's like being released from prison.  Everything tastes so savory and delish after creamed soups (not that I haven't thoroughly enjoyed my red lentil soup, corn and lemongrass soup, potato and leek soup, etc).  I'm a little concerned about portion size in pureeds though.  I seem to be stuffed by 2 oz with some meals and can easily consume 3 or 4 ounces in others.  I'm assuming it's because I'm still eating such soft foods and my full meter will be more accurate with regular foods.  Next week I get to start soft foods and if tolerated, I will move on to regular foods a week after that.  My next followup appointment is 4 weeks out.  Meantime, while I'm not a size down (I'm way to big for 20 pounds to change my size) my clothes are fitting more comfortably and a couple feel too big in the neck already.  I've decided to delay my fall classes.  It's just too much dealing with trying to get my protein and my fluids in and a 16 year old and school.  I'll go back in the spring and I think I'll rock it better than I could have a year ago.  I also get to start working out at the first of September.  I'm so excited to try out my underwater mp3 player and the local rec center's indoor pool and weight room.  In the meantime, I walk a half block a day every evening.  It doesn't sound like much but it's more than I was able to do prior to surgery.  What a fantastic ride I'm on!
