Surgeon TestimonialShawn Garber, M.D., F.A.C.S.-This is my personal opinion of Dr. Garber -
I really liked Dr. Garber. when I first met him, he answered almost all of my questions before I even asked. I like the fact that he has done over 2000 of lap RNY surgeries. His office is packed!!! I guess that comes with a great surgeon. Dr. Garber has an excellent aftercare program - I was impressed at how structured the follow up will be :) He fully discussed the benefits and risks of the surgery. He told me to call or email him with any questions that I may have after our consult. I did take advantage of emailing him and he emailed me back pretty quick - usually in a few hours. He requires quite a few pre op visits in order to be cleared for surgery. The office staff is friendly and try to keep things moving.
Stephanie - office manager at Dr Garber's office is amazing and a sweetheart :) She is SO helpful. She is organzed and KNOWS her stuff.
Sharon, The nutritionist is encouraging and supportive.
Donna Franco, PA - is wonderful!

Yippee!!! I had my surgey on 11-6-06

Starting weight 250.5 (11/6/06) ~ *at goal* 142 (10/6/07)
I am a "before and after" in OH magazines Jan/Feb 2008 issue!

Going down! 4 days ago
Yep - that is correct! I am headed back to GOAL, it feels pretty darn great! Finally -- MY head is in the game. It' about time.
This weekend - we went out to dinner with an old high school friend and his wife. I hadn't seen him in about 5 years or so and last time I did I was Morbidly Obese. His eyes just about popped out f his head when he saw me and at dinner he said. 'YOU are so skinny, the skinniest I have ever saw you, ever - you are a little tooo skinny!' I have to tell you that felt great. Just Another reminder - about how far i've come, and a knowing of where I NEVER want to return ... to obesity.
I was talking with Paul - (MY hubby and biggest supported) - Remember ing when .... I was morbily obeses moments.
I remember when...
* I was uncomfortable all of the time (because of my weight)!
* My feet ached so bad, when my daughters woke up in the middle of the night more than 1/2 of the time Paul would have to go get them because my feet ached soooo badly!
* I went to social functions - dreading them - so consumed by being the fattest girl in the room.
* How I owned a pool but didn't dare go in it - when i had company over.
* How I looked at pictures ofmyself and how heavy I was and CRIED!!
* How - I could only watch my girls play on the swings - i was too tired to get involved!
Those are just a few of the painful memories that I have, however, they are memories , I treasure and hope NEVER to forget, because they remind me - of how far i've come and how much healthier I am today!
I feel amazing, confident, beautiful, sexy ... life my friends, is so good!
hugs,
Britt

Where have I've been .... on June 25, 2008 10:41 am
Hi all,
I’ve been MIA (in posting on my profile for a while) Still struggling a bit trying to get back to 142. I’ve been off track for a while and seem to have SUCH a difficult time getting back on track. I will have a few good days then a 1 or 2 bad days, it really stinks! I hate it. I am praying for a good week! An entire good week, which is what I really need!!!! That is my mini goal. I cannot understand how I just can’t *pull it together* I know I need to take baby steps… 1 day at a time. I just want to be back at 142 - well, yesterday!!! (can you say impatient?)
The summer and all of the parties, get-together’s and mini get-a-ways don’t help me in getting back on track.
Plus the gas prices and $$$$ stress is another factor. Still, I need to learn how to deal with life and not use FOOD and GRAZING as a crutch or to medicate me.
I know that I have the power to do this …It’s time to dig deep Britt!
Hugs and love!

Acceptable 4 Me on May 20, 2008 8:29 am
I can make myself crazy with the scale ... a work in progress. I want the scale to say 142 - 140 -- E*v*E*r*y*D*A*Y* -- that isn't always the case. There is a *normal* in weight. This is normal! So I have a new Acceptable # on my scale. My goal is 142 (100% of my excess weight loss) I will allow a 5 pound fluctuation. So as long as my scale reads 147 or less, I am OK with that.
hugs,
Britt

Back to decaf on May 16, 2008 3:29 am
One of the rules post op from my surgeon is to drink only decaffeinated beverages. I switched to decaffeinated coffee pre op and was fine with it. Early out of surgery I lost my taste for coffee period. Six months later I was making my hubby a cup and it smelled delish! I had a cup, it was regular, and i was hooked ... back to drinking regular coffee. Soon after I found AchievOne protein drinks ... which are delicious ... but contain the caffeine equivalent to 2 cups of coffee. I love love love them. My nutritionist gave me the ok for 1 a day (there are days when I drink more than 1 a day plus my regular coffee).
Here I am 18 months out. I have been drinking caffeine for a year. I know that its not right, not following the rules. I've decided to follow all of the rules ... all of the time. That is what works!
So right now I am sipping a cup of decaf coffee (it tastes great!) and once I finish the Achievone drinks I have left I am not buying them any more. 1) They are $$$$ 2) I don't need to supplement and If I do I have a great protein powder in my pantry to use.
18 months out - little things are back in my life that I committed to changing. I am not invincible - I have regained weight and I am determined to get back to my goal weight. I *know* that me not following all of the rules, all of the time is the reason I gained.
I found this from wiki answers on the web. - Reading #2 for me is a real eye-opener ... I have reactive hypoglycemia issues. Another GREAT reason to rid caffeine.
hugs,
Britt
Caffeine is very bad for you, especially if you are trying to lose weight. It is very interesting when I see pages like this where people are constantly trying to defend their unhealthy addictions. Here are just a few reasons why caffeine is bad for weight loss:
- It raises Cortisol levels in the body. Cortisol is a hormone that is responsible for fat storage in the body. I dont think we need any help there. Have you heard of the weight loss product Corti Slim. It basically blocks Cortisol from doing it's worst, storing fat. The guy you hear on the radio and see on TV forgets to tell you that a MAJOR cause of Cortisol production is caffeine. So quit the caffeine and leave the Corti Slim on the shelf.
- It causes your blood sugar to spike. Then after the caffeine begins to wear off your blood sugar plummets. This causes you to crave sugar. In other words you think your hungry when you're really not. This is obviously counterproductive to your weight loss goal. Have you ever noticed you crave carbs after a cup of coffee. This is why. Your body is tring to get you to eat some carbs to get your blood sugar back to where it should be.
- The end result of caffeine is really fatigue. After caffeine wears off youare tired. Then you have more caffeine. Then you are tired. Ect... By the end of the day most people who drink coffee are exhausted and they dont know why. This fatigue makes it difficult to exercise which is a one of the most important ways we should be getting our energy.
I hope this is helpful. I have done major research on caffeine and can tell you honestly, it's bad for you. What you read here is just the tip of the iceberg.
What is important for everyone to remember is that the caffeine industry is a billion dollar industry. The truth about caffeines negative health effects are kept in the closet by many large companies.
So my advice is to give it up. You will be much happier and healthier in the end.

The little things count! on May 9, 2008 1:34 pm
I use www.fitday.com to log my food. It helps me to keep track of what I am taking in and makes me aware of things like "wow - today was a high fat or carb day."
It all counts everything that you take in albeit a drink or food, it counts.
Let's say you are having ff / sf jello (10 cals 1 carb 2 protein) light whipped topping (15 cals 4 fat no carbs no protein) and you add 1/2 and ounce of chocolate sprinkles..... (72 cals - 4 grams fat 9 grams carbs 0 grams protein) for 1/2 an ounce!!!!
Sometimes we don't realize the extra little things = calories that we are taking in. Pay attention.
a 25 calorie snack easily turned into a 97 calorie snack .... hmmmmm - something to think about - huh.
hugs,
Britt

Change for a lifetime on April 30, 2008 3:42 am
"It's not what you are, but what you don't become that hurts."
- Oscar Levant
I like this quote ... it is so true. The decision to have RNY and change my life is a lifelong commitment. It isn't about making the changes until you reach goal. I know, first hand that if you do not continue to live your new healthy lifestyle - the weight will come back.
This is life, and for *me* this is a diet that I must follow forever *if* I want to maintain my weight loss (and I really want to maintain my weight loss!).
sending hugs,
Britt

My FAVORITE, FAVORITE classes at my gym on April 12, 2008 8:12 am
The first class that I love is either 60 minute or 75 minutes long depending on which day you take it, they both kick your hinny, a really great, challenging work out. The instructor is intense and is so good at teaching this class. His voice, the music he plays, it gets your heart racing. He has a kind of drill sergeant persona and voice. OK... You are on a staionary mountain bike; So you get the picture. You start off on the x-bike he lowers the lights, pumps up the music and you start peddling - at little or no tension. He tells you "increase the tension 2 clicks down" and you go!!! He keeps telling you to increase the tension - your body feels like no I cannot do anymore then he starts counting you down ... 8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1 ....only to tell you "tension all the way down - up and climb" you stand up and push climbing up a big hill! He has you alternate between standing and sitting climb. This goes on for 30 minutes with all different variations. He always changes it up. Very challenging. Then you get off your bike - Dripping with sweat! He does something different every time. Last class he set up and exercise ball - step, weights & tension circle at each station. He has you doing squats and lifting weights simultaneously!! Your legs are shaking. No BREAKS IN THIS CLASS. put your weights on the step and its push up time. Man he is tough - there is NO QUESTION when you leave his class you know *that you worked your body out hard, challenged yourself and didn't waste 1 second of your workout* In about 1 hour I burn about 500 calories.
OK... my next favorite class is YOGA - this instructor is amazing as well and perfect in her role as our instructor. This class challenges you and just mentally helps me in life. I look at it as exercise for my soul. It rocks!!!! The positions are challenging. Yoga IS NON-JUDGMENTAL - all that matters is what is going on on *your* mat. It is great - its about how you are practicing. The instructor has a great way about her she pushes you if she thinks you can go further and gently corrects your position if needed. Love her! If you haven't tried Yoga - give yourself this gift ... it is awesome! In 1 hour I burn about 160 calories.
Hugs,
Britt

Been Thinking ... on April 8, 2008 3:24 pm
After my last entry- I've done some soul searching ... and you know what? Those people who say...
"it's only 6 pounds"
"you are too hard on yourself"
...and so on are right!
I have a blessed life *why* do I allow the scale and the number on it dictate my mood?
That is ridiculous - the more I think about it, the more I see how right *they* are , so right! I have an unhealthy relationship with the scale. I do however think I need it to keep in check - however, the that # that appears should NOT dictate how I feel. That is a fact!
Something I have come to realize .... something I am working on.
Thank you to *you* who said those words to me, thanks!
hugs,
Britt
