Mohamed Ali, M.D.
Dr. Ali is very good. He will answer any questions, no matter how long they take to answer, and he really knows what he is doing. I have complete faith in the UC Davis Bariatric Program. It is very thorough pre-op and prepares you very well for post-op life.

Hi there!
My name is Ananda and I'm 30, happily married, and obese.  I wouldn't normally introduce myself like that, but this is ObesityHelp.com.  :)

I had a surgery date for October 2004 going through Kaiser in Sacramento, but I lost so much weight during the pre-surgery diet that I thought I could do it on my own after all, and I cancelled the surgery.

Guess what?  I gained it all back, plus 40.

In Feb of 2007 I actually did have the surgery with Western Health Advantage and the UC Davis Medical Program. Even though I lost a lot of weight on the pre-surgery diet I knew better than to cancel again!  I give the experience an a+

I'd like to make friends on here, to share info and give support!

Almost there!
on September 16, 2008 11:01 am

Well, I only have 20 pounds to my ultimate goal.  My skin is really a trip... it's loose like clothes, but attached.  It floats to the surface around me when I get into the pool or hot tub.

I'm so much healthier and I really feel great.  I can do anything now.  I can walk, jog, keep up, etc.  I never feel fatigued anymore.  I feel great!

When I get to goal, I'll start working on the plastics.

Hope you're well if you're reading this!

It works as long as you work it!  Ananda

Made my surgiversary goal!
on January 28, 2008 4:07 pm

Ok, I made it! I got under 200 pounds before the first year of my surgery was up! I did it with a week to spare, too! I'm still losing. I'm still WORKING to lose, but now I don't have to think too much about it. I just do it. I eat on plan.  It isn't a diet.  It's my life.

To anyone reading this:

This surgery isn't about work arounds, it is about working within the perameters provided and learning to love it.

I used to love feeling full.  Now I hate feeling full.  People CAN and DO change.

11 months post op
on January 8, 2008 2:17 pm

OMG skin!  It's everywhere I don't want it to be!

I don't really care too much, though... I did this for my health.  but my skin IS a side effect.

So, month 11 and I'm down 148 pounds.  I'm at 204 so my goal of being under 200 for my one year aniversary is probably going to happen.

I still take my vitamins.  I still drink all day.  I still go to the gym like a good girl.

Life is good.  As a side note, my husband has lost about 50 pounds of sympathy weight.  He could stand to lose another 30 or so to be 'thin' but I'm sure he's healthier from the 50 he's already lost. :)

9 months out
on November 8, 2007 8:11 pm

I'm 9 months out and down from 352 to 219 as of this morning.  That's 133 pounds gone.  I think that's what my sister weighs, total. :P

I'm just going to keep it up.  Eager to see how I'm doing at my 1 year post op in 3 months.  I want good labs. :)

My Story

::PRESURGERY STORY::

Well, As I said above, I'm 29, and very over weight.  I've been happily married for 5 years, I have a great supportive family comprised of my parents, who are still together, and my sister and the family she has made.  My sister has a husband and two daughters.  My husband has three children, but I have none, so I'm a step-mom.

I've been overweight since I started having periods.  My family has a lot of diabetes, heart attacks and obesity in it.  I have Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome, which helps me keep my weight going up up up, and has several other symptoms, like unwanted hair (on my chest and cheeks, like a guy) and it makes me infertile.

I've tried a lot of diets, and I've always been really successful.  I've lost the same 50 lbs about 10 times over.  I'm looking forward to a life change, this time.

I love my job as an adult affiliate manager for webmasters.  I told all of my co-workers, and bosses, and didn't keep any part of the process secret.  I wanted all the support I could get.

I enjoy going to the gym.  It makes me feel really good to excercise.  I feel fatigue a lot, but when I work out for half an hour, it cuts through the fog I feel in my mind, so I've been really grooving on it lately.

I went through the surgery set up and approval with Kaiser in 2003/2004.  Their system for approval was pretty slow, but that was ok with me at the time, because I was scared.  I waited 8 months for a surgery date, and then got my surgery date six months out.  I lost so much weight on my own in that time that I cancelled the surgery, only to slowly regain all of that weight plus 20 pounds over the last few years.

The UCDavis medical center program that I'm in now was much faster for me, this time around, but that was because I was ready.  The approval and tests and surgery date were all within 3 months.

I've been on my own presurgery diet for a while now, to mentally prepare.  I've lost 20 lbs, and I don't miss the foods anymore.  I just have a little mantra that food is just fuel to make my body go.  I say it when I'm feeling weak, until the moment passes.  I take this surgery very seriously, so I haven't cheated yet.

Right now, I drink a pro-complex 55g of protein shake with 1 cup of nonfat milk and 1 1/2 cups of ice for breakfast.  I eat a EAS Advant EDGE carb control nutrition bar for lunch, and then I try to eat a healthy dinner.  For example, last night I ate a steamed artichoke with a tablespoon of mayo for leaf dipping, a skinless chicken thigh and leg, and 2 potstickers from the deli.  I keep the diet between 1200 and 1400 calories, with around 90 oz of water, and 100 g of protein a day.

 ___________________________

My surgery is tomorrow.  My husband was reading a profile on here and he saw someone's goal list and he asked if I had one.  I didn't really, but I figured I would make one.
