Surgeon Testimonial

Charles Bollman, M.D.
*Note Dr. Bollman and Dr. Stevens did the surgery together. Dr. Stevens was my primary surgeon for aftercare.*rnrn Dr. Stevens is small in stature. Not intimidating. Dr. Stevens was very up front about the risks of the surgery and that this has to be a life style change. Also stressing that this shouldn't be a decision that one should consider lightly. The two doctors (Dr. Charles Bollman and Dr. Scott Stevens) that do this surgery at Geary County Community Hospital in Junction City KS; are truly dedicated to making the morbid obese person's life longer and more productive. These two doctors were doing this long before others jumped on the money making band wagon. They both show the precise amount of knowledge, care and compassion to make every patient feel like their only patient. I would rate these doctors 20 on a scale of 1-10. I would not intrust my life in the hands of any other doctor('s) for this procedure. I also have to note that Eileen (Dr. Boleman's nurse) and Karla (Dr. Steven's nurse) are awesome as well. I call Karla my angel, she is the earthiest, kindest, most soft spoken, gentlest, giving, beautiful, loving spirit I have ever known. There is nothing she would not do for her patients. I am confident that all will go well with my surgery, because I could not, in my opinion; be in better care anywhere else with anyone else. I know we aren't suppose to rate excellent on everything. But honestly I cannot think of anything negative to say about the doctors or their staff.rnrnrn**This is my insurance info**rnrnAetna, PPOrnI actually changed insurance from Coventry Health (HMO) to Aetna PPO in January 2003. Coventry would not pay for this surgery, they deem it \"cosmetic surgery\". It is amazing to me how many insurance companies are so ignorant still of the plight of the morbidly obese. Or maybe they just don't care. Probably they just don't care. Well, I switched to Aetna PPO as soon as possible, which was the beginning of the year, because they do pay for this surgery. I had a co worker that had the surgery in 2000 and she had Aetna PPO. So, I knew I would be okay with this insurance. I couldn't believe they turned me down on my first application. They had a new clause in the plan. Not only did you have to be 100 pounds overweight and have a doctor deem this medically neccesary; but you have to within the previous 2 years have 6 months of doctor supervised weight loss and excercise program. So, even though I had been fighting my weight my entire life, and had tried every diet and excercise program under the sun. I still had not had what they wanted. So, they denied me. Well, long story short. I got them on appeal with a technicality. Since I switched insurance at the beginning of the year there was a delay getting authorized for surgery. This new clause went into effect January 17th, so on appeal we contested that I had tried to get authorization prior to the new clause. I guess they felt that was the case because shortly after my appeal I got approval. So, for anyone else that has Aetna PPO bottom line is YOU MUST BE 100 POUNDS OVERWEIGHT, HAVE A DOCTOR DEEM SURGERY A MEDICAL NECCESSITY, AND HAVE 6 MONTHS OF DOCTOR OVERSEEN DIET AND EXCERCISE IN THE PREVIOUS 2 YEARS BEFORE SUBMITTING FOR SURGERY. Hope this helps someone else. Actually, I am glad that in the end they are paying.~ rn

I know you are one of the twins though - that is so cool that the two of you had it done. I have been at all the meetings except one since January. I was the girl who sat in the corner by the door next to the lady in the wheelchair. I was less than 1 week post-op at the June meeting. I will be 5 weeks post-op by the next July meeting. I was definitely glad to gt my GT out. It was so annoying. I had some trouble with mine leaking a little around the site. Anyway - I am feeling much better. Mommamere — Virginia Hanson 05/10/2003 10:21 PM Hello everyone sisters and brothers suffering from obesity. I am doing well. I can't believe it is only 18 days until I am on the losing side. I can't wait to be a loser. lol. I had my pre-op tests done on May 5th. All went well. At least I haven't heard to the contrary. My edg was a breeze. Really you guys anyone who has to go through pre-op and have these tests ran, it truly isn't that bad. The nursing staff and everyone is so comforting and takes such good care of you. And, nothing is bad. I was actually quite relaxed. My weight has been going down, down, down,..yeah! At my consult on April 1st. I weighed in at 381, now actually this was down from 398 at the beginning of the year. Well, Dr. Stevens said he would like to see me lose another 30 pounds prior to surgery. I told him "I can do that." Well, on pre-op day my weight was 366, so in 21 days that was 15 pounds down. And, I just keep going. So, I feel just great going in. I've been keeping active since my consult knowing this will only help me afterward. Also, I cut all the sugar out of my diet for lent. Now, I just didn't pick it back up, since I can't have it after surgery anyway. So, I realize this is helping me melt the pounds away. Before I was just a sugar addict. Well, I will keep things updated as they go. Hope everyone stays well. Keep your heads up. And, thanks to all who have posted very nice messages for me, that touches me deeply.~ — Anastacha 05/08/2003 03:37 AM Best wishes and extra prayers for smooth surgery and recovery. 45 Pounds in 3 Months (seems slow)-August 30th,...
on August 30, 2003 12:00 am
August 30, 2003....weight 314

I am so excited, went to the doctor the other day. I'm down 45 pounds in 3 months. Dr. Stevens said that was good. I see him again in November for my 6 month check up. He said he would like to see me lose another 45 by then. I am going to lose another 55 by then. My goal is to be down 100 pounds at 6 months. I know I can do it. I've been eating better, exercising more and drinking more water. So, it should melt off. I'm going to be really working it. I can't wait to be under 300. It is so close, it really is exciting. Finally seeing some results of everything I've been through. Have a support group meeting coming up September 9th, can't wait. Then we have an anniversary party coming up for Liv Lite in October. That will be a blast also. It's nice to be part of the post op numbers. Well gotta go. Best of luck to all my wls friends.

Just Over 3 Months Out and Doing Good-August 25th,...
on August 25, 2003 12:00 am
August 25, 2003....

Hello everyone. Everything is good here. I've been tracking my food intake on fitday.com I've been consuming about 900 to 1050 calories a day and burning three times that much. I need to get more active actually. I mean I'm always on the go, but need to focus on really working it. Need to get back to walking the football track, it has been so unbearably hot out that I haven't done that in a few weeks. I still am consuming more carbs then I would like, but I have cut way down on them. Also, definitely have been getting all of my water in. I drink 64 oz every day at work, then I drink more in the evenings but I don't keep track because I already have my minimum goal taken care of. I'm excited about seeing Dr. Stevens on Thursday 8/28. That is my 3 month check up. I can't wait to see how much weight I've lost. I try not to think that much about my weight but how my clothes are fitting. My clothes are fitting much looser, but it is hard to not care about the number on the scale. Well, I'll close for now. I'll update again after I see Dr. Stevens. Wish me luck..lol. God Bless!

Summer at the Lake Again-August 17th, 2003
on August 17, 2003 12:00 am
August 17, 2003....

Hi everyone! I hope you all are well. I am doing good. Nothing came of the stomach pain I was having the last time I updated. It must have been contispation. It did take a few days to clear up, but I felt better after about a week, no more stomach pain. I just got back from the lake. It was so much fun camping. I remember last summer at the lake. What a difference a year and 72 pounds makes. I didn't have a swim suit that fit me last year. I had ordered the very largest size that the Lane Bryant catalog sold and it was to small for me. This summer I wore a size smaller than the one I ordered last year and even though I still looked bad in it, I could wear it comfortably and I could swim in it. It was unbelievable how much energy I had for walking to the shower house and just walking to the lake from the camper. Not to mention being able to sit in my fold up chair with arms and not needing help from someone else to pull me out of it when I wanted to get up. I can't wait until next summer at the lake. It is only going to get better. I have my 3 month check up with Dr. Stevens the 28th of this month. So about 11 days away. I am very excited to weigh in and see how much I've lost. I am 26 pounds (as of my last weigh in) from being under 300 pounds. I cannot remember the last time I weighed under 300 pounds. It would have been at least 15 years ago. I remember when I got married in 1988, I weighed in the 200's. That is the last time I remember being under 300. I am really shooting for a goal being down 100 pounds by the end of the year. Dr. Stevens says this is where he wants me to be, so I'm going to try very hard to get to that goal or beyond. Well, good luck to my WLS friends, pre-op, or post-op. Take care and God Bless.~

Down 33 Pounds- August 3rd, 2003
on August 3, 2003 12:00 am
August 3rd, 2003....Weight 326

Hello WLS friends. I hope you are all well. I'm doing good. I'm down about 33 pounds in 2 months. Doesn't seem like a lot but I know I just need to bide my time. I also know I haven't been utilizing my tool to the best of my ability. I've been eating too many carbs and not enough protein. I do get all my water in but I need to crack down on my eating. I've also been getting my exercise. I walk about a mile a day. I know I should be doing more, but a mile is tiring for me. I'm trying to work up to more. I also do some stretching and try to do some weight lifting. Not anything really structured but I do get something done everyday. Not much else to tell. Oh yeah, I have been feeling rough for about a week now. It started last Saturday night (July 26th). I just started having stomach cramps and kinda feeling nauseated. Well, I asked the doctor if I should be concerned when it was persisting. He said it sounded like I was contispated even though I've had a few bouts of diarrhia. I could never spell that..lol. Anyway, he told me to take some milk of magnesia and see if that helped. Well it helped a little. It's two days later and I'm still having some stomach pain. If it doesn't get better he wants to do an xray to make sure there isn't a blockage. Man 2 months out feeling great and now that. I hope it isn't anything bad. I really have been lucky so far. No problems to speak of with food and so forth. So, just hoping for the best. Wish my bowels luck guys..lol. Toodles~
