2 weeks post op
on July 19, 2008 6:30 am
Well, I finally did it!!  I had surgery July 7 and I am so glad it's finally happened.  I have waited so long!  I have lost 16 lbs and I really never had much pain from the incisions.  I'm back to work today and feeling pretty good!!  I am getting more excited everyday, because I am starting to get the hang of this, yeah it's taken me almost 2 weeks to get this down, but I'm doing better.  Every morning is like Christmas, I wake up real early and weigh myself (I know, bad habit, but addicting!).  I am loving life!!  Well, gotta go, Misty

Finally!!
on June 7, 2008 7:30 am
I finally have a surgery date!  July 7, 2008.  I finally finished my 6 months weight management classes and my nutrition evaluation, exercise consult, and Psych evaluation.  They turned in all my stuff to my insurance company on May 23 and I found out I was approved for surgery on May 28.  Wow, that was really quick.  My doctor is going on vacation for a few weeks so I can't have surgery till July 7, but that's ok, I get to eat on 4th of July!!  My last real meal!!  I can not wait, I am sooooo excited, my dreams are about to come true!! Yeah!!  Well, guess I better get back to work, I will write more later and let ya'll know how I'm doing!!

Sept 26---  Finally I had my first consultation with WLS surgeon.  He was really nice and I got to meet a few other people hoping to have surgery.  The Dr. said that I am definitely approved to have the surgery thru him so now I just have to get the insurance to approve me.  I have to go thru 6 months weight management and get a nutrition consult, exercise consult, and psych consult and I will be ready for surgery in April if all goes well!!!  I am so excited!!  My first appt for weight management is Tues. Oct 9.  Can't wait!!  Well, I'll let ya'll know how that goes!!!  Misty

Doctor gave a referral!
on August 28, 2007 2:11 pm

Aug 28---  Today I had a doctor appointment with my pcp for a referral to the gastric bypass surgeon.  I was so nervous talking to my doctor because he has put me on diets and told me to exercise and I was afraid he would tell me that I didn't need surgery.  But, he said it was a good idea and I should do it!!  He said he would give me my referral and include all my health problems and all the information they would need.  I am so excited, now I don't have to worry about that part anymore!

Learning all I can!
on August 25, 2007 6:41 pm
8-25-07----  Today I  have been reading the book "Weight Loss Surgery - Finding The Thin Person Hiding Inside You!"  by Barbara Thompson.  It's a very good book by someone who has been through WLS.  The book is very informative and I learned a lot from it.  I am beginning to think that my first appointment will never get here.  I haven't even really started yet and I have a long way to go.  I can already tell this next 6 months are going to pass by soooooo sloooooww.  I am really not nervous about the surgery, I had my gallbladder out this time last year and they couldn't do laparascopy so it was an open procedure.  I got a hernia from that surgery and just had a hernia repair in June of this year.  I have had 3 c-sections my belly is so scarred up that a few more scars won't hurt!  Just as long as I look good in my clothes when I lose weight, I'm not gonna be wearing bikinis or anything.  Gonna keep reading all I can and am looking forward to seeing the doctor to see if he thinks I need the surgery.  I think he will definitely think I should have it done.   Misty

My Story

Hi, my name is Misty, I'm 31 years old and I weigh 255 lbs.  My BMI is 42 and I am hoping to have RNY gastric bypass surgery.  I took the first step a few weeks ago to start the new journey of finally losing weight.  I called and made my first appointment with my surgeon for a seminar and one-on-one consultation with the doctor.  My mom had the same surgery with the same doctor 2 years ago and she has done so well that it has made me want to change my life.  I have been overweight since I was a child.  I think that I really started having a problem in high school.  I weighed 175-190 all thru my high school years and I was very self conscious.  I tried to be invisible and not bring attention to myself.  I felt like I had 2 heads or something, I was just very uncomfortable.  I remember one time in 6th grade a stupid boy looked at me and said "eeeewww, you're ugly"  and I will never ever forget that, even though he was a nobody and wasn't anything special!  I never was the "going clubbing" type, but I did go out a few times.  One time when I was out, some guy walked by me and said "why don't you just go home?".  Oh, I was mortified, I felt like no one would ever dance with me unless it was a joke.  I am now with the love of my life and we have 3 beautiful children.  He loves my like I am and has only known me as a heavy person, but he says that he understands how bad I want to lose weight and knows I won't be happy until I do, so he is being very supportive.
I think that I have a good chance for approval from insurance because of my BMI, but I also have severe acid reflux (GERD), heartburn, and severe headaches.  I have a high risk for diabetes, my mom and dad both have it and I have had gestational diabetes with all 3 of my pregnancies.  I think I may be developing sleep apnea because I am told that I snore worse at night than I used to and I also catch myself gasping for air at nite.  There are a lot of other problems that I have like depression and of course all the other problems with being large, like sitting in a booth is getting tight, all chairs seem REALLY small, can't take long bubble baths anymore because I don't have any water in the tub once I lay down, or I cant see it anyway.  Any way, this is part of my story.  Good luck to all of you, Misty
