Hello everyone! I've been lurking here at OH for years, wishing and hoping that someday I'd have the opportunity to have WLS. I've always been big... I clearly remember being 8 years old and hoping to get down to 100 lbs, and the horrid diet that the doctor had me on that year (what kid brings a salad for lunch to school?? How embarrassing!).
I have struggled with my weight all of my life, although I did have a brief taste of victory years ago when I went from 225 down to 129. I didn't maintain it though -- two successive pregnancies took their toll, and then things just sort of snowballed from there. When I hit 40 it was like someone turned on the "fat" button... on top of the extra weight I was carrying then (about 50 lbs), I put on even more. My husband died, I put on weight. I lost my job in the dotcom crash, I put on more weight. I dieted, it refused to go. I exercised to no avail.
Then in early 2006 -- the day after Valentine's day -- I met the man who is now my husband. He didn't have an issue with my obesity (man, that's a nasty word, isn't it??) and he truly loves me for me and NOT my "tonnage" LOL Ahhh, the power of a good relationship! I tried again to lose weight, did the yo-yo thing and finally we started discussing WLS. We agreed that it would be a good thing for me, but our employers' health insurance would not cover any sort of weight loss treatment.
Then in November 2007 I was diagnosed as insulin resistant. I have a bunch of family members who are diabetic (and having problems) so the prospect of becoming diabetic truly scared me! I cleaned up my act eating-wise and eliminated most of the junk, the sweets, the bad stuff... started getting a bit more exercise and cutting back on the amount I eat. I'm quite proud that I've managed to bring my fasting glucose back into line... but doggone it, absolutely NO weight loss.
The blood sugar scare spurred me to action. I started researching WLS on the sly, hoping to find an answer. I discussed it again with my husband, and he said to keep doing the research and the answer will come. And it did -- a nice bonus at work, a fat tax refund, a raise and the tax incentive check helped out considerably... and we could more than cover the rest with the one savings account we'd earmarked for special expenditures.
So, I went made my decision: lap band for me! I sent inquiries to a number of surgeons -- local, in the US, and international. After a whole lot of thought and another spate of research, I have chosen Dr. Roberto Rumbaut as my surgeon; we have set May 29, 2008 as my band date.
I am excited and a bit scared, but very happy and determined! I know the road ahead will not be easy, but I have the support of a loving family (two of which are also considering WLS) and wonderful friends. I am on my way!
If you feel like saying hello, please do!
