Surgeon Testimonial

Cameron Hodges, M.D.
After researching WLS for many many years I finally decided the time was right to have it done. I looked into many doctors and hospitals where I may go to. So I started looking right here at home an I found out about Dr. Hodges so I set up an appointment to see him. I had read his reviews and testimonials, and he looked good on paper. It took only the first meeting with him for me to know in my heart he was the one I wanted to do my WLS. The next several appointments I had with him just reinforced how I felt about his skills and the way he cared about me. He made sure I understood everything I was going to go through, and he pulled no punches about having WLS at my weight. He wanted for me to loose as much weight as possible before my surgery. He and his staff are the best, they ALL treated me with respect and concern about my WLS journey. I called on his staff several times for different things and they never acted like it was too much trouble to answer my questions. I would recommend Dr. Hodges and his staff to anyone who is serious about changing there lives through WLS. Dr. Hodges, My wife and I would like to thank you from the bottom of our hearts forgiving me a chance at a new life.

Welcome to my journey. I am a very happily married 48 year old man, who has been overweight most of my life. My wonderful wife Brenda rescued me from Pa, and brought me to Missouri after meeting on the internet. I moved here in July of 1999 and we were married in December of 1999, and have a wonderful relationship.

Back to school
on September 6, 2008 9:53 pm
Well after giving it a great deal of thought I have decided to give college a try. When I was in High School I was involved in the audio video club and we did things like recording sporting events and we had a radio station I helped operate.  So now I am enrolled in Ozark Community College and am going to earn my associates degree in Electronics Media Production in hopes I will get a job in one of the local TV or radio stations in the production department. So far school is going well, I have to take some math and reading classes to get back up to speed on things since it has been almost 30 years since I have been in school.  It is a 2 year program and luckily for me I got federal grants to pay for everything

Best ever annual physical
on May 9, 2008 1:03 pm

Last week I had my yearly physical and it was by far the best one I think I have ever had. My doctor was so impressed with my results and how much I have changed. The first time I went to him my weight was 613 pounds back in 2006, and my labs were lousy. Now I have lost 388 pounds and my labs were awesome. The only thing that was a little low was my iron level, and the only reason that was low was because I had run out of my iron pills and the pharmacy took 2 week to get my prescription refilled because they had to find a different supplier. It is just amazing how different I feel from just a year and a half ago. Just in the past few months I have been able to do things that even amaze me. It is truly a blessing to have a second chance at life by having WLS and working the tool for all it’s worth.

Here are some of my lab results, the complete list is on my profile.

Heart pumping back up to almost full power.
on April 29, 2008 2:08 pm

Back before they did my hernia and PS they did a angiogram of my heart to make sure I could withstand the surgery. They discovered that my heart wasn’t pumping as well as it should be. It is called the injection fraction rate, it is the fraction of blood pumped out of a ventricle with each heart beat. The doctor told me my rate should be between 50 and 55% but my heart was only pumping at 33% and that was not good. He said the reason in my case that it has gotten so low is because of all the years of being obese and that even it was possible that at one time I may of even suffered a mild heart attack. This condition can be corrected in most cases with medication so he gave me 2 different kinds of heart medication and told me that in 90 days if my heart rate is not back up to 50 to 55% they would need to install a heart defibrillator. Well I had my test and my heart rate is now back up to 53%. I am so happy I sure didn’t want to have to have a defibrillator installed. I will have to keep taking the heart medications to keep my heart pumping at that rate, but it is a small price to pay to keep from having a defibrillator, besides the 2 medications are only $4.00 each a month. I don’t know what I have ever done to deserve being so lucky in surviving all different obstacles that I have encountered in my life, most of all having a second chance at life having my RNY surgery. I thank God every day for all he has done for me, I just hope I am worthy. Alan H

New OH groups Men's locker room online support group
on March 24, 2008 1:01 pm
The OH groups is new and even I am still learning what all I can do with it. The reason I started it was to give us guys another place in addition to the Men’s locker room men’s board to go to. The men’s board and all it’s members mean so much to me, they have been one of the greatest tools for me in my WLS journey. In creating the OH groups men’s locker room was NEVER intended to replace the Men’s board, just to add another tool in the arsenal to provide support. All my life I have had a passion to help others, I have my father to thank for that. My father started the ambulance service in the town I grew up in PA, and was a volunteer fireman. So needless to say helping others is how I was raised. I followed in his footsteps and was an EMT, and a volunteer fireman all of my life until my weight stopped me from being active. Then dealing with being overweight most of my life also plays an important roll in my passion in doing anything I can to help people in there weight loss journeys. Well enough about that now about the group. First of all OH groups has just been set up for OH support group leaders to see how they work out. In the future OH groups will be available to any OH member to have there own group. Also in future releases I will be able to do more things like bulk e-mailings, because now I have to send out messages one by one to the membership. My hope is for the members of the OH group will use the message board like they do on the men’s board. I also want to have meetings in the chat room, and it will be up to the membership when and what time, and how often the meetings will be. This OH group is for the members to set it up to fulfill the needs of the members, I welcome any and all input.  So as of right now the group is 110 members strong, and I thank each and everyone who has joined. I also hope I haven’t offended anyone by starting this group and calling it the Men’s locker room group, if I have I deeply apologize. Like I said above it is just that the Men’s locker room has inspired me so much. As far as finding the location of the OH groups I even am not sure how to find my own group from the main screen, I will have to talk to the powers that be to find out where people can find us at. For now the best advise I can give is use this link http://www.obesityhelp.com/group/bigal2029_group/welcome/ and go to the top of the page and use the bookmark to bookmark the group. Than you everyone. Alan Hartman

My hernia and skin removal surgery experience.
on February 18, 2008 1:48 pm

Well Thursday February 14 was the day I have been waiting for, for some time now. It was the day of my hernia and skin removal (pannectomy) surgery. I was first hoping to have this surgery by the end of 2007, but due my insurance company taking so long to approve the surgery I had to put it off until February. Well the first thing I had to do was find me the best surgeons for the job. Well there was no doubt who I would pick for my hernia repair, Dr. Edwards one of the doctors that was involved in my RNY surgery, and who is the doctor who has been doing all my post-op care. Dr. Edwards and I have been talking and planning my hernia surgery for a long time waiting until the time was right to have the surgery and being able to do it safely and the best chance of it healing safely and properly. As far as the doctor to do the skin removal surgery I chose Dr. Shah. I attended a symposium put on by St John’s hospital, and Dr. Shah was the guest speaker talking about Plastic surgery. After listening to him and how much he cared about his patients, how he wouldn’t do surgery unless you were physically ready to have surgery and I could tell how he was very concerned about your after care and safety once you were home and that you had a support system at home to make sure you were going to heal properly. He also said that he had worked with Dr. Edwards many times before. So I knew this would be my team.

I reported to the hospital at 5:00 am, and did all the pre-op stuff and went into the operating room about 8:30am. When I woke up I looked at the clock and it was 4:25 pm. The nurse saw that I was awake and she asked me if I was in any pain, but I felt ok and told her no. She said she wanted me to rest for a little longer and then they would take me to my room. When I got to my room my wife was waiting and she told me that both doctors talked to her and said that everything went well no problems, and they removed 10.6 pounds of skin. I was hoping for more, but like someone said to me how often can you go to sleep for 6 hours and lose 10.6 pounds. They got me hooked up to my pain med pump and gave me the happy button to press when I needed it. I was still a little groggy and I went back to sleep. The next time I woke up and was more aware of things I looked at my incision and I excepted to see a boat load of staples or stitches, but to my amazement they glued me together. I had two drains and some thing in a black bag. That was a pain bulb called the On-Q pain buster The small balloon is connected to a tiny specially-designed tube that the surgeon places near the surgery site. ON-Q begins soaking the site with pain-numbing medication immediately after surgery and works continuously for up to five days. Now as it turned out Dr. Shah checked out the pain bulb Saturday morning before I went home and he discovered that the hose line had a kink in it and I wasn’t getting any of the medicine, but it worked out for the best tho because he unkinked the line and now I would be getting the medicine to come home with and would help for the next few days at home since I no longer had my happy button to press for pain. So between the oral pain meds they gave me and the pain bulb the pain hasn’t been to bad. The worst part is sitting and standing up. I am so glad they used glue to put me together, because it may cut down the time until I can get back to swimming and going to the gym. I really miss not being able to work out.

After looking at myself I just can’t believe how different I look, Dr. Edwards and Dr. Shah did a super Job. I have had contact with many doctors over the years from the time I lived in PA and here in Springfield, all of my doctors, at St. Johns that have taken care of me have been the best and most caring I have ever had, and I know it I have a problem or need something done I know I can count on them to get the job done. It is not just the doctors either it is the support staff, in the doctors offices they are the best also. In my option St Johns hospital is the best hospital period.

Home from hospital -no blockage BUT
on January 18, 2008 4:05 pm

Well just like the story of my life I was given some good news and some bad news about my heart. The angiogram showed that there was no blockage in my heart or around it, not even a trace of blockage. Now the bad news. From all the years of being morbidly obese it has taken it’s toll on my heart, my heart even shows signs of a heart attack at some time. Bottom line is my heart is only pumping at 33% efficiently, and it should be at 55%. They said it is like stretching a rubber band over and over and eventually it won’t go back to it’s normal size. They put me on Coreg, Lisinopril, and Spironolactone to try and get my heart pumping back up to 55%. Now here is the kicker if the medications don’t get my heart pumping to 55% in 90 days I will have to have a heart defibrillator implanted. They started me on the meds in the hospital but each time they give them to me my blood pressure drops dangerously low, so I am on the lowest dosage they have and I have to keep a very close eye on my blood pressure. The one good thing out of this all is that at least it is not bad enough to keep me from getting my hernia and skin removal surgery on Feb 14. So now it will be a wait and see thing for the next 90 days.  Alan

Stress test shows heart blockage.
on January 12, 2008 10:09 am

As some of you already know I have been have had a few problems in the last few months with pain in my chest and dizzy spells while lifting weights. The first diagnosis was an irregular heartbeat and they gave me Atenolol. They started me off on 25 mg per day and it worked for about a month then I had another attack and they upped the dosage to 100 mg per day and it has been working so far. However as a precaution due to the fact I am scheduled to have my hernia repair and skin removal (panniculectomy) surgery done on February 14, 08, they decided to send me to have a stress test on my heart to make sure my heart is ok for surgery. Late last night I got a call from the hospital telling me the test results showed a moderate to severe blockage in my heart. So on Tuesday I have to report to the hospital for an angiogram and right after the test is done I will be admitted for treatment. I hope they can clear this up quickly so I can still have my surgery in February. This really sucks, all my life I have been overweight and even at my highest weight I never had any problems with my heart, now I have lost weight, eat healthy, exercise, I am in the best physical shape I have ever been in in my entire life and NOW I have problems with my heart. Well I use to joke that if I ever hit my goal weight with my luck I would get run over by a bus. I guess this is close enough.

Chest Pains round 3
on December 15, 2007 8:42 am

Well after the last round of chest pains I thought the new medicine my doctor gave me It was going to the job, well I guessed wrong. On December 3 2007 after a say of a light work out and lap swimming I went to Wal-Mart and then the grocery store, and while I was in the checkout line my heart started going crazy again. The symptoms were as before, pain in my chest some problems breathing and feeling light headed like I was going to black out. I managed to get to my truck and drive home, but by the time I got home the pains were getting worse. I sat in the truck hoping like before the pain would pass but is wasn’t getting any better. I took 4of my nitro pills and that was no help either, so I finally after much persuasion from my wife I called 911. The paramedics arrived and put me in the ambulance and hooked me up to the heart monitor and my heart rate way off the charts my heart rate was going up into the 200 range and throwing all kinds of different rhythms. Once in the hospital they got me in a bed and hooked me up to the heart monitor and my heart was still going crazy. At on point they came in to do a chest x-ray, I was talking to the nurse answering questions, then they sat me up to do the x-ray, the next thing I remember the nurse was shaking my arm asking me if I was ok. I guess I blacked out for a second or so. The ER doctor came in and looked at the EKG and said he had never saw anything like it. He said my heart was doing 3 different thing at one time. He said if my heart was doing 1 thing or the other he would know what to do but since it was doing 3 different thing he was baffled. So finally the ER doctor called the on call cardiac doctor, and all his suggestion was give me one of my atenolol pills. Well by this time 5 hours had passed and the pain went away even before they decide to give my the atenolol. After that they sent me home, and told me to follow up with my doctor. Two days later I went to see Dr. Morgan and he increased my atenolol from 25 mg to 100 mg. He also referred me to go to Dr. Lee who is one of the best cardiologists, but I don’t get to see him until January 8th 2008.

GOAL GOAL GOAL
on December 10, 2007 11:41 am

Well I did it I hit my goal weight today. Back when I first met with Dr. Hodges the doctor who did my WLS, and he told me that he thought it was possible to get down to 250 pounds I thought yeah right this guy is crazy, there is no way I could ever get that low. In my mind I would have been happy at 350 maybe 300 at the least. Then as I started loosing weight I started to realize that it just may be possible to get down to 250. What I did not expect is to be able to reach my goal in just 1 year and 26 days. This journey has just been unreal, and I am still waiting to wake up and it all be a dream. Until I do wake from out of this dream I am going to enjoy every minute of it. I consider myself so lucky, and just lucky to be alive at the least because of the stresses of my different weight I have been on my body from my highest weight of 878 pounds to all the yoyo effects of losing an regaining weight over the years. I just thank God for all he has helped me accomplish, and I hope he will help me continue on my journey. I want to thank Dr. Hodges for believing in me, and giving my life back he will never know how much his skilled hands, and dedication to WLS will mean to me. Also thanks to Dr. Edwards for his skill and care, and support with my follow up surgery , he is also a great and caring doctor who truly cares about his patients. I also want to thank all the guys on the men’s board for all there help and support who have helped make this all possible. I also want to give a special thanks to Cards Fan who has been a great help and inspiration to me in helping me realize that nothing is impossible if you work at it and play by the rules.

1 year anniversary
on November 14, 2007 6:45 am

Well it is hard for me to believe that one year ago today I was headed into the operating room for my RNY surgery that would give me my life back. I remember even having a rough time walking down the hall to be weighed. I even had to be weighed on the scale they used to weigh the laundry carts on. My weight was 544 pounds. As of today I am down to ( and it still doesn’t seem real) 265 pounds. That’s 279 pounds lost in one year. That’s over half my body weight gone. When I first met with my Doctor and he told me I could get down to 250 pounds I thought he was crazy, and now I am only 15 pounds away from that goal. I don’t think however he even thought I could lose that amount in a years time. In this past year I have had some complications that had made me wonder if I made the right decision, but today I can say without a shadow of a doubt having this surgery saved my life. Right now I am in the best shape I have ever been in my entire life. I want to thank Dr. Cameron Hodges for his dedication and skill to my care and him believing in me that I could make my weight loss goals. I also want to thank Dr. Edwards and the entire St Johns surgery center staff for there continued care and dedication to my weight loss journey.

Chest pains Round 2
on October 9, 2007 1:38 pm

Back in December of 06 I had some severe chest pains that I was sure was going to be a heart attack . When I got into the ER they gave me a nitro patch and the pain went away. They did several tests and could never come up with a reason or cause of the chest pains. Well last Tuesday when I was lifting at the gym I started getting light headed and my heart felt like it was going to jump out of my chest. They have a heart rate monitor on the desk at the gym and I checked my pulse and jumped up to 160 and it took about 10 minutes before my heart rate came back down below 100 and another 10 minutes for it to return to normal. After that I felt fine and finished my workout without no problem. Then the same thing happened again on Thursday, and just like before I rested for about 20 minutes and was fine. I just thought maybe I have been pushing myself to hard or something. Then on Saturday I woke up and just walked from the bedroom to the computer, and started getting chest pains again, they weren’t as bad as in the gym so I just went on doing things around the house and the pain would let up some and then get worse then let up again. So after some encouragement from my wife I decided to go to the ER to get checked. Well same deal as before they gave me some nitro and the pain quit. They decided to keep me until Monday so they could do a stress test. Come Monday morning my doctor came in and told me after reviewing all my blood tests and EKG’s he could find noting to indicate anything wrong with my heart and there was no need to do the stress test., and sent me home. The only things he could think of was the fact I started drinking Coffee, or maybe the stress of weight lifting is causing my muscles in my chest are putting pressure on my heart???????. Have any of you guys ever had any problems with chest pain from lifting??????? Botttom line the doctor said go back to my regular routine and if I have any more chest pains take a nitro pill and see if that relives the pain and give him a call.

ct/sacn results
on June 20, 2007 9:37 am

Yesterday I got a call from urologist seems like I have an impacted kidney stone. The doctor is going to have me get some more x-rays before he decides on what to do next. I had the same problem back in 2004 then they had to go up inside me and zap it apart with a laser. I am still waiting to hear from my doctor who did my WLS to find out what he discovered on the ct/scan.

My first CT/Scan
on June 19, 2007 11:05 am

Well for the first time in my life, I was small enough to have a ct/scan done. Over the last 20 years or so anytime I have had a medical problem they never could do a ct scan because of my size, and never got a proper diagnosis. Well a few weeks ago I had some blood in my urine and some unusual pain in my pouch. The last month or so it seemed like I was able to eat a lot more than I had in the pass. Then last week it felt like my pouch did a 180 and just a bit or two of food would make me feel full and even kind of sick feeling. Then on Tuesday morning I woke up with the worst pain in the area of my pouch I have ever experienced, it hurt so bad even after managing to take some pain meds I couldn’t even move for about an half an hour. I called my WLS office and he sent me in for the ct scan. I fit in the ct machine with no problem. One thing that impressed me was that I had to drink some stuff before the test and I was thinking I hope the stuff doesn’t have sugar in it, when they brought it to me the nurse said since I had WLS they knew I couldn’t have the drink with sugar so I had my choice of crystal light to mix in with it, but it still tasted gross. Now I have wait to see what the results of the test find. One good thing out of all this, not being able to eat as much as I had been I dropped 15 pounds this week.

My Story so far
on April 12, 2007 2:03 pm

On April 30th 1960 I was born in Lebanon PA, a small town near Hershey PA the place where they make the candy bars. I was born normal size and weight and was a skinny kid, I have pictures of me so skinny that in some pictures you can even see my ribs. Then about the age of 10 or 11 things started to change. Some doctors think that when I started going through puberty thing in my metabolism started changing also. I do know however I started picking up some very bad eating habits that would stick with me for the rest of my life. Coming from PA Dutch country and having a background of Amish and Mennonite, we ate a lot of red meat and potatoes, we had them at almost every meal. Along with lots of butter bread, and whole milk, and of course you had to finish all the food on your plate so you could have desert even if you were full, and man did we ever have the deserts. My mom was a good cook and a even better baker. We always had a large assortment of cakes cookies and pies to eat any time we wanted, and oh yeah there was always that big dish of candy sitting on the table to help your self to day or night.

As I got older my weight steadily increased and in school because of my weight I had hardly any friend. Girls would have nothing to do with me and even some of my teachers made fun of me. Even with my size I did manage to play sports I was on the football team and wrestling team. I even was in the marching band mostly because I was big enough to lug around the tuba. I was very active even at my weight at the age of 17 I joined the volunteer fire department and at 18 became an EMT, and was an CPR and first aid instructor for the American red cross and the American heart association. By me senior year in high school I was well over the 300 pound mark and that is when I made my firs attempt at weight loss. The way I tried was very foolish. I started taking speed or at the time what they called black betty’s. I would take a hand full in the morning when I woke up and more during the day , and then at night I would have to drink a bottle of Nyquil to go to sleep. Then one day I was teaching a first aid class and we were practicing taking blood pressures and my was 220/150 and I knew it was a result of taking the speed and it scared the crap out of me and I stopped taking them cold turkey.

After I graduated from high school I found a job working for the Federal Government in a public housing complex doing building maintenance. As the years went by my weight kept slowly increasing. Then in the mid 80s there were 3 woman who lived in the complex where I worked that had WLS. All 3 were well over the 300 pound mark and they all had what was called Vertical banded gastroplasty or more commonly known as stomach stapling. The firs woman lost a lot of weight real fast and kept it off. She moved away and I never got to know if she kept it off long term. The second one lost weight fast but in a years time she regained it all back. The third woman had major complication and was hospitalized for several months after the surgery and never lost any weight. So I decided to check into the operation for my self. I contacted the hospital that was doing the operation and they told me they would send me a pamphlet on the possible complication of the WLS. When it arrived it was in a large envelope and was more than 50 pages long on all the possible complications. Not only that but since I wasn’t on welfare and my insurance wouldn’t pay for it I would have had to pay it on my own so it was out of the question. I am so glad I didn’t have the WLS at that time. After the government found it necessary to cut the budget I lost my job with the government.

My weight kept increasing and I bounced around from job to job for awhile until I got a job working in an amusement park in Hershey PA. I started as a ride operator which was a blast getting to operate the big rollercoaster’s and other rides. I was then promoted to being the monorail foreman for several years, and finally promoted to being the office manager of the entire rides department. However me working at the park took it’s toll on my legs, I would be on my feet for 8 to 10 hours a day standing on hard hot black top concrete. I developed venostasis cellulitis in my legs and then I would get blood clots in my legs that would break off and go to my lungs. This happened several times and it almost killed me. Because of it I had to quit working and had to go on disability. Now that I stopped working my weight really started increasing.

By the mid to late 90s I was in about the 450 to500 pound range and the people of PA were very unkind to overweight people. Everywhere I went people would stare, point and make fun of me. It got so bad I just couldn’t take it anymore. I live in a one room shack and for the next 15 months, and I never stepped outside my door. I paid people to bring me food and run my errands. Then a friend of mine I met working at the park who was into computers made me a small computer just enough for me to get online. That’s when a miracle happened. One day I was in a chartroom and I got a instant message from a woman who lived in Missouri. She was kind and caring and understood what I was going through, she was my angel. We talked online and on the phone for several months. It didn’t take long for us to realize we were meant to be together. So in July of 1999 she got on a greyhound bus and came to PA, rented a U-Haul truck loaded all my stuff and me and we headed back to Missouri and on December 24,1999 we were married. We are still happily married today.

After moving here I made another attempt at weight loss I went to a local Doctor who specialized in weight loss, and she put me on several different medications. It worked for awhile and I lost some weight but the effect of the pills wore off, and the fact I was having to pay for the pills that were very expensive. I got discouraged and stop going to her and gained all my weight back and then some. My weight started going up faster than I even realized. Then on October 20th 2001 I woke to difficulty breathing and I knew it was blood clots in my lungs again. My wife called the ambulance when they got there they had to call in the fire department to get me out the house. The fire department had to remove the windows in the bedroom and take me out through the side of the house on a tarp. I tell people I was a potential Jerry Springer show. When they got me to the hospital they worked on me in the back of the ambulance because they had no bed big enough for me to fit in right away. They took all the equipment, x-ray machines ect to the back of the ambulance to work on me. Finally they found a bed big enough for me to fit in and it was equipped with a scale and my weight was 878 pounds. I had filled with fluid and was droning in my own tissues. They told my wife that there was no way I was going to live and if I did I would be on a respirator the rest of my life. This is when another miracle happened. Just by the will of God a pulmonologist named Dr. James Coulter stopped in the ER to see what all the commotion was about, and he took over my care. He told my wife he would do everything he could to save my life. I was in a coma for 5 days and woke to tubes and wires hooked up all over my body. I spent the next 84 days in the hospital. They were pumping me full of drugs to get off the excess fluid and lose weight. In those 84 days I lost 234 pounds. I had to learn to walk all over again. The first day of my therapy it took 18 people just to stand me up for a few seconds. After I got home I worked with Dr. Coulter to try to lose more weight, we tried weight loss drugs again and just like before it worked for awhile but the effects wore off and my weight loss stopped.

That’s the time I decided to look into WLS again but the only places that were doing the surgery were St. Louis and KC. I didn’t want to travel that far. Then I found out that Cox hospital was going to start doing the WLS. I called and talked to the nurse in charge and she told me they were only doing the surgery on people under 300 pounds. She told me if I could get down to 300 pounds they could do the surgery. I told her if I could lose that much weight I wouldn’t need the surgery. That’s when I had my next miracle happen. I found out about St John’s and Dr. Hodges and Dr. Edwards and the weight loss team. I met with Dr. Hodges and he told me he could help me. He said he could do my WLS even at my present weight of 613 pounds. Now came the hard part getting my wife’s insurance (Aetna) to pay for it. I had to provide 5 years of weight loss records, go on a 6 months medially supervised weight loss program including consultations from a dietitian. I also needed a physiological evaluation, and establish a personal care physician. Also I had to meet with Dr. Hodges for 3 consecutive months. The baratric coordinator Mary Trampler was wonderful in getting all my paperwork in order. I was to have gastric bypass RNY lap if possible Dr. Hodges did say he may have to switch to open RNY if there was any problems. I was also to have my gallbladder removed and repair a belly button hernia. After doing all that I needed to I got a call from Mary Trampler telling me I was approved and my surgery date was November 14th 2006. Well as you can imagine I was overjoyed. This was to be my rebirth day.

Because of my past medical history of blood clots Dr. Hodges decided it would be safer if I had a IVC (inferior vena cava ) filter put in. They were going to put in a filter called a Green field filter, this filter could be removed at a later date. The day of the surgery to install the filter thing didn’t go as planed. First problem was I was to big to fit on the operating table, so they decided to let me stay on the hospital bed they brought me down to surgery in. They decided not to put me to sleep instead they were just going to use a local. As they started the operation they ran into the next problem, my veins were so large that the green filter was too small. The doctor decided to switch to another kind of filter called a bird’s nest filter. The problem with this filter is once installed it can never be removed. They had a very difficult time placing the filter, but they got it installed finally
My rebirth day I arrived at the hospital at 6 am to fill out all the paperwork and get ready for my surgery. They took me to a room where I had to sign more papers and change into that sexy gown, slippers and hat, and off to the pre-op room I go. Up to this point I was cool and collected but once I was in the room I was starting to think what in the heck did I get myself into and where is the nearest exit. I get to meet the nurse’s and the anesthesiologist who will be in the OR with me. About that time in strolls Dr. Hodges dressed in a sweatshirt, and sweatpants. He comes over to me and gives me that look of his that says everything is going to be ok. We talk for a few minutes about what is to happen and he puts his hand on my knee and said he would see me in the OR. Now they start my IV’s and take me into the operating room, they move me over to the operating table and get me all hooked up. Dr. Hodges asks me if I am ready, I say yes an before I know it, it’s boom boom out go my lights. When I wake up in the recovery room I am still feel like I am floating on cloud 9 and in no pain. The nurse see’s that I am awake and she asks if I am in any pain, I tell her I am ok and how long was I in the operating room, she tells me just over 2 hours. She said all went well and they would be moving me to my room shortly. My wife told me later that right after my surgery Dr. Hodges came to the OR waiting room to talk to her. He told her all went better than he expected, My liver wasn’t as large as he thought it would be and that I have strong stomach tissues and should make a fast recovery. They put in a drain and the spot they put it in was in a muscle area and may cause some pain. Once they got me into my room they hooked me up to a machine that would administer pain medicine if I needed it. If I was in pain just push the button. The pain wasn’t to bad at first but as it got worse I decided not to play tough guy and I hit the button. The nurses on the floor were great they made sure I had everything I needed and was as comfortable as I could be. They also made sure that my wife had everything she needed to be comfortable too like extra blankets and pillows and would bring her in food for her to eat. The nest day Dr. Hodges came in and told be about the operation. The RNY went better than he expected he removed my gallbladder, I asked him how bad my gallbladder was, he said they stopped counting stones after 20. He also told me he decided not to repair my hernia at this time, it would be better to do it later after I lose a good amount of weight. Unfortunately that was the last time I would ever get to see Dr. Hodges because that was his last day at St. Johns and I was his last patient, and I would have to do my follow up care with Dr. Edwards who assisted Dr. Hodges with my surgery. I didn’t get to walk until the next day because they had to find a walker big enough for me to use. I had little problem getting up and walking , pain was minimal. So the next few days ,I walked and sipped and walked and sipped, and passed my leak teat by drinking that nasty blue stuff over ice I got to go home on November16th 2006.

On November 28th 2006 My right knee started swelling it got as big as the size of a basketball and then a hole opened up bigger than the size of a half dollar and all this nasty looking stuff that looked like rotten liver fell out and about a gallon of puss like drainage oozed out. I went to the ER and they found out I had a very bad staff infection. So I was admitted to the hospital for the next 3 days. They gave me IV antibiotics and cleaned out the wound 3 times a day. They sent me home with some oral antibiotics that cost $1400.00 for a 14 day supply, thank goodness for insurance. I also had to go to out patient hydro therapy 3 days a week for whirlpool treatments to help clean out the wound on my knee.

On December 9 2006 I got up late on a Saturday morning to having chest pains on my left side. At first I thought it was heartburn or something so I took some antacid pills but they were no help, so I had my wife drive me to the ER. In the ER they gave me some nitro pills and nitro spray and baby aspirin, and the pain went away. They did some tests to find out what caused the pain to see if it was a true heart attack or what it was but the one test they needed to do I am still to big to have. They wanted to do a Coronary angiography but they can’t do that test until I am well under 400 pounds. So as a precaution they put me on several different meds including blood thinners and aspirin to try and prevent it from happening again. Not thinking I did just what the doctor told me to do. I never thought about the fact that taking aspirin was a big no no for my new pouch, and that’s what led up to my next big problem.

On January 20 2007 just after the big ice storm here in Missouri it was another Saturday morning and I had gone to the bathroom and I knew I had a big problem. I saw a large amount of blood in my stool and I knew something was wrong. As the day went on I kept getting more and more light headed and dizzy. So back to the ER I go again. When I got there I tried to walk from the front door to the ER desk and almost passed out. Luckily there was a bench just inside the door and I just made it to sit down before passing out.

They came and got me in a wheel chair and took me back in to the room. When they tried to take my blood pressure it was 0/0. At this point I don’t remember much, the next thing I remember was wakening in the ICU with bags of IV’s and bags of blood being pumped into my arms, and oxygen mask on. Over the next 6 days they had to replace 10 pints of blood and 15 pints of plasma and I don’t even know how much IV fluid. What happened was from taking the aspirin when I had my chest pains the aspirin ate a hole in my pouch. They put a scope down my throat and they found a hole in my pouch with a big blood clot half the size of my pouch. The other problem was my blood was way to thin, my protime level should be 2.2 and it was 17.9. That is why I almost bled to death. So now they took me off all my meds. The doctors told me it would take a few weeks for me to get back to normal from all the blood loss, and I would need to start taking a Iron supplement.

On February, 19. 2007 I finally got clearance from my doctor to start working out at the gym. So on that Monday I went to the gym to walk some laps on the track. The next day when I woke up I had a pain behind my left knee. I thought that maybe I pulled a muscle from walking on Monday . So the next few days I decided just to take it easy and see if this would go away. The pain kept getting worse and spreading down to the bottom of my foot. This went on for about 2 weeks without getting any better, so on February 7 my wife had to go to her doctor for a check up so she said while she was at the doctor I should stop in the urgent care to have them look at my leg. Well as it should be no surprise it wasn’t just a simple pulled muscle, it was a blood clot in my left leg. It was blocked from my groin to my knee, so back into the hospital I go again. I think by now for all the times I have been in and out of that place I should have a room with my name on it. Well the solution to blood clots is of course blood thinners, like what almost killed me the time before. Now before they were to put me back on the blood thinners they had to run that scope back down my throat again to see if my ulcer in my pouch had healed. The test revealed that the ulcer had completely healed, and they could start the blood thinners. After 2 days they sent me home with 28 pre-filled syringes with a type of blood thinning medicine in them that I had to inject into my belly for 14 days. This time the cost of the 28 syringes was $3.643.28, like I said before I am so thankful I have good insurance. Now I am also back on oral blood thinners but this time we are keeping a close watch on my blood levels to make sure it doesn’t get to thin again.

After all I have gone through people ask was all this worth the weight loss surgery. Well let me put it to you this way. Since my RNY surgery to date April. 12. 2007 I have lost 132 pounds, since I first meeting with Dr, Hodges in December 2005 I have lost 201 pounds, and from my highest weight in 2000 I have lost 466 pounds, and slowly getting my stamina and health back again, my answer is.

I WOULD DO IT OVER EVERY MONTH AGAIN IF I HAD TO !!!!!!

Update
on December 27, 2006 11:29 am

I wanted to post an update since I haven't posted for awhile. Got a call the other day from my Dr that did my RNY. seems they detected that I had H-Pylori A stomach virus. They detected this before my surgery but wanted to wait until a few weeks after my surgery to treat it. So now they have me taking 3 things for two weeks. Amoxil-Clarithromyc-Protonix.  What else can go wrong??????????

2 week checkup 11-28-06
on November 28, 2006 12:15 pm

Went to Dr. Edwards yesterday for my two week check up. Guess Dr Hodges was still on vacation. He removed my drain, what a relief to get that thing out, it must of been wrapped around my toes or something from as much of it as he pull out. I didn't even feel it coming out at all. He said everything was looking good. When the nurse weighted me she hit the reset button 3 times on the scale. Guess she couldn't beleve that since the last time I was weighted in the office I lost 36 pounds. Since I have been home I have lost 26 pounds. I can't tell that I have lost that much but my wife says she can tell I have lost. I don't have to go back for my next appointment for a month.  Also it was great to see everyone last night at the COF meeting. Another great meeting I learned a lot again.   Alan

11-20-06
on November 20, 2006 3:53 pm

Woke up early today as Brenda got ready for work and had a chocolate mint protein shake. As I got to the last few ounces I felt like I was going to dump. It made me feel very sick, I think I drank it too fast. After Brenda went to work I went back to sleep until almost noon. I got up and had some pudding and later a cup of soup broth along with water and that all went down ok. The rest of the day I took it easy I still am having some pain in my lower belly. I did manage to do some walking in the house.

on November 19, 2006 2:27 pm

After a good gulp of pain med's before I went to sleep, I slept the night well. I got up for awhile as Brenda got ready for work.Hope she still has her job for her missing so much to be by my side in the hospital. I love her so much I know that without her support I could of never made it through the whole thing. I plan to make it all up to her when I get down to where I want to be. After Brenda went to work I went back to sleep. Later on I got up again and empted my drain and changed the dressing, and got on the computer for awhile. I stayed up for awhile and then went back to bed and watched TV, and then went to sleep.

11-16-06 Day 3 in the hospital and going home
on November 19, 2006 1:44 pm

Day 3 in the hospital and we had a good nights sleep I got a new room mate but he was an older gentleman and he was very respectful and didn't make hardly an sound. Anita was my nurse again today and she kept us in stitches all day. She was just a great nurse. Seem now all I have to do is wait around for Dr. Hodges to stop in to release me to go home. They unhooked me from all my tubes ect so I could do some walking with my new walker I finally got. The nurses stopped in every so often for some med's. Other than that we just waited for the word to go home. About 6:30 thay said I could go home. So my wife packed up all my junk and we headed out I had to stop by the pharmacy to pick up my med's and Brenda had to lug my walker and junk to the car. The trip home was a bit rough and bumpy but I was so glad to be home. First thing I did was get on the computer to look at all the posts for the time I was gone, and then went to bed.

11-15-06 Second day in the hospital
on November 19, 2006 11:47 am

Well as day 2 in the hospital dawns my wife and I got a little sleep from the room mate from hell from the night before. The nurse's aid that came in to take care of me I truly beleve was sent from heaven. Her name was Anita, she lit up the whole room when she walked in. You could tell she cared about her job and the people she treated, and was not just there for a paycheck. She made sure that not just I, but my wife was as comfortable as possible. As far as the rest of the staff they were all great also. The rest of the day went as well as can be expected.

11-14-06 Day of my rebirth
on November 18, 2006 4:58 pm

Well it's almost 3am my wife and I are too excited to sleep. I have to report to admit at 5.30
I check in and they take me to a room where I get undressed and then the nurses bring in a bunch of paper work for me to sign. It's not long before they come and take me to the pre op room. I was the second person in there but not for long. Soon they start brining people in like crazy, it looks like they are going to have an assemble line going. The nurses and the anesthesiologists come in and talk to me. They try to start an IV but have a little trouble getting one started. Finally after a few tries they get it started. Now I have to wait for Dr. Hodges to stop in  and get the show on the road. By now I am about the only one left in there. First Dr. Edwards stops by he will be assisting Dr. Hodges.We talk a bit and then Dr. Hodges stops in and says everything is ready to go. they take me to the OR and move me onto the operating table. After that I don't remember much more because boom boom out goes my lights.
3 1/2 hours I am done I wake up in recovery I was a bit groggy but not feeling much pain. My wife tells me Dr. Hodges told her it was rough going but it went better than he expected. So they took me to my room and got me comfortable. Then just as I was getting ready to go to sleep they brought in the room mate from HELL. I don't know if this guy and his wife think they just checked into a Holiday Inn or something but they went crazy. Slamming doors contently flushing the toilet running water brushing there teeth, and kept turning down the heat. We would ask the nurses to turn it up and as soon as they would walk out the room they would turn it back down to 50.  This went on and on all night, there was no way My wife of I could sleep. Finally enough was enough my wife went off and told the nurses what was happening, so they called the nursing supervisor and they took them out of the room at about 4am.

Today with my brain on overload I call the nurse in charge of the bariatric surgery program. I told her everything that happened the last two days, she was very understanding and also very mad about what happened. She was going to talk to my Dr. about everything that happened and she and the Dr. would call me and talk things over. The rest of the day went ok.

DAY 9
on November 8, 2006 1:58 pm

Well as this day unfolds after the nightmare from yesterday I am greeted in my hospital room a big bursting tray of food that I can't even have a bit of because of my all liquid diet. But not to spare I have a nice little 1/2 pint of milk to drink. Now I get to spend the next several hours waiting and waiting for them to get me for my x-ray to find the mystery location of my new best friend I will have forever my filter called a birds nest, guess this means if I am outside too long standing in one place birds will start landing on me. A little before noon they finally take me to x-ray, which is also didn't go well they had to take the x-ray 3 times until they get it right. They send me back to my room and low and behold there is a tray with some tomato soup, pudding, orange sherbet, and milk. I never thought I would be so grateful for such a small amount of food. So about an hour later they tell me I can go home.

Day 7
on November 8, 2006 1:28 pm

Well today is a day I soon won't forget. I reported to St John's at 9:30 to admitting to get the ball rolling on my placement of the green filter that was to be installed in me to prevent blood clots in my lungs. It was to be a simple operation and I would be in and out of the hospital in just one day. HA  As it turned out when it came time for the operation the Dr. and the or staff had no idea what they going to do with me because of my size. It is not very encouraging when you have 10 people standing around you scratching there heads wondering what to do. So finally they roll me into the operating room and get started and because of my sleep apnea they don't put me under they just give me med's for pain, that didn't really kill all the pain. Some times it hurt real bad. So for the next 4 hours I lay on the bed listening to everything they are saying about me and it was not good. As it turns out they put in a filter that can never be removed, and I had no say in the matter, even though I was awake and they could of asked me.To place this filter they had gone (GUESS) where they were placing it. After that they wheel me back to the recovery room. Now it has been since 10:00 Sunday night since I have had anything to eat or drink and all they give me I a cup of water. I tell them that I am on a all liquid diet and could I at least have some milk. I guess that was asking to much because they said they could not get me any. After a few more hours pass they transfer me to a bigger and more comfortable bed, which I did appreciate, and take me to my new room to spend the night because since they had to guess where they placed the filter they need to take an x-ray the next day to see if it was in the right place. Was it in my head, foot ear nose who knew. So the rest of the night was spent trying to get some sleep between getting woke up every few hours for vitals or blood draws.

Well day 5 is here, hope its better than yesterday. Last night was rough, I was soooo hungry I was going crazy I tried drinking beef broth but that didn't help much. I thought by now it would be getting easer. It is beginning to stress me out. Stress sure don't help me any because before when I got stressed I ate, and ate to relieve my stress so that just makes it all the worse. I know that I am putting stress on my wife, and I hate it she is so good and supportive to me and I hate myself for that.  The thought crossed my mind last night just to forget it all and not have the surgery. Because it just isn't worth making others suffer for my stress. So I decided to just cry my self to sleep early and start fresh to day and so far to day things are going better.
