Hi, my name is Amanda.  I don't have a surgery date yet, I haven't even met with anyone about it yet.  I am hoping that soon I will be able to.  I also hope that this on-line journal will help others.  Thank you for looking and feel free to send me a message.

DS
on March 27, 2008 2:42 pm
So I have started looking into wls again.  I have not had much success at losing weight at all.  I have decided to get DS instead of RNY.  I have looked at both of them very extensively and I like the sound of DS (for me) better.  I found out today that my insurance will cover 100% of it except up to $500 for a 5 day hospital stay and $3000 for the program fee.  I don't have $3000!  $500 I can handle, we can come up with that much but $3000.  I just applied for care credit so we'll see if that comes through.  I was so excited when I heard that my insurance would cover the surgery 100% then I heard about the $3000 and my excitement turned into dread.  Well that's my newest update.  Take care everyone.

I've made a big decision
on September 28, 2007 12:43 am
I've decided that I am not going to have the surgery.  I am going to try Weight Watchers again.  I think that I can do it this time because I am more resolved to do it.  I will be going to Weight Watchers and joining a gym with my hubby.  Plus I am going to start walking at least every other day with my boys.
I just have a hard time with the thought of not being able to eat what I want to.  I like to eat chocolate once in a while and I love carbonated drinks.  I wish everyone the best in reaching thier goals.  I'll keep you all updated.

I've changed my mind
on September 28, 2007 12:43 am
So at the moment I think that I have changed my mind about WLS.  I think that I am going to go to weight watchers and see if I can actually lose the weight and keep it off.  I will give myself 6 months to a year and if I can't do it then I will look back into WLS.  This decision has not come easy.  The thought of getting WLS and losing 25-50 lbs in a month sounds wonderful.  But honestly I don't know if I am ready to give up food to the degree that I would have to if I had RNY.  I'll keep everyone posted on my progress. But you know the saying, 'When in doubt...'.  And at the moment I am very much in doubt.
I wish everyone the best and I thank all of you for your support.

I have my first appointment with the surgeon
on September 20, 2007 12:00 am

So I get a call 2 days ago from the surgeons office to come in for my first appointment on the 17th of October.  I asked if I could do anything prior to going in, like seeing a psychiatrist and a nutrionist.  So right away I went to work looking for a psychiatrist that my insurance covers.  I saw him last night and it seemed to go well.  He told me that when I've lost the weight to come back in so that he can see how I've changed.  I go in on the 10th for my EKG and my pre-surgical appointment.  I am just waiting for the nutrionist to call and set up an appointment.  I really hope that I am not jumping the gun here, I just want to make sure that I have everything taken care of and if she tells me that she can do the surgery on the 18th (yeah right, I know) that I can do it because everything is already taken care of.  I am finally feeling nervous about this.  Any word of encouragement are very much welcome.

My Story

So here is my story.  My name is Amanda.  I am 26 years old.  I have been married to a great man for just over 6 years.  We have 2 wonderful little boys.  Ian is almost 5 and Zach is about 17 months.   I have been over weight for as long as I can remember but now it is out of control, I weigh 298 pounds and I am 5'4" tall.  My mom tells me that when I was in the 2nd or 3rd grade I started getting chubby.  And I can't really understand it because I was a very active child.  I was always outside playing with my cousins, riding my bike and playing in the swimming pool.

I have to do something about my weight because I want to be here to see my boys grow into men.

I have wanted to do something this drastic for a while now, but my husband thought that I could lose weight without surgery.  Well, I tried but I couldn't do it.  When I exercise, my back hurts, my hips hurt, my knees hurt and my foot hurts due to the extra weight that I am carrying around.   I am tired all of the time, which doesn't work out well with 2 little guys who want to play.  So about a month ago my husband looks me in the eyes and tells me that if I still want to get weight loss surgery, he will be there for me 100%.  So I have been researching like crazy and talking to everyone that I can about it.  I talked to my doctor and she agreed that it would be good for me and that I would be a good candidate for it.  I was looking up my BMI and it showed that I am Super Morbidly Obese, WOW, that really hit me hard.   I am bigger now then when I was pregnant with my youngest.  Well, hopefully soon I will be writing that I got my surgery date.  I wish all of you the best and good luck reaching your goals.
