Week 5 and able to eat bread, rice & other starches-3 yrs later

Jul 24, 2014

Almost 3 years ago, I posted a blog that got so much attention, it boggled my mind. I was 5 weeks post-op from a sleeve and tried eating a hamburger and was shocked at how much I could get down. I also tried some sushi and the same thing. I came on this site to see if anyone else was able to eat what I could eat and all "H" broke loose!

My post was not to get the "Carb Police" after me or to offend anyone. Yet the replies I got, for the most part, were harsh and offensive at times. I got people telling me I was refusing to listen to all the good advice I was getting from everyone and the whole thing was that...I didn't want people's opinions. I simply wanted to hear if others had the same experience as I was having, that's all. (You can check out the post if interested at "Week 5 and able to eat bread, rice and other starches".)

If anyone that posted back then is still around, I'd just like to say that I had a barium swallow test done a few months back and as it turns out, my sleeve is larger than the average one out there. That is why I was able to eat like I did back then and even now. I wasn't stuffing my sleeve fuller than anyone else's...it's just that mine could take more than it should have.

I am interested to know, though, if anyone who posted before could tell me about their experiences with their sleeves now. I really don't mind if you were hard on me back then. I really don't. I'm just curious to see how many of us, with our best dietary intentions back then, managed to stay on track. Those that gave me heck for eating carbs...are you still staying strong on protein and veggies? Those that emphasized portion control, how is that going? Those that told me that a sleeve is not for binge eating and that I needed a shrink, how's your weight these days?

I've noticed a few that posted back then have gone the DS route and found that interesting. A friend that had the sleeve 4 years back has regained a lot and is thinking about a resleeving or revision to something else.

I've had my ups and downs with my sleeve, with side effects and some weight gain. But overall, while I might have done some things differently with the whole sleeve thing, I'm not unhappy at all I had WLS.

BTW, I'm not a "troll" as some called me back then. I notice that most people stop posting after a short time post-op. While I haven't been on here for a few years, I hope to "pop back in" every so often to share my experiences and hear from others. It's also helpful for others to hear from those who have had WLS in both the short-term AND long-term past.

We'll see what this brings.
