I've been banded. :)
on November 29, 2008 6:12 pm
Well, I was banded as scheduled on Nov 19, 2008. Dr. Warnock also removed my gall bladder, due to gall stones, and repaired a hiatal hernia. Fun times.

I spend the night of the 19th in the hospital and was discharged on the 20th. Dave and I stayed that night in the Rathgeber Hospitality House. Wonderful place. I had an appt on the 21st with Dr. Warnock, where he just looked me over and said I was good to make the 3 hour drive home. :)

Recovery went well. Until Wed the 26th. Man oh man. The gas pain was horrible and I really was second guessing my choice. Thursday I was much better and it's all been gravy from there. I am finally feeling like my "normal" self. I'm still a bit tender, but that's ok.  I do seem to have developed a wicked stitch in my right side today, but I'm hoping a little heating pad therapy will take care of that. :)

Surgery Date Set...it's getting closer.
on November 10, 2008 10:59 am

I have a surgery date of Nov 19th.  I have to be in Wichita falls for my pre-admission stuff at 8:00 am. That means we leave here around 5:30am. After my pre-admission stuff, I have a lapband class at Dr.Warnock's office.  Then the hubby and I check into the guest house.

I have to be at the hospital at 5am on the 19th for surgery. I'll spend the night at the hospital, hubby will go back to the guest house. I should be released from the hospital on the 20th, and spend one more night in the guest house. The dr should give me the go ahead to go home on the 21st. :)

I am super excited. I have to get a gall bladder scan at some point this week. Not sure how that is going to go over, but we'll find out tomorrow at the base.  :)

It's on like Donkey Kong. :)
on October 30, 2008 1:04 pm
So, my consult was Tuesday. It was a LONG day. We live about 2 1/2 hrs from the dr I wanted to see. We left here about 12 and got home around 9:45. LONG DAY!!! :)

However, Dr. Warnock was great. Everything about the office, his interaction with me, and his staff just re-enforced my decision to choose him.  I met with him, he explained the Lapband procedure and risks. He asked if I wanted him to tell me about bypass and I said no thank you. :)

He said I need to lose down to 280 before we can do the surgery. He wants me to exercise 45 min every day and follow a pre-op diet.  So, from here until surgery I'm doing 2 protein shakes a day and one salad with 4 oz of lean protein. I can only use the spray dressing, which is fine. I am supposed to drink only water, crystal light and decaf coffee or tea. Today was day 1 and so far so good.

They put the referral in for the surgery on Tuesday and they said to expect approval in  a couple weeks. They also said that I could be in for surgery  the end of November/begining of December.

I am super stoked.

PCM Appt
on September 9, 2008 7:04 pm
So, today was my appt with my PCM to get a referral to a bariatric surgeon.  When I told him I was there to get a referral for the lapband surgery he said "I'm a big fan of weight loss surgery:. WHOO HOO!!!

He had no problem putting the referral in. He even asked me if I had a specific dr in mind, which I did. There is a dr or two in town that do bariatric surgery however, I would rather go to another dr farther away, based solely on lapband experience. So, he's going to put in for that dr.

I should be receiving a letter in the mail soon with my referral approval fairly soon. :)

I am so excited!!!!

My Story

So, this is where I spill my guts, huh?  Ok, you asked for it.

Well, right now I am a 34yr old SAHM to 3 boys. My boys ae 17,9, and 7. I have been married to my high school sweetheart for almost 17yrs.  My hubby is in the US Air Force and we are currently living in Texas, but Missouri is home.

I am a fat girl
(and yes, I am gonna use the word "fat". I know that some people avoid it, but I think it's an accurate description.) Now, I have not been fat my whole life. I was an average size kid. In high school I felt HUGE, but I wasn't. I was bigger than most of my friends, but I weighed around 175, which is not that bad really.

I put on quite a bit of weight with my first pregnancy, which I lost shortly after delivery, and then promptly gained right back. :)  I've been going up since then.  I have tried tons of diets including Atkins, South Beach, Weight Watchers,  extremely low-cal, etc. I even tried to talk myself into becoming bulimic, but I just can not make myself throw up.   I have joined a couple local "Biggest Loser" type programs as well. Those included exercise classes, cooking classes, and meeting with a nutritionist.  I have lost weight on all of those programs, but not much and it didn't stay away long.  Right now I weigh in at about 285, and I have not weighed less than 220 in 16-ish yrs.

I have been researching the lap-band surgery for a while. I have never felt bad enough to want to risk any of the by-pass surgeries, but lap-band seemed to be a great option. I have been trying to figure out how I was going to pay for such a surgery because our health insurance did not cover lap-band, even though it covered the by-pass surgery.

I recently learned that Tricare
(the military health insurance) has approved the lap-band surgery. WHOO HOO!!! You do not even know how super stoked I was to hear that.  I looked up the qualifiers and thought I might have a hard time getting it approved because I don't really have any serious health issues, yet. I do have borderline high blood pressure and high cholesterol, but I don't take any meds for it and my dr's aren't that concerned. But, then I found out that ifyou are 200% over the recommended weight for your height and body size, you qualify based on weight alone.  Well, sadly, I fit the 200% over.

Now, I finally feel like I can overcome this weight hurdle.  I will be scheduling an appt with my dr as soon as we get back from vacation. I am hoping to be able to get things sorted and have a surgery date in  a matter of months. We'll see how it goes.  I will definatley be updating this as soon as I have more news. :)
