Just called MUSC to check on Katrina and spoke to someone who was in the room with her. He said she came through her surgery fine with no problems or complications and was asleep when I called. Her surgery was at 7:30 this morning, so it has been a long day for her! I'll try to chat with her a bit later if she is awake and post again if anything changes! Lea

This morning I went to a follow-up with my Dr. My Vitamin D level is so low, the numbers didnt even register!!!!!!!!!!!!! My protein  and iron levels are also still very low- I am at my wits end; I have always had low iron but the low protein and vitamin d bothers me a great deal!

8 months update...
on March 9, 2008 8:49 am
Well its been 8 long months since my lap rny...for the most part I feel and look great! I can wear 1x tops- I dont ever remember wearing a 1x! I can wear 2x skirts but choose not to because of my legs...my surgeon told me that having surgery on my legs is more dangerous than having gastric bypass! my primary care doctor told me that having surgery on my back to repair damage done during my rny is extremely dangerous and there's no guarantee that the nerves arent permanently damaged! (both of those facts are hard to swallow; I've decided to not have surgery on my legs nor my back; neither are worth the risk!) As usual my protein is low, my iron is low and my vitamin d is low. My weighloss stalls a lot now, but I will not complain- I have lost a tremendous amount of weight already and I am so thankful for that!

My Story

I have not been overweight all of my life. My weight gain started in the summer of 1990. From then til now, I have gained weight and lost weight, gained weight and lost weight. In 2003, I started to experience swelling in both of my legs. The doctors told me that I  had edema. I was told to take Lasix,  eliminate sodium from my diet and keep my feet elevated. Fast forward to 2007. I do not have edema. For three years I took Lasix (Lasix should never be used to treat lymphedema!) I have severe, debilitating lymphedema in both legs. My mobility is limited. I am disabled. I am only thirty one years old! I have 100 plus pounds of built up fluid in my system. I deal with nerve pain in my legs every day. I must have physical therapy twice a day, three times a week.  Because of the way my legs and feet are swollen, I try to avoid people and social situations as much as possible. I know that I will still have lymphedema after my WLS; however, I am optimistic that I will be able to manage it better. I was diagnosed with sleep apnea in September 2006- this is what made me a candidate for surgery. My sleep study revealed that I stopped breathing 40 times in an hour in my sleep! (pretty scary to say the least!) My doctor informed that because my sleep apnea went undiagnosed for many years, this contributed to my weight gain as well. I have been told that 85% of people with sleep apnea have no more symptomologies after WLS (i.e. no more snoring, no CPAP, etc.) However, because my sleep apnea is so severe, I will still have to use my CPAP; however, the settings could be adjusted. I am so happy that I made the decision to have WLS. No matter what, I know that my health will improve as will my overall quality of life. Four years ago, I would never have never even considered WLS. Now, I'm thankful for the opportunity to have it. Eventhough I cry and complain about my legs hurting and my weight, I know that my situation could be a lot worse. I take the good and the bad and thank God for it all. I AM LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS JOURNEY.........
