Thursday is your day! Just remember you are on the journey of a lifetime. Try to enjoy every minute. It may sound weird now, but know that you are cared for and prayed for here, and all too soon this will be but a memory and you will be an inspiration to someone else. I am waiting for you on the losers' bench!

1 year later

Wow...its been a year since I last posted.  I have lost 190 pounds since surgery.  The last year has been total hell.  I got really sick last december and was hospitalized from January 9th until September 20th of this year. I was diagnosed with polyneuropathy.  I lost the ability to walk .  My entire body was in pain.  I went a week with blindness and hearing loss.  The neuropathy caused numbness and tingling from my neck down.

Now I am getting better.  I am able to walk with a walker but I still have the numb/tingling feeling in my arms and legs.  Its the constant feeling of like when your foot falls asleep but it never goes away.  The dr's dont know if I will get full sensation back.

POST OP

10/5/07

I am 2 weeks and 4 days post op and 38 pounds down.

I had some complications after my surgery.  The surgery its self was great but I was in ICU for a few days.  I was not able to breathe on my own and close to respitory failure.  I spent 8 days in the hospital beeing slowly taken off oxygen.

Besides that, I am having an issue with my incision.  About a week and a half out, my incision started leaking...which is normal.  I went to my 2 week visit and they opened up the bottom to allow all of the goo to release.  I have to clean it 2 times a day which is VERY hard for me!  I can barely stand the sight of blood and having to clean this is just yukky.

I have had no problems tolerating foods.  I am sick of jello!!!  I was not crazy about scrambled eggs tho.

1 day from hospital pre-op and only 4 full days until surgery....again.

I am starting to feel really anxious and or nervous that I will be cancelled...again.  I am right where I was at when I hit the last bump in the road.  I hope all goes well and there is nothing wrong.  I had the flu and thats gone now so I dont know what else could happen to get in the way of my surgery date.

My Story

My Name is Laura and I am 26 years old.  I have been overweight my entire life.  10 years ago, I was over 200 pounds when I got pregnant with my son.  I was 255 when I delivered him and never lost any weight.  I was a stay at home mom so I basically sat around with the baby watching TV and not being active.  I stayed home for the first 3 years being a couch potato.  I wasnt happy in my marraige or situation and I think that played a major role in my depression and weight gain.  I am very secure with myself physically but I am not happy with the way my weight feels.  I go out dancing and enjoy social situations.  I dont feel all insecure at the gym or around other people.  My main concern is my health.  My close relitives suffer from high blood pressure, high chlorestrol, arthritis and so on.  Those are not medical terms I am looking forward to hearing.  As of now, I have none of those but I have other issues.  I get shortness of breath very easily, lower back pain after walking a short distance, bladder weakness, depression, and insomnia.  My main goal is to prevent these medical issues and have a long and healthy life with my son and family.  I would also like to be able to go to Magic Mountain and ride the rides with Ryan and Brittany...not just watch, run the bases at Ryan's practices and just be able to live an active lifestyle with the kids.  In August of 2004 I decided to look into WLS (weight loss surgery).  I had divorced the looser and was ready to move on.  I had Kaiser at the time so I went to my PCP and discusses it with him.  He was very supportive and set me up with the referral to the 5 week class that was required first.  Kaiser has a very long program you must follow in order to qualify for the surgery.  When I started, I was told 18 months to 2 years from start to finish.  To make a long story short, I completed everything and was approved for surgery in 11/05!  All I had to do was get started on loosing my 10% body weight.  Horray???  Not so much.  My employer who covers my insurance decided to leave Kaiser and switch to Pacificare in Jan 06 meaning all of my hard work and everything I did was for absoultly NOTHING!  I was so upset.  I basically gave up.  I got a little depressed then gained about 15 pounds.  So in August I decided to try with Pacificare and see what they offer.  It was so much less BS than Kaiser!  They have a program called "Healthy Roads" that is a 6 months over the phone coaching program.  Kind of silly talking to a RD and a personal trainer on the phone for 30 minutes once a week but hey....it beat Kaiser!  I was first told that I would have a 3 month program bacause I have already completed Kaiser's 18 month program.  Well someone was wrong, I had to wait out the 6 months and that brings me to date.  My 6 months was on March 21 07.  I will continue the rest of my journey in the blog section as things progress!  Sorry for spelling oop's!  Its late and no spell check!
