Welcome To My Journey

TRAVELING THROUGH WEIGHT LOSS
Bon's Journey

Finally There
on June 10, 2007 8:51 pm
There have been a few potholes along the way that delayed my journey.  During that time I lost 26 lb before surgery on May 31st.  I had lap rny on the Thursday and was discharged from hospital on the Saturday.  After staying in an apartment on the hospital site for the weekend we drove home on the Monday.
So, I've been home almost a week and things are going well.  Protein drinks, broth, jello and Crystal Lite are my menu favourites.  It hasn't been difficult getting in the reqired liquid and protein since I've been home.  I'm still experiencing some back pain from time to time, gas I suppose but the stomache is fine and the 7 incisions are healing well.  This week I return for my 2 week check up.

Update

December 20th I was at the Henry Ford Center in Detroit for their orientation seminar and to meet the surgeon.  My decision to take this journey was confirmed and I was told to lose 10 lbs before surgery.  They were to send a request to OHIP to get approval for the surgery.

Then I waited and waited and waited.  It was over six weeks until I was advised I have been approved.  During the waiting time I feel I have lost my enthusiasm somewhat.  I am still committed to having the surgery but there is a lack of urgency and reality for getting on with the pre-op things I need to do.  My next appointments are mid and late March.  So, maybe that will mean an April surgery date.  I'll just have to wait some more on to find out.

I am trying to turn my mindset around.  Reading the books again, getting the Magic Bullet up and running, testing the protein shakes, trying to shake some weight and get movin' more.  But...it's late February and I am weary of winter and snow and cold.....

My Story

image

Greetings from Guelph, Ontario

BMI  43    5 ft 4 in tall

Hoping to have surgery at Henry Ford Health Centre early 2007.

Approved by medical insurer for initial consult Dec.  2006

I was 7 years old when I discovered to my surprise that I was "fat". It had not occurred to me before and it wasn't a particularly  negative realization. One of my classmates asked why I brought salads for lunch when everyone else had sandwiches. I didn't know. I just brought what Mom gave me. The teacher jumped into explain and from what she said, which I don't recall, I concluded fat people have to eat salads. Therefore I am fat. Pictures from my childhood do not confirm this. But from then on I felt fat. At 18 I weighed 150 lb but I felt fat and unacceptable and so it went. That which I feared I brought upon myself. With every decade I gained and lost and gained some more.

So I have spent thousands of dollars and lost hundreds of pounds and have dieted and exercised myself into morbid obesity and Type 2 diabetes. By chance or destiny I found on the American Diabetes website mention that weight loss surgery can halt the symptoms and eliminate the need for medication for many diabetics. So, here I am looking for a way to solve my weight issue once and for all.
