Surgeon Testimonial

Eric S. Schlesinger, M.D., F.A.C.S
Dr. Schlesinger is a great surgeon and a great man. He is a total professional, does not try to gloss over anything, covers everything there is to be covered in the initial meetings, reiterates in later meetings, is very open and responsive to questions. I think he's the greatest thing since sliced bread. His surgical competence is the most important thing to me, although he is polite and professional in his bedside manner, as well. He's not babying in any way, but I don't need another parent.

The staff at BTC is also wonderful. They know this is a life changing step and they want to make sure you have all of the tools to succeed. They also realize the importance of repetition, which I think is great. Many times when you meet with them, you are excited, nervous, and post op medicated, so they make sure you understand everything they are educating you with.

Also, the post op nurses are wonderful. They don't just shove meds at you or stick it in your port. They tell you what they are giving you, what it is for, etc.

Every person at this facility is great. The respiratory people, pre op nurses, post op nurses, administrators, after care support team, Nutritionist, receptionist, EVERYONE.

It's like a cult of caring professionals, and they make me want to join!

The only thing negative I can say is "surgery hurts". But that's temporary!

Hi Donna, I'd say don't be nervous but, heck, I was nervous! Of course it was all for nothing (except I burned a few extra calories) because my surgery went just fine. In fact, the week before surgery was harder than the week after. I'd say I had more soreness than pain; all completely manageable. Keep it positive. That includes having only positive people around you. The negative ones will just test your nerves. Don't forget to post your experiences to surgery pages when you feel better. I hope all your health and weight-loss dreams come true,

Surgery date 4-26-04
Ringing in at 283 lbs.

As of today (5/8) I am 12 days post op, ringing in at 265, down 18 lbs.

I had pretty much resigned myself to being overweight, but as my health became more complicated, decided I could no longer accept it.

It is my hope to be able to eliminate 3 of my 5 current medications, and the need for them! I had to stop the Vioxx two weeks before surgery, and up until then, I didn't know how many things on my body really hurt! At this time, I am no longer taking my medications for the DMII. My sugars are great, but I am still on full liquids, so we will know in a few weeks if that one is history. Wish me luck!

6/4 - Approaching the 6 week mark, ringing in at 247, with a loss of 36 lbs. I hit a plateau for over a week, had to try to eat a little more. Protein intake is good and I feel pretty good. Sugars are still good, so no diabetes meds! Yay!

6/27 - 236
I have been sleepy a lot lately. I was sleeping 12 hours straight with no problem. I got some sublingual B12 and that really seems to have made a difference relatively quickly. So, I'm feeling better now, just less tolerant of things in my life that are not the way I want them to be. I will be losing my job in the fall because I declined the relocation to Tucson. I feel like it will be the same BS in a different town, so it's time to move on after 14 years. Nothing but positive changes for me!

7/29 - 222
Down 61 lbs. Had my 3 month blood work and my iron was way low, but I have struggled with that most of my life. Taking lots of iron now and starting to feel better.

8/21 - 215
Down 68 lbs. I am pretty excited. I am only 5 lbs away from being only "obese". I seem to be hitting a lot of mini plateaus. I will maintain for a week, then lose 3 or 4 lbs in a week. But changes seem to be much more dramatic now judging by people's reactions. I am doing pretty good with my vitamins and continuing to feel better. Fasting sugars are down to 93. It's heaven!

10/15 - 199
Down 84 lbs. Still feeling good, sugars still normal...

12/27/04 - OK, my 1st goal was to be down 100 lbs by Christmas. I had given up because for an entire month I was stuck at 98 lbs lost. I started working out the week before Thanksgiving and had not lost a lb. since! Finally, on Christmas Day, I stepped on the scale and was down 102 lbs. and now weigh 181. One more lb and I am no longer obese! Yay! Unfortunately, I feel like the plateau was broken by this flu bug I have, but I am happy to reach my first goal, and looking forward to my next goal, which is 145 goal - final goal!

9/17/05 - I guess it's time to update. My current weight is 167 lbs. That is a loss of 115 lbs. I have been stable for 4-5 months. I feel good. I struggle somewhat with hypoglycemia and low blood pressure, but I really have no complaints! My blood work is PERFECT finally. There is not ONE thing out of range!

4/27/07 - Well, this week was my 3rd anniversary. My weight fluctuates by a couple of pounds but hangs right around 155 now. 167 was the norm pretty much from my 1 year anniversary until the last couple of months when it dropped a few more. I think it's the stress diet. I still struggle with anemia, but the diabetes is still perfectly controlled. I definitely think it was the best decision for me to have the surgery and I have no regrets!

11/27/11 - 135 .lbs
It's been a while since I checked in.
Still hanging in there. Hard to believe it's been 7 1/2 years....

1/22/12 - 131 .lbs.
All of my vitamin levels are doing allright except vitamin D  - horrible of 4.9 (s/b 30-100). I am not surprised because calcium/vit D have to suffer because calcium interferes with iron and I focus on that one a lot.  Have to change plans a little....
