Happy 4th!
on July 4, 2011 7:33 am
Sugery was March 29th and 72.8 lbs are gone as of today...according to my OH health tracker my BMI has gone down 12.6% so far. I must say I am so thankful for and happy with my DS. I've been overweight since childhood and I am very much looking forward to someday in the next few months discovering what my true adult self will look like. I'm not striving for perfection, healthly and active is my goal; but I've no clue what's "underneath." (never unwrapped a present this slowly before) hee hee I pray the next 3 months go as smoothly as the 1st 3...if so, I'll be "hell on wheels" before I know it!

Um, better late than never?
on June 27, 2011 6:20 am
So, I guess I get caught up in reading the forums and being on FB and have totally forgotten about updating this at all. (My bad.) soooo...none of my surgery drama or recovery pain was documented, but believe me it's still in my head (and I still have two mostly healed but crusty, itchy, rashy incision sites that I have to medicate . ANYWAY...this Wednesday the 29th is my 3 month milestone. I am down from like 364 to 298 as of yesterday. I know that's not as fast as some people, but I am happy so far. Considering my heel spur keeps me from doing the amount of walking I'd like to be doing, and I am not able to get to a pool (mentally and time/money wise) I don't think I'm doing too bad. Trying to do my best with all the vit and sups. I am going to start setting an alarm on my phone or something! Anyway, I can't promise frequent updates..but know that I am reading the DS forum and appreciating all the posts from folks. I've learned so much from the vets, I can't imagine anyone having this surgery and not knowing about OH!

Happy, nervous, excited...me and my "in the near...
on January 15, 2011 5:56 pm

Thursday, my surgeon's nurse told me I am "looking at mid-February" for my surgery. I am so happy, scared, and hopeful that I'm finding it hard to NOT think about what is coming up for me. In addition, the more I read the forums the more sure I am that I've chosen the "right" surgery for me...DS. Although I know many have had great success with RNY; I am confident the DS is going to be the most useful and long-term tool I could hope to have in my weight loss struggle. I know there are pros and cons to the DS, just as there are with all WLS options; but I think the health benefits from losing weight FAR outweigh the problems I might expect to experience. I think I can endure episodes of the "green-apple-two-step" in order to lower my BP, reduce back pain, and ease joint pain. I'll gladly "light a match" in the bathroom if it means I'll soon be able to enjoy roller-coasters again with my children. I have no problem taking a barrage of vitamins if it means I won't look like a circus bear on a tricycle when I go shopping for my next motorcycle. I know it is going to be hard work, I know it's not an instant fix...but I have faith that my DS surgery will be just about the best thing "since sliced bread." All that being said...I'm nervous. Anyone who has gone through DS, whether new or vet: Was there something you wish you'd known prior to DS surgery that you didn't find out until later? How about positive surprises? What (initially) was the hardest thing for you? I look forward to hearing from "you"!
