Surgeon Testimonial

Marek Lutrzykowski, M.D.
From the beginning, I was impressed with Dr. L's knowledge and concern. I will be having a procedure that is different from most called a sleeve gastrectomy. It is actually the first part of the DS. Dr. L is the first surgeon who actually said he could help me, being a Crohn's patient. I was told that as a Crohn's patient there are a few different risks involved, but Dr L explained them all in detail and I have great confidence in him.rnHe stresses that you must follow the after care and attend support meetings and I intend to follow these.

(January 2008) I am 53 years old and married for 34 years to a wonderful man who loves me unconditionally.  We have two beautiful daughters, Julie and Becky, and a son-in-law, Randy.  Like most everyone else on this site, I have struggled with my weight most of my life and am now looking forward to finally getting control and becoming "normal".

What a year!
on January 1, 2009 3:10 pm
Well, it has been 9 months since my surgery.  I am still having issues with my eating.  Want to eat  things that I know are not good for me.  Unfortunately the bad things seem to go down way too easily.  But, that being said, I am now down 115 pounds!!!  I have lost more than my elderly aunt weighs and I have CURVES.  I am down from a size 30-32 to an 18-20.
I wonder how much I would have been down had I made only good choices.  But, I am happy where I am and determined to make this work.  I still have a way to go, my doctor says at least 80 more pounds.
Tuesday was my birthday and I turned 54.  Amazingly, this was the first birthday in 25 years that I weighed less than 300 pounds.  I am so thankful to have had this chance at a new life.  God has granted me an opportunity that I believed would never happen to me because of my Crohn's disease.  I look forward to 2009 as one of the best years of my life!

long time between updates
on November 17, 2008 4:57 pm
It has been a long time since I have updated my profile.  This has been an incredible journey and I am still on the road.  As of today, I have lost 105 pounds and now weigh less than I did when I gave birth to my first daughter in 1975!  Because I spent all of my adult life as a person over 300 pounds, I am having a hard time wrapping my head around a smaller me.
But I have had a few NSV's.  First one was when my brother-in-law and his wife came to visit this September.  They wanted to go to Detroit and see the new water front, eat at Greek Town and ride the people mover.  I was ok until I noticed that we had to walk through turnstyles to get on the people mover.  I stood there shivering, afraid that I again would not fit.  But my DH pushed me through saying that I would be fine.  And guess what?!  I FIT!  Then when we were visiting my brother in PA, we had to ride a bus to go to an apple festival.  Again the thoughts ran through my head that I would not fit on the bus and would have to walk side-ways.  But I could not believe it when I was actually able to walk down the isle of the bus like a normal person and my husband could sit on the seat with me!  But the best has been watching my clothes go from a 30-32 to a 18-20!  I am almost out of the "women's" department!
The weight loss has begun to slow down and I am having to work harder on choosing the right foods to eat, but for the first time in my life, I believe I can do this.  Thank you to everyone who posts and encourages.  You are a wonderful community and I could not have done this without you!

FIRST DAY BACK AT EXERCISE
on April 23, 2008 6:37 am
Today I went back to the cardiac rehab group where I exercise.  Wasn't able to do too much, but did manage to stay on the treadmill 15 minutes.  My speed was only 1.7 mph and it was only .33 miles, but it is a start.  I will take tomorrow off and then go back on Friday.  My goal on Friday is to step up the pace and go a little longer.  Then I spent about 6 minutes on the Newstep, but did not use the arm part.  My total steps were around 500.  It felt really good to get back into my routine.
It has been two weeks today and I am down 17 pounds.  I am finding that I am beginning to have problems with some foods.  It is very important to eat and drink SLOWLY.  This has proven a problem for me.  I tend to gulp the water and then have a pain in my chest until it goes down.  But, I am learning and willing to put forth the effort.  Still a little tired and taking naps everyday, but I know that will continue to improve.

My Story

Hi, I am finally getting around to posting something on this blog.
I started my weight battle at a very young age as most of you on this site have.  My first diet started when I was nine years old and has continued.  I have done them all!!  As an older teen and a young wife, I abused laxitives.  It kept my weight somewhat manageable, but I soon ballooned to over 300 pounds.  In 1983 I was diagnosed with Crohn's disease and a doctor actually told me "I would get on to you about your weight (295) but this disease will take care of that for you."  Well, I have had all the side effects, Kidney stones, fistulas, surgeries, constant diarrhea, etc., but the skinny side affect never materialized.  When my sister and best friend were able to have the RNY surgery, I felt devastated.  Not that I did not want them to be thinner and healthier, but the doctors all told me that WLS was not an option for me.  Then I found out about the VSG!!  It is the only option for Crohn's patients!!  So I am on my way.  Surgery is set for April 9th!! I thank God daily for this oportunity that I believed I would never get!
