My Story

I am 37 years old and have been obese all of my adult life and the majority of my childhood.  I was a fat baby, but an avergage sized little kid (as in under 10yrs old).  It was around 5th grade and the onset of adolesence that the weight began to creep in.  I was teased and harrassed, but I had a great group of ride or die friends (and I learned how to dish out some insults of my own).  I've been blessed to never have had low self esteem, but my confidence could use a good boost.  I have never been happy about being overweight and have constantly tried to change... I have tried every diet from Atkins, to WW, to a complete liquid diet...I can lose an average amount, but it always comes back, plus interest!!  Nothing has lasted.

I considered WLS a few years ago, but didn't really research it.  I listened to rumors and 2nd hand horror stories (you know,  "My uncle's barber's daughter's best friend's teacher's aunt died from that bypass stomach staple thingie!") which caused me to chicken out.  I figured, all surgery does is make you eat less, I can do that on my own.....APPARENTLY NOT!!!

It's been over two decades of yoyo dieting, meager successes and epic fails.  Summer 2011 was the worst so far, I had gained up to 522 & could not wear a single pair of the cute sandals I wore in 2010 (let's net even discuss clothes!!)  By fall, I couldn't fit into my boots either.  In Nov 2011, I started WW again and started working with a personal trainer.  My weight and the swelling in my legs was not moving so I went to my PCP.  He thought it might be my heart and sent me to a cardiologist.  After not being able to fit in the CT scan or MRI machines and the insensitive cardiologist told me, "If you don't lose weight, you will DIE.  There is nothing we can do for you because you will break the machines!".   I was livid (partly because he was right)!  Long story short, I saw a different cardiologist who found nothing wrong with my heart (yay!).  He and my PCP suggested I look into WLS before an issue does arise.

So, I went to an orientation on March 10, 2012.  It was an eye opening experience and I learned so much.  **Deep breath**  Here we gooooooooooo....
