Bruce Schirmer M.D.
Dr Schirmer was very kind and supportive, seems to be very knowledgable, has been doing surgery over 23 yrs..made me feel comfortable in his capable hands. Answers all questions in a quiet direct manner that is really understandable and is honest about risks associated with surgery.

Plugging along
on November 7, 2008 6:43 am
Well, it's November now, and I've lost a total of 78lbs. That's a lot of weight but not what I had hoped for. I quess I'll just keep plugging along loosing a pound here and there. I didn't lose a lb. for the last 2 mths and now I finally lost 4 lbs in the last 2 weeks. I'll take what ever I can get! Just getting below 190 was a feat in itself. I feel so much better. In a size 14 pants and xl shirt. So nice to shop in regular womans section again, I cannot believe the joy. To those newbies out there, if you are just beginning your journey, the joys come slowly but surely!

3months surgiversery
on June 18, 2008 7:48 pm
Well, I survived my surgery, although I wondered whether or not I was going to for the first 6 weeks. I had terrible pain in my left side which all but kept me in the bed, walking was nearly impossible. But after the 6th week it mysteriously dissapeared, and I slowly began to get back into the swing of things. AT 3 mths. out I am down 46lbs. whoo hoo!! I know others who had the surgery the same time as I did that have lost 60, but I quess with my troubles in the beginning, I got a slow start. I however, am very happy with my loss and as long as it continues I will be content to be the slow turtle that wins the race. I also have heard that it is better for your skin tone not to lose too much too fast  as well. I have somewhat of a problem getting in my protein, but I struggle to do what I have to do. I know how important it is and must find a way to make it a priority.

surgery date
on March 14, 2008 3:37 pm
Well, I've finally got my date, Monday March 17, only 3 days away! Wow! I have so many emotions right now. Fear, excitement , kind of sick to my stomach. I only know that if I had not been coming to this OH website for support, I couldn't have done this. I would have felt so alone. But at least I'm armed with loads of good info and know where to come for more if need be Thanks everyone for your support! Now for the 2 day bowel prep, Yukkers!

Well, I have finally submitted to insurance! It's so exciting. Putting your future in the hands of someone else is so frustrating. Who are they, they don't know you, what this means to you, how it will change your whole life. All with the click of a pen, yes or no. I should know something by the end of the week. This will probably be the longest week of my life. Pray with me my friends to keep me sane and sprinkle some approveal dust for the Gods.
Jan.24 I am approved! It took almost 2 weeks but finally it happened. I am so excited I can barely type. No date for now. Just thankful.

My Journey
on August 21, 2007 3:06 pm
My journey begins on Thurs. Aug.16. It's the day I've been waiting for. Four months waiting for my surgeons appt. and it's finally here. Well the doctor says that I'm a perfect candidate for wls.! Like I didn't know that. But the the insurance pro says that all I need is a psych evaluation and I'm through! I can't believe my insurance co. is making it so easy for me. Although I have four illnesses that will be helped by the surgery, I am overjoyed.  Well, it's now Oct. and wouldn't you know it there's a problem with the insurance and now I have to wait till Feb. and see a PCP every month for the insurance to approve me! Very dissappointed, was so looking forward to loosing weight by next summer. Seems like a long way off. Trying not to be depressed.

My Story

Hi, My name is Pam. I am a 47 year old woman who is morbidly obese,260lbs.. have been steadily gaining weight for the last ten years and this is my highest. I have 2 children,a 24 yr. old son and a  19 year old daughter, and 5wonderful grandchildren. They are the biggest reason I want this WLS. I am tired of living life on the sidelines and unable to participate in their lives.  I have diabeses, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and peripheral neuropathy from the diebetes and have trouble walking. But I am determined to have this surgery and my health back. I want to thank so many of the board members for their support and information, it keeps me going and knowing that I am not alone in my journey. Hopefully soon I will join them and be able to help someone else who sits alone like me, knowing with the touch of a button someone is there to help them.
