2 weeks post-op
on October 23, 2008 6:10 pm

2 weeks post-op, I had my surgery on Thursday Oct.9th. It was pretty bad the first few days, started to think that I made the wrong decision, was having a lot of pain and gas pressure, could not get fluids down, only a few ounces a day. Started to get dehydrated and to top it off I was getting very constipated, but I made it through …..lol… …didn’t think I would.

By the end of the first week things started getting better. I was no longer using the binder, was up and walking around the block and learning how to deal with my new stomach. My post-op appointment Tuesday Oct. 14th with Dr. Syn went well I lost 18 pounds in one week. WOW   I was in shock!

Came home on Sat. Oct.18th it was hard to sit in the car for so long but we finally got home. (Rio Rancho, NM) The first day or so I tried to stick with the diet and the idea that I only needed a ¼ cup of food 6 times a day, well I have to admit I found that part hard to understand. Anyway I started to try other foods, my craving started to get the best of me. So I started adding things like pork, chicken, ground steak, salsa, bean dip and cheese to my cottage cheese.

The shakes also became too sweet, so I added unflavored protein power to them so I could get them down. LOL you know us guys we can’t wait and have to be hard headed sometimes. I did so well with all of these things that I decided that I could eat anything…….until last night. Ooooops my first dumping OMG!!!!!!!!!!  I ate 5 Dorito chips, I will never do that again I thought I was going to die. Cramping, dizzy, heart pounding, sweat rolling off my face, for about 2 hours. Then I finally throw up. Okay wrong thing to do I know …BIG DUMBIE…sometimes I have to learn the hard way.

Stop laughing I got it….wont do that again. I have also been walking more I am up to a mile in a half a day. As of today I have now lost 23 pounds and Shawna is laughing at my very baggie parts. I want to loss a few more pounds before I go to buy new pants. Over all things are a lot better and I know that I did not make the wrong decision. I want to say thank you to Shawna my wife for dealing with me for the last 2 weeks. I am not the nicest person to be around when I don’t feel good. I also want to say thank you to everyone on the website that have been giving me encouragement and support.

My Story

Hello,
My name is Carl, I am 44 years old and this is my story.
My wife Shawna has been telling me about this website for awhile, so I thought I would check it out. Shawna has been researching WLS for several years and I was never really interested in it. I have always thought of surgery as the last resort. I have been over weight since I was a child. The heaviest that I have ever been in my life is 328 pounds. I was in construction at the age of 16. During the 20 years that I worked in that field, I have broken several bones, including breaking my back twice. Over the years I went up and down with my weight and finally had to change careers due to pain. I stopped working construction in 1997 and went into the medical field. Since I was no longer as active as I once was, I started gaining weight again and could not get it off. Shawna and I went on every weight loss and diet program that we could find. Pills, shots, exercise, you name it we did it, and nothing worked. In 2003 I had back surgery and now I have titanium cage in my lower back. L-4 to L-5, L-5 to the sacrum. I am in pain about 75% of the time and all my weight is really starting to affect my life even more. In 2004 I went from being a phlebotomist to an RN. Floor work at first, and now I work as a Surgical Nurse. I am finding it very hard to continue in this job that I love being so heavy. I do not feel that I am doing my best. Shawna talked me into going to see Dr. Syn about my weight problems. After sitting and listening to Dr. Syn and Shannon, his Dietitian. I realized that the RNY surgery might help me with my weight. My consultation was on June 4th. I have been approved for the RNY surgery and am waiting for my surgery date to be set. I feel that it is the best decision that I have ever made.
