6 Week Update on April 28, 2012 8:57 am
Actually, it's almost 7 weeks since I've had surgery. But I wanted to blog exciting results from a 6 week post surgical check up I had with my PCP: My blood pressure, cholesterol, and glucose levels are all within NORMAL range. This is all without medication. Before surgery, I couldn't even get into normal range WITH medication. I will no longer have to take high blood pressure medication or high cholesterol medication. I won't have to start diabectic medication which as going to happen if I didn't have surgery.
To me, the surgery has already been a success. I still have weight to lose, but getting my health back was my primary goal. My asthma and joint aches have also improved dramatically. I have not had a single issue of urinary incontinence since surgery either. (Before I could not laugh, cough, or sneeze without an issue.)
To date, I've lost 42 pounds. I'm down from a size 22 to a size 16 - and beginning to fit into size 14. I have been following drs instructions to the letter. The gastric artery bleed scared me and I don't want any other complications. So far the only food I can't tolerate yet is real eggs. I do fine with Egg Beaters, just not the real thing. I've gotten sick twice with them, so I'll hold off for now.
My energy level is great. I just keep working at meeting my protein and fluid requirements every day. That, and a couple of bouts with head hunger, have been my biggest challenges.
Until next time....

Back Home Safe and Sound on March 16, 2012 7:32 pm
I'm home from the hospital and recovering. Had a complication with a GI artery bleeding. Was not fun. It caused alot of pain and throwing up of blood until a GI DR was able to cauterize it. Spent some time in ICU, but all is proceeding as normal now. I only ended up staying one extra day in the hospital. It is so much easier recovering at home. I am taking it slow, but steady.
Thanks to everyone for the encouragement.
Until next time....

Clean Up and Clean Out on March 11, 2012 12:05 pm
Tomorrow is my surgery date. I've been very busy and the time has just flown by. Today, I'm in the process of trying to get my life organized. I want to get the house as clean as I can, get as much laundry done ahead of time, and possibly get the dog washed and cut by tonight. My three boys will handle things fine on their own, but I want to come home to the least amount of chaos possible. I just got done with the magnesium citrate awhile ago. It was A LOT easier than the go-lyghtly I had to drink a couple of weeks ago for a colonoscopy!
Well, lots to do, so I'll report back once I'm home from the hospital and on the losing side.
Until next time....

Liquids It Is on March 1, 2012 4:22 pm
Well, tomorrow I start my liquid protein diet. That means I only have 10 days left before my surgery! This can be such a long, drawn out process and then all of a sudden, time is rushing and I'm getting very nervous.
I know this is the way to better health, but today is my last day of eating my old "normal." Right now, I want more than anything to be healthy and fit. Let's see how I feel on day 10 of liquid protein, or year 2 of post RNY. Can I really say good-bye to some of my favorite foods forever? It might seem weird, but I'm hoping I get dumping syndrome. I have a wicked sweet tooth and dumping might be the best way for me to beat it!
Until next time......

The Wait on February 18, 2012 2:12 pm
22 days until my surgery. I find myself waiting just like I did when I was pregnant. I feel like my life is on hold somewhat and I'm waiting to begin again once I have the baby, or in this case, have the surgery.
Monday I have a regular screening because I'm 50 colonoscopy. I have a short stint with the liquid diet and clean out. I'm trying to look at it as a trial run.
This all has happened fairly quick for me. Still, the waiting is hard. I'm still trying to find a protein drink I can tolerate on a daily basis. The only one I like so far is Carnation Instant Breakfast Essential. Not sure if that will be enough protein though. I have my last visit with the nutritionist on Monday, too. So, I'll talk to her about it then.
Until next time.....

My Story
Hi. I'm a 50 year old wife and mother of 5. I'm 5' 3' and weigh 210. I come from a family plagued with weight problems. Seems like we're all overweight, just got done being overweight, or are about to become overweight. I was born premature and only weighed 2 lbs 10 ozs at birth. I didn't start to struggle with my weight until about age 37. Maybe that's why? But I have family members who have struggled with it all of their lives. I gained weight during the pregnancy of my son, Keenan. I'd been able to take off the "baby" weight from my other kids, but not thistime. I tried LOTS of things to lose the extra pounds...Weight Watchers, NutriSystems, LA Weight Loss, YMCA, Seattle Sutton, etc. Since his birth, I've developed asthma, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, pre diabetes, sleep apnea, etc...With 5 kids from 31 - 13, I need to be healthy. Right now, I belong to LA Fitness. I've belonged since July '11. I've worked out pretty consistently 3xs a week. I've not been so consistent over the holidays. Part of it is time related, but part of it is frustration too. I just don't see a lot of movement on the scale. Okay, maybe I see a little, but it's usually in the wrong direction! My little sister had RNY in 2006 and has been successful keeping the weight off. I said I would NEVER do that. TOO DRASTIC! But now, after so many years of trying to do it on my own and failing, I've changed my mind. I attended an information seminar on 12/6/11. After filling out the paperwork, I scheduled my first set of appointments for 1/4/12. I've been learning a lot from the stories of others so I thought I would blog about my own journey too. Until next time....
