My Story

I am 44.  I weighed 266 pounds at the Doctors office yesterday.   I went for a walk with my dog yesterday.  She wanted to run.  I couldn't.  Flashback 12 years.  I was a confident 32 year-old, 125 lb. mother of three.  I played women's indoor soccer twice a week, ran nearly every day,  and taught tennis in the summer for the school district.  I was a ski instructor when my husband and I met in 1986.  Our honeymoon was in Yosemite, rockclimbing.  WHAT HAPPENED!!!  I feel like I have woken from a horrible dream, but GUESS WHAT?  I am still fat!  I have medical issues not related  to the extra human I am carrying around with me.  First, I have "Mixed connective tissue disease".  Short answer, I have several individual diseases, all considered "mixed connective disease" or "autoimmune disease".  So how does that make me fat?  My disease is somthing like Lupus, I have the butterfly rash, severe joint issues, spinal pain, migraine headaches, seizures, palpitations, eye problems.  I also, like many of you, have Fibromyalgia.  This lovely co-conspirator makes me feel as if I have that all over body ache one gets when they have a temp of 103, only I have it all the time.  There is not a single system of my body that has not been affected.  The largest challenge is fatigue.  Dealing with this much pain on a daily basis takes it out of you.  I will also tell you all that all three of my kids are still at home, along with most of thier freinds (I have raised more than 3....) and I work full time.  How do I do it?  My house is a disaster area, I am a week (at  least) behind in laundry.  I also have a very patient, concerned, supportive husband and partner in life, and I have three pretty terrific kids.  But, back to the basic question, How did this history make me fat?  As I became more tired and sore the exercise levels fell off.  I was also placed on prednisone and a few other live saving, but weight-gaining meds for the last 18 years,  and between the two, here I am.  I am lucky, I have a flexible family, that like the fact that I laugh at myself (what else can I do?).
And so my adventure begins.
