Surgeon Testimonial

Kenneth Cleveland, M.D.
I highly recommend Dr. Ken Cleveland at the Weight Loss Management Clinic associated with Central Mississippi Medical Center in Jackson, MS. My first impression was one of extreme competence. His knowledge of obesity and surgical strategies for weight loss is phenomenal. As time went on, I sincerely appreciated his \"no beating around the bush\" attitude. He answered my questions and provided specific information without trying to \"sell me\" on the idea. Even when I asked hard questions on the risks of surgery and the overall success rate of the program,(not that there was anything to hide) he was honest and forthcoming. His strong belief in surgery as the beginning of a process instead of a life altering event kept my feet to the fire during those early months when determining what I could/should do to be successful was difficult.rnrnThe nurses in the clinic are incredible. Most of them are former patients and their personal experiences made their care more personalized. No matter the question or request, they were always there for me with good advice, helpful information and a listening ear. The clinic itself is professionally run and timely appointments are a plus. There is a mentor available if requested and follow-up peer sessions on a monthly basis.rnrnIf I had to list a negative, it would be with the business process. Since I was a cash-paying patient, all related medical expenses for 12 months were to be covered by the clinic. As of now they have been, but sometimes I feel as if I'm being \"put off\" when I bring unpaid bills to their attention. On two different occasions creditors have contacted me because bills were not paid in a timely manner. rnrnThere is a very structured pre and post op program for all types of WLS. I went through a number of question/answer sessions and explicit training of the physical after effects and what/how to eat at specific intervals. Numerous tests were required to make sure I was mentally and physically fit to have this surgery and the follow-up care was excellent. I still have routine bloodwork done and visits with the doctor.rnrnOverall, I would rate my experience with Dr. Cleveland as exceptional. For me, his blend of humor/warmth and \"drill sargeant attitude\" is just what I need to be successful. rnrn

Magic number

Aug. 19- Today I dropped below 200.  I weigh 198lbs.  My first goal has been met.  I can take a bath and not worry about how I'm going to get out of the tub.  I can meet basic physical needs without having to become a contortionist.  I can even sleep without waking up sore from having too much weight on my shoulder or chest.   Will I ever stop worring about possible side effects from the surgery?

First post-op doctor visit
on August 14, 2008 1:23 pm
I've lost 18 lbs since July 24.  The incisions look great and even though I'm not getting in the water and protein recommended for this stage, Dr. Cleveland says it'll get better each week.  I worked for a few hours this morning and was surprised at how tired I was.  Luckily I don't have to be back at full speed for a couple of weeks.  Since yesterday's lunch of chicken salad came up, nothing is sitting well in the pouch.  I'll keep trying until I find something that makes it happy.

In the land of the living

July 28th- Day of Surgery- I didn't realize how hard it would be on my family.  They were so frightened that something would happen and I wouldn't be okay.  This was the first elective surgery I'd ever had and in our family, that's not done.  The Weight Loss Management Clinic prepared me well for what would happen immediately before and after surgery.  There were no surprises the first day other than being nauseas.
July 29- The nausea is awful!!  When I went for the sip test to check for leakage they wanted me to drink gross stuff which was hard because everything was making me sick.  Then they wanted to "tip" the table.  I had to stand on the bottom ledge as the table was standing vertical and then they lowered it to horizontal pretty quickly.  Needless to say it wasn't long before they were rewarded for their efforts.  At least I passed so there won't have to be surgery to repair the leaks.  YEA!!
July 30/31- Did I really elect to have this surgery?  Did I really choose to have my insides rearranged to control my eating?  What was I thinking?
August 1-2: Where is this temperature coming from?  I called the doctor and she told me to keep taking my pain medication since it has Tylenol in it.  NO PROBLEM!

August 3- Happy Birthday to me.   I wonder how my life will be changed by this event?  How will next year’s birthday be different?  How will I be different?

It’s become obvious that I’m going to have to relearn how to swallow.  Evidently I swallow a lot of air and this may be one of the reasons I’ve suffered from GERD.  Now that the pouch is tiny, there’s no room for excess air.  I’m working hard on sipping without gulping.

Aug. 4-6  Last week the problem was getting things to stay down.  This week, the problem is getting things to stay in.  It seems that 5 minutes after eating everything runs through.  It’s hard getting protein anyway without losing it immediately.  I’m feeling weak and don’t seem to be where others are that had surgery the same day I did.

Aug. 7-9-  YEA for Smoothie King!!!   I finally found a combination of liquids, fruit, juices and protein (with fiber to calm the runs) that tastes great!  I’ve also been eating a pureed meal of protein each day and my energy is so much better.  And…the fever’s gone!  Now I can see why people say they can possibly go back to work at 2 weeks.  I might can go for a few hours next week too.
