Surgeon Testimonial

Denis Halmi, M.D.
I had a very good first meeting with Dr. Halmi. He explained all of my options and did not try to sway my opionion on going open or via lap RNY. I had already decided to go Lap anyway (Less recovery time). Not alot of small talk, very professional and to the point.

BMI Under 30!
on August 31, 2007 6:14 am
I am now officially under BMI of 30. I am down over 80 lbs and I feel great.  people that have not seen me in a while say I look like another person.  I am just following the pouch instructions.  Drinking alot of water (Thank god for Fruit2O)   and I just always throw away half of a sandwich.  I just never allow large portions of food to be put in front of me.  I only wish I did this years earlier.

Who am I???
on July 4, 2007 8:02 pm
I was walking through a strip mall and there was a full length mirror that I passed by and I almost did not reconize myself. I mean, I almost waved at the person in the mirror thinking it was someone else...

I am still big but just a smaller big :-)

Hey, I ate a salad today and it stayed down "YES", I love salads.  But I am still following the pouch rules and everything works out great.

I work out every chance I get.  My energy is picking up. Simple things like washing car vs paying for it. Gardening, walking around the mall all counts. I eat meat, just very, very small portions. I ate one bite of steak and I was satisfied. The rest is veggies. Still drinking lots of water.

My clothes are falling off of me but I dont want to spend too much money on new clothes yet. I love that I can buy clothes off the rack now and not just at the big stores.

I dumped twice last week and one time it was for drinking to close to a meal the other was because I ate a little rice (rice is bad)  Sometimes you just forget.

I am also trying new foods.  Remember only try new foods at home.  The job is the wrong place to try a new food (Trust me)

I find myself avoiding some of my friends becuase they were my food buddies.  You know who they are.  The Hey Claude let go get some ......... (place any fatty food here)

I now go out with people that eat healthier.  But I must tell you, my fatty food friends did seem to have more fun...

Halfway there!!!
on June 27, 2007 4:41 pm
2 months and I have lost 55lbs!!!  Most important is that I am not hungry.  Just follow the rules.  Protein in morning. very small meals.  chew to mush. workout, workout, workout.  Sometimes I am tired but I am doing OK. I eat veggie every other day. I am drinking lots of water. I only wish I had done this earlier in my life.

First Dr's Visit after Surgery
on June 12, 2007 5:18 pm
Based on my Dr's scale I have lost a total of 45lbs which is great.  I have learned that I should stay away from salty foods. I retain water  when I eat sunflower seeds and other real salty foods.  Once I stop eating them the weight drops off pretty fast. When I saw the dietian she just told me to keep doing what I a doing.

My first WOW moment !!!
on June 7, 2007 6:30 pm
I ran out of holes on my belt and I had to get a new belt!!! I am getting on my wife's nerve since all my clothes look like they are falling off. My wife is afraid that sh is going to gain weight since I am not finishing her food. My weight loss has slowed down to about 2-3lbs per week which is still great. I find when I exersize I just fel better and charged for the day.

My Story

Hello everyone, I’m a married 42 year old father of two boys (11 & 15). I have been over weight every since I was 25. (I got a full time job and became less active). Recently during a period of road rage a woman called me a “Fat Basturd” because I made an illegal U-turn. I just could not stop thinking about of all the things she could have called me, she choose to define me by those terms. (I’m African American; I wear Glasses, come on anything but fat!)  It made me think about my appearance.  It also made me realize that I have been avoiding things in my life and events with my family because of my weight. (Roller coasters, Gyms, Wicker Furniture, etc.). I come from a family of big eaters and big people. Food has always defined our happiness. My father is diabetic and it has required him to go through multiple amputations. My older brother is also diabetic. Soooo I figured unless I want to go down the same path, I better do something to improve my health.  Let the journey begin…..The first slap in the face was when I called my insurance company and they asked me if I have  done a 6 month diet. I replied that I have been on a diet for the last 15 years.  You name the diet and I have done it. They want a physician supervised diet, I did one but it was more than 2 years ago and NutriSystems does not count. So one more diet won’t kill me. All I got out of this “Supervised” diet was a torn Achilles tendon over exercising.  Prior to that diet I dropped from my peak of  340 to 300 on my own. I have plateau,  I have been fighting 300 for two years. I just cannot break that 300-295 range even if I starve myself.  Well, I have done it, I have submitted my paperwork to my insurance company for approval. I have reviewed their requirements and I meet them, +40 BMI and 6 month physician supervised diet. Now I am waiting for my insurance companies response. I am not really worried since I worked for a insurance company in claims processing so I know the system.  I provided the 6 month diet from a certified physician, documentation of prior diets in the last 2 years and copies of prescriptions of Actos for my pre-diabetes.  This is weird, I am diagnosis as Pre-diabetic.  This means my numbers are heading towards being diabetic (but I am not yet full diabetic) but this is prevented by taking the medication for diabetes - Actos. Does this mean that I do not have a co-morbidity of diabetes??? Wouldn’t it be sad if I needed to stop taking my medication for diabetes so I can get full diabetes so I can get the surgery to cure my diabetes. Wow that make my head hurt just thinking about it..

Anyway I’m just here waiting for my approval.
