Surgeon Testimonial

Benjamin Schneider
I really liked Dr. Schneider. He presented at the first information session I attended and I really liked his personality and he had the type of experience I was looking for. He also had a great bedside manner which is just as important to me as good surgical skills. Overall I had no complications except for some muscle stitch pain that is hanging on. He says he does tight muscle stitches to prevent hernias that sometimes bother people. The pain is driving me crazy but if it prevents a hernia and another surgery down the road, it is worth it. And not all of his patients have as much pain as I am having. Overall I have been very pleased with him and his team and would definitely recommend him to anyone else considering this surgery in the Boston area.rnrnThe whole process at BIDMC is multidisciplinary and I have had a great experience with everyone so far, from the surgeon to his fellows to the nutritionist and the nurses I had immediately post-op. They really emphasize aftercare and have a very structured approach. Before surgery you even have to sign a contract stating that you will come to all follow-up appointments. In my opinion that is a positive thing, and I think that BIDMC really has the right idea about how to treat their patients.

99.2 Pounds lost!
on September 28, 2008 2:13 pm
I am down to 155.8 this week.  I am soooo close to joining the century club.  I remember when I first starting using the tracker it said "105 pounds left to lose."  Now it says "5.8 left to lose."  I really never thought I would make it this close to my goal.  Today I bought my second pair of size 6s.  I never want to officially say I wear a certain size until I have more than one of them, but it is official now.  I am a size 6.  I never even imagined my frame could fit in a single digit size.  This surgery is amazing.  It is the best thing I have ever done for myself.  Ever.

10 months and chugging along....
on September 21, 2008 7:44 am
So my weight is hovering in the upper 150s.  Today I weighed in at 157.4.  I just want to get down to 155 and join the century club already!  I have been going up and down a pound or two per week lately but overall I am slightly down.  I lost 3 pounds last month and 3.4 this month, so I hope things are stilll moving along.  I am happy with the number on the scale and happy with the size I am wearing (last night I bought my first size 6!!!!) but I can't quite say I am happy with my body.  Oh well, I am a hell of a lot happier than I was 97 pounds heavier regardless of how wrinkly and deflated my breasts are and how squishy my stomach is.  I have been really really good at the gym lately and doing all sorts of weight training which I was never able to get into before now.  Even though I only lost 3.4 pounds this month I am down another 2 inches in my waist for a total of 18 inches.  That is just insane.  I still feel like my waist is gigantic, I can't even fathom that it was 18 inches bigger at one point.  I am definitely going to need another shopping spree before it gets colder.  I made it through the summer with buying various pieces along the way but now I have absolutely zero cold weather clothes in my size.  It's nice to need smaller clothes, but getting expensive!!!

I got the results back from my cardiac tests and it turns out I am having premature ventricular contractions (PVCs).  My doctor said these can occur even though everything else is healthy and that appears to be the case for me, but they are occurring very very frequently (several per minute throughout the day).  Common causes are stimulants, electrolyte imbalances and anxiety.  My stimulant intake is about 1 or 2 diet sodas per week and my electrolytes tested fine so I know this is probably caused by anxiety.  I was dating this guy I work with for a while, we became semi serious, then I found out he lied to me about something major.  We didn't talk for a little while but now we have been talking again and he has been the one training me at the gym.  All the feelings are still there and stronger than ever and every day I struggle with the question of can I give him another chance or not and can I believe the things he is telling me.  I think about him every second I am awake and dream about him every night.  I am a mess when it comes to matters of the heart, I can't help but let them consume me and I know this is causing so much anxiety for me.  Plus I have to see him every day at work which makes things a million times worse.  He has been great for the past 6 weeks we have been talking again and saying and doing everything right but I can't help but doubt everything that comes out of his mouth.  So I don't think it is a coincidence that my heart palpitations started right around the time we started talking again.  But now what to do about it??? :(

Normal BMI!!!
on September 7, 2008 7:37 am
If I calculate my BMI based on my height of 5' 6.5" instead of just 5' 6" my weight of 157 this morning puts me at a BMI of exactly 25!!!  That is down from 41.  Amazing.  I never thought I would make it this far.  I was watching a tv show on a person who got WLS and she kept saying that her biggest fear was death.  My biggest fear was it not working.  That might sound ridiculous to say, but it is true!!  Well I guess with 98 pounds down and a normal BMI I can safely say it worked.  Now I just need to keep it working for me.  Overall this journey has been very easy for me.  Sometimes I worry that it has been too easy and something's got to give.  I am grateful that I have been so lucky though.  I have never dumped or vomited or hardly felt sick at all.  I eat a very balanced diet but still eat things I enjoy, just much less of them.  I probably have at least a small piece of chocolate every day.  I'm not a perfect post op and I don't follow the rules to a T but I have made major lifestyle changes that I believe I can stick with for the rest of my life and it's working for me.  Two more pounds to 100 pounds lost!!! :)

My heart is broken???
on September 5, 2008 6:34 pm
And not in the figurative sense.  For the last couple days I have been having a really irregular heart rate.  It beats normally, then skips a beat, then has an extra hard "make up" beat.  Its like a palpitation.  I can feel the extra beat and it almost makes me lose my breath for a second.  It is completely irregular, sometimes 100 regular beats before a skip, sometimes 2.  But this has been going on almost steadily for the past 3 days.  I called my doctor and made an appointment for Monday.  I feel fine otherwise and yesterday I went to the gym while feeling this way and got through my workout as normal.  It is just a little uncomfortable, really annoying, and a little scary.  The palpatation sensation is definitely something I have felt before but never this regularly.  Yesterday was the first time I really spent a lot of time checking my pulse and figuring out that the sensation was related to something I could count.  It is kind of freaking me out.  I have been working out more lately but not in any extreme sense.  I have always done a lot of cardio and only recently have I added a lot of weight training.  But I don't think that would affect my heart.  Of course I am making myself paranoid with all the internet research and self diagnosing I have been doing.  There are a million different causes of arrhythmia and sometimes its just there even though everything is healthy so I need to stop worrying.  Some say anxiety can cause it.  I have been stressed lately but not outrageously so.  I also saw one source that said low electrolyte levels can cause this too.  So far since surgery all of my labs have been perfect, the last being done in May, so I doubt that is the cause but given being a post op that might be the most likely?  I have been extra careful the last two days to be extra hydrated and take all my vitamins and eat and drink things with magnesium and potassium and such.  No change though.  I have no idea if this is even remotely WLS related but its kind of weird that I am in better shape now than I have ever been in my whole life and now I am experiencing this weird symptom.  So who knows.  If anyone has gone through anything similar and has any input I would love to hear about it.
