My Story

I had a BPD (by a butcher) and thus had numerous complications, starting 5 days post op with a leak and coding on the CT table.  I was then unable to breathe on my own and went on a ventilator at that time.  I spent 69 days in the hospital, 6 weeks of that in a coma on life support.  At one point, I had 13 different infections raging at one time.  I was in multi-system failure, (respiratory, congestive heart failure, kidney and liver).  I was only given a 10% chance of survival.  But 39 surgeries and 5 years later, I am still here and doing great now.  I do have a lot of chronic problems though.  My whole abdomen has been rebuilt again and again.  I have had numerous infections and surgeries to open and drain the abscesses.  I had several blood clots in both legs while in the coma and have a filter in place to keep them from moving.  I have ended up with a tummy tuck in the process of all these surgeries as they had to keep pulling down to get healthy skin to sew up.  I still have hernias, but they have done all they can do.  The mesh is holding over the hole, but the muscle never will.  My liver still hangs out partially into one of the hernias.  They watch my labs and try to keep an eye on them to make sure my liver labs don't elevate more than they normally are.  There is also a mass on my liver that they would like to biopsy, but it is in a dangerous location and can't safely be done.  So we watch it with CT's and it isn't growing, so we will leave well enough alone.  I have tons of adhesions, and have pain occaisionally from them.  Otherwise, I am doing better than I have in many years.  I can move around and exercise and feel pretty good most of the time.  I would however like to lose more weight.  I only lost 165 lbs.  and really would like to lose another 48 to reach my goal.  I didn't get the opportunity to learn the diet, as I was too sick to benefit from the BPD.  I was on high protien, high calorie diet to help my wounds heal.  Now I need to learn it all, so that I can lose the rest of the weight.
