My Story

My Obesity Problem:

I have been heavy all of my life, not just in my 20's but also as a child. Diets began at about age 12 and continued sporadically throughout my life. When a diet works for me, I lost my standards 15-20 pounds and then gained it back

My Family History:

My grandmothers were obese and one died from a heart attack and all my uncles on my father’s side are overweight and have diabetes, hypertension and heart conditions, my big fears are: becoming diabetic, heart problem or other diseases related to obesity.  I want to live longer and have children. I have been researching WLS for over a year, I have weighed the risks and benefits and thought long and heard about this surgery and my conclusion is: With the Help of God and Weight loss Surgery, this combination will save my life.

How I met my Husband:

My Husband Daniel, and I Dagmaris, got married 6 years ago. We met in a church in Puerto Rico when his grandfather had a car accident and he flew from the US to Puerto Rico to help his mother take care of his grandfather. Then after being in Puerto Rico for 9 months he move to FL with his mom and Grandfather. We continue our friendship until one day he got back to Puerto Rico and told me that he was in love with me and he wanted to spend the rest of his life with me and finally we married a year later (2000).

Our Problem and how hard we tried to have a baby?

When I was 10, I began menstruating, but my periods never became regular. At age 18, they stopped altogether. I also started putting on weight, but at the time I had no idea that these symptoms were related to the missed periods. I went to an OB/GYN in my country Puerto Rico, The doctor told me that I had PCOS and I had to loss weight and my periods would "regulate themselves". I started the struggle of losing weight, but for some reason I was gaining more weight.
The year ended and my period never returned. I basically ignored it - it was actually kind of nice not having to put up with the whole monthly deal - and I didn't get a period again for 4 more years, and I kept putting on more and more weight. I was also tired most of the time.
In 2000, (I was 22 years), I married Daniel (27 years), my wonderful husband. Right away we started talking about having a family. He knew about my problem and we both knew we would need help getting pregnant. However, we put it off and tried the "natural" way for a year. Of course, because I wasn't ovulating, nothing happened.

How I decide to Have Weight Loss Surgery

In 2006, Finally I get pregnant with a fertility treatment, but I miscarriage at 5˝ week, My Doctor told me that my overweight and having PolyCystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) a major cause of infertility including excessive weight gain and obesity increase the risk of having miscarriages, Then after some labs and test, I was diagnosed with Diabetes and Mild Sleep Apnea. This was a wake call for me and I started the process to having this surgery, The reason that I need this surgery so badly is because I fear for my life; I have tried so many diets in the past and also one year supervised diet on my last base (Yokota AB). I exercise as often as I can, but find that I can barely breathe and have an increased heart rate just walking across a room!

My Consult with PCP to get a Referral

I just talk to him, explain my reasons and he make a referral to a Bariatric Surgeon Dr. Frazee.

My first consult with Dr. Richard Frazee

He talk to me explain all the risk and benefits, I was already decided about having this surgery so his secretary make a Letter of necessity to my Insurance (Tricare-Military) and 3 days after I got an approval for Surgery and Psychology evaluation etc.
