Surgeon TestimonialRandall J. Bolar M.D.I spent a year researching WLS and surgeons here in central Kentucky. Dr. Bolar was consistently reviewed as a caring, and competent professional. On my first visit, he explained the RNY procedure, risks, and aftercare, as well as answered a number of questions. My paperwork was then reviewed by an RN who mentioned that I would need to undertake a six month supervised diet. Bolar's office called regularly too check on my progress. Bolar saw me daily after my surgery while in the hospital and aftercare continues. I'd rate him a 9

What a wonderful Thanksgiving weekend. Justin came home Tuesday evening and it was great to spend some quality time with him. Thursday we had 5 dinner guest. Marge did most of the preparation and Justin and readied the house and yard for company. We had a traditional meal and I was able to eat some of everything. I was careful to not overeat and evening had some samples of desserts. We had a large variety of wines for before, during, and after the meal. I had my small share, got a little tipsy, and just loved the day.
Friday through Sunday, we just laid back, enjoyed videos, and did little formal work. I managed to gain 2 pounds but I'm sure they will come off within days. Saturday, we are going to my surgeon's firm's "Bariatric Ball." I'm going as Colonel Sanders. This will be Marge's first bariatric event.
This afternoon, I'm going to the Ky. Retirement Systems and sign my papers effecting retirement on January 1. Tomorrow, I'll submit my formal letter of retirement to my boss. IT"S REALLY HAPPENING AND I'M 110 POUNDS THINNER!!!!!

I went to my first OH National Meeting in Lexington last Friday and Saturday. I had the privelege of hanging out with some other guys from the men's board: Dx, Tim, Joe, and Mike. We spent hours storying, exchanging information, and just BSing. Dx lead the men's sessions and he was prepared: I learned a great deal. He's an awesome teacher and his students are incredibly lucky. Joe is a great guy and he put us in touch with Buckeye, an Ohioan like Joe. Tim is a great guy who's fired and inspired with WLS... and over 200 pounds in 8 months. Mike, our Cards Fan, is a super guy whose wit and comments made so much sense. The other folks there, particularly the Virginia gals, just iced the cake! Lastly, Monica Ganz provided great sessions packed with some new information.

Sunday we leave for a week with friends in glorious Williamsburg. The 38s fit better. I'm now down 112 pounds. Had my 3rd cardiologist visit since my rny.
Kickin' ass meeting!!!
The NP was stunned with my results. My cardiomyopathy is gone. That rarely happens even with rny patients. All indicators in my bloodwork are now in normal ranges.

I had my colonoscopy in late August and Dr. Niegbert took one polyp and one "rhoid." I will have another one in 3 years. My weight hasn't changed over 3 pounds in two months so I guess I'm basically in maintanence. I feel good although I have slacked off the gym time. I still do plenty of yard work to make up some of the exercise.
My waist is now 39 inches. I do wear some 38 pants but they are a little snug.

I saw Dr Ed Niegbert last week for my 1 year check-up and made arrangements for a colonoscopy in a few weeks. Everything checked out OK.
Neigbert's program requires a $250 fee of all patients which offsets the "lifetime" nutritional and exercise counseling and the monthly discussion groups. They have a gym there and also take body fat readings. For a local Lexingtonian, it's a much better deal. Tomorrow, I go and have an exercise and nutitional workup.

My Story
I’m Dave and I currently have 322 pounds on my 5’10 1/2 inch frame! I have lost and gained well over 1000 pounds during my 55 years. I have always had weight issues. From 1976-1989, I maintained my weight in the 215-pound range. My lowest weight registered 188 in 1982. My morbidities did not surface until the early 1990s. I have a series of issues wrapped around the primary diagnosis of cardiomyopathy. I also have had two substantial injuries that have greatly limited the last several years of my life. In May 2002, I was in a head-on auto accident leaving me with disabling back issues. Dull to moderate pain is a part of my life. In 2003, I fell down our basement stairs, breaking my ankle. While it has healed after surgery, I have not been able to walk long distances or hills because of the pain. It is time to step up and stop these worsening conditions. I want to maintain a vigorous seniorhood. I met my wife, Margery, at the University of New Mexico freshman orientation dance. We’ve been blessed with a loving 35-year marriage. She’s such a beauty, inside and out. We have two wonderful children, a deceased daughter, Cathy, and a wonderful son, Justin. He is a university sophomore, currently pursuing prerequisites for entering a physical therapy program. Marge and I look forward to spending lots of quality time with Justin and hope that we will have opportunities to spoil grandchildren in the not too distant future. In my earlier years, I enjoyed tennis, hiking, and adventuresome travel. I long for all three. We’ve made two trips to Brisbane, Australia where my older brother and his family reside. We are looking forward to making regular trips there after retirement. That requires a twenty-hour plane trip and losing weight is a requirement for making that trip safely and comfortably. I also want to experience the climes of Costa Rica, the majesty of Europe, and many areas here in our own country with little or no physical restriction. I began my research on WLS last summer and chose Dr. Randall Bolar in Lexington, KY to perform my RnY. He’s performed over 3000 bariatric surgeries during his over twenty-year career span. I saw him in September 2004, and learned that I was a good candidate for laproscopic RnY and he projected that I might well lose 120 pounds with the RnY tool. I found that although I had been on numerous Dr. suggested diets, my insurance company, Bluegrass Family Health (BFH), required a six-month physician supervised diet and so I started in October with my cardiologist monitoring. The six months ended in April and one of Dr. Bolar’s RNs, Nancy, submitted my package to BFH. It was approved within days! I now have a July 6 surgery date. We have been busy lately focusing on our house and readying for a visit from several of our Aussie relatives! Painting, structural work and putting in a wireless fence for our two dogs, Queso Grande (Big Cheese) and Liza, have taken time, but the contractors are doing a great job! It will be comforting knowing that our house and yard are in good shape as I go under the knife and then return home.
