Five Month Update!
on March 13, 2009 8:54 pm
I'm down 72 lbs.

SEVENTY-TWO pounds! I can't believe it. I walked eighteen holes of golf today, and felt fantastic afterwards. VSG is the best thing I have ever done -- without question.

Two week anniversary!
on October 22, 2008 7:51 pm
Well, it's been two weeks, and I'm down 20 lbs. so far. Woohoo!!

I also feel fantastic! I've been sleeping better than I have in five years. I've been walking (almost) every day. I have energy, and am loving life right now. Eating pretty much any full liquid that I want (shakes, soups, cream soups, healthy choice fudge bars (1 per day max), pudding, jello, etc.

Should be on soft foods soon and am loooking forward to that.

One week out!
on October 16, 2008 3:28 pm
Well, I finally had my surgery (October 8th), and I'm now one week out. Thought I'd add a bit to my blog.

Turns out I had a mild case of pneumonia when I went in for surgery, and came out of surgery with two mildly collapsed lungs. Let me tell you, recovering from surgery, pneumonia, and two collapsed lungs has NOT been fun. LOL!

But, it's only been a week, and today I feel about a 5 on a 1-10 scale, whereas for the three days after surgery, I felt like a 2 or 3, so I'm improving, which is nice!

I'm down six or seven pounds already, but I'm not even focusing on that. I'm trying to focus on eating properly and finding foods that I can eat during the "full liquids" stage. I can eat pretty much anything (have had ZERO problems with vomiting or horrible gas or anything like that), but I just want to find things that fill me up, taste good, and are good for me. One thing I've settled on for the long term that I know I will be eating a lot of is Andersen's Split Pea Soup. YUM!

That's all for now....

I'm finally ready. I think.

I recently turned 40, and am heavier than I've ever been. I stayed around 295ish for a good 5 - 7 years, but an impending divorce and a stressful, sedentary job have combined to move my weight well over 300 lbs. recently. I'm currently at 320, and I just don't see myself losing this weight without significant help.

I'm hoping that WLS will help me....

My Story

I was born August 9, 1967 in Riverside, California. According to my mother, I would drink bottle after bottle and never get sated. I was a "husky" youngster and a pleasantly plump teen. I played baseball in high school and that kept my weight from getting out of control (I fluctuated between 215 and 250 in high school and I'm 6' tall).

After high school I attended U.C. Riverside on a baseball scholarship and was able to keep my weight in the 220 range for two years before injuring my shoulder. The shoulder injury put an end to my aspirations of a professional baseball career and, despondent and depressed, I dropped out of college and got married to a woman I had known for only a few months.

We had a child a year later and that's when my weight started to climb steadily upward. I reached my peak weight of 325 a few months ago and made the final decision that I would get surgery (after thinking about it for a couple years). I vascillated between RNY and Vertical Sleeve for the last couple months, but have decided that the sleeve is the right surgery for me, mainly due to the fact that I need NSAIDs to control back pain.

My surgery date is tomorrow, October 8, 2008 at UCLA Medical Center. Dr. Amir Mehran will perform the surgery.

I'm very excited.
