My name is Dawn, I am married to Steve for 18 years. I have a daughter, Brooke (28), who has my grandson, Levi (7), who is simply wonderful. He calls me Queen! It’s a long story. We will soon be adding a granddaughter, Charlee, sometime in April. Then there is Maxwell (15) our son, he is a freshman in high school. We live in the little town we grew up in, Nappanee, IN or as our kids call it “Napp a no where!” I am very close to my sisters, Andrea and Kendrea; I wish they were able to have WLS too.    I have been over weight since starting nursing school in 1984. I have slowly gained more and more wt until the next thing I know I am morbidly obese! I probably could have paid privately for my RNY if I had all of the money back from all of the things I have done to lose weight. I know I have joined Weight Watchers at least once a year for the past 25 years. I have done everything only to lose some weight and then gain back more.    After being diagnosed with severe GERD and dealing with the symptoms. For me the symptoms were chronic embarrassing non stop cough, vomiting with no help from meds that went on for over a year. I was beginning to fear I would end up with Barrett Esophagus, which is life threatening.  So, I started to research WLS, something I considered surgically induced will power and would not have considered before.   I am an RN and had my surgery at the hospital I work at, Elkhart General Hospital. I work in an out patient clinic for people with chronic pain. My insurance from the hospital paid for all of the surgery but $2, 0000. I had to have my surgery at EGH and the only surgeon that does it there is Dr. Hoekstra so finding a hospital and surgeon was easy, I had to do what I could afford. I was also able to ask a lot of questions to staff all over the hospital to find out the Dr. Hoekstra is very skilled and gifted surgeon, which gave me a lot of peace about the decision.

I dont notice too big of a difference in my pics however the clothes I wore for the one month pics are really loose! I just keep plugging away 2-3 pounds a week.  My feeling is as long as I am losing I'm happy!

1 month out today
on April 24, 2009 5:47 pm
What a difference a month makes.  I am not regretting my RNY anymore.  It has been quite a month of adjustments, but it is getting much easier.  My energy is back to normal most days now.  I am down 16 pounds since surgery so with the 21 I lost before that is a total of 36 pounds.  I am done with pureed foods, trying to eat soft tender meats now.  My nut does not want me to have any carbs at this point, except beans, but I have to admit, every couple of days I have 1 cracker.

One week and one day out!
on April 1, 2009 11:12 am
Well, I am one week and one day out and while I must say I feel better today then a week ago, it was much more painful that I thought it would be.  Everyone that is out a ways says that it was worth it, it is still too soon for me to say that!  I am struggling to get my protien and water in at this point, I am sure it will get easier as time goes on.  I'll just keep plugging away at it and hopefully, soon, I wont regret what I have done!!
