Surgeon Testimonial

Ravi Moonka, M.D.
Met with Dr. Moonka and staff 10/30/06. I am scheduled for RNY 03/14/07. He and staff were very personable and comforting. I'm 3 hours away from VM in Seattle so I have only had one meeting with him. I am scheduled for an appt. two days prior to surgery and the day before surgery so I'm sure I'll see him them and will update this review as time goes on.

The surgery was successful!
on March 25, 2007 9:58 am
I'm feeling much better today and able to sit at the computer longer. I ended up staying in the hospital for 6 days!!! The tumor was very large and embedded in main blood vessels. I was on the operating table for over 7 hours. They had to remove part of my adrenal gland and shaved some of my liver in order to remove the tumor. Turned out to be benign so they went ahead and did the RNY and removed the gallbladder! I'm pretty sore but each day is better. In fact, I'm not even sore where they did the RNY at all...just where they wrangled the tumor out.

I'm having no problems with eating etc. so far...YIPPEE!!! It's weird though...I have to force myself to eat (full liq.) and drink...don't want anything, but then I dream of food and wake up in a panic because I just ate popcorn and I think I'm going to die. So wierd! I'm drinking 4oz. of full. I thought it would only be 2oz. In hospital my meals were given to me in the tiny med cups. I'd down about 3 of those.

Wed. was the first day I could get up without help. I used oxycodone every 2 to 3 hours and Tylenol am and pm. Got a bladder infection so on cipro for that.

I have Type II diabetes & hope to be cured soon!
on February 14, 2007 8:17 am
I have type II diabetes and have been told that this RNY may cure me of this horrible disease that has already cost me so much! I am visually impaired after having to have 14 laser treatments to save my vision and I suffer from neuropathy. I'm on 9 prescriptions including insulin and haven't been able to loose weight. This is my last hope!

I take the following:
Actos 45mg 1-daily/morning
Enalapril 20mg 1-daily/morning
Glipizide 5mg 2-daily/morning/bedtime
Hydrochlorothiazide 25mg 1/2-daily/morning
Lipitor 40mg 1/2-daily/morning
Metformin 500mg 2-daily/morning/bedtime
Methylphenidate 20mg 1 or 2-daily/morning/midday
Gabapentin 300mg 1-daily/bedtime
Humulog 25/75 50/30 2-daily/breakfast 50/dinner 30-50

I'm sick of all the drugs, sick of being sick, and tired of being tired! I am very inspired by all the people on this site that are all willing to help each other and offer their opinions and/or advice.

I have been very scared about the surgery because I have heard horror stories and this is going to be my 2nd major surgery in less than a year! The doctors don't even know if my mass is malignant and don't want to do a biopsy because they have to remove it anyway and so why put me through that. If it looks suspicious, they will not do the gastric bypass at the same time!

I hope and pray that it is benign because I really need this RNY. The last tumor removed in Feb. was a rare cancer but, they apparently got it all with the removal and a good flush of all my organs since the mass had ruptured.

Having Gastric Bypass Soon!
on December 19, 2006 2:31 pm

I'd rather die than go on living with the fear of dying!

I am taking drastic measures by having this surgery, but I can see no other way for me as I've exhausted all other methods without success!

I am a diabetic and take insulin along with 9 other presciptions and it's like catch 22 trying to loose weight with all the meds working against me.

I have lost a significant amount of vision due to diabetic retinopathy and having 14 laser treatments. Just had cataracts removed on both eyes recently too.

I have neuropathy and have an ongoing leg sore that won't heal. I have cronic back pain from the enormous amount of excess weight and suffer from depression....gee, I wonder why?

I'm ready to live the rest of my life in the best health possible.

I'm ready to be "re-born."

My Story

I collasped Feb. 26th, 2006 and ended up in the ER. They did a CT scan and rushed me over to Seattle for an emergency surgery to remove a bleeding grandulocious cell tumor that had ruptured. I had a complete hysterectomy at that time also. In the scan they saw another tumor and ordered another CT scan in Sept. They told me at that time that the tumor looked suspicious and that I should have it taken out ASAP, however, I was already scheduled for eye surgery so they postponed it until Dec.

My GP recommended I have the RNY at the same time so I went over to Seattle to have all the preliminary tests and passed. They submitted the info. to the ins. co. and told them that the surgery was urgent.

After 4 months of waiting to see if the insurance would cover it (someone dropped the ball and papers didn't get submitted) I finally found out last week that our insuranced denied the surgery! I don't have time to appeal as I need to have this tumor removed so we will be paying the extra fees for the second procedure out of our pocket. Still have not heard how much that will be, but if I have to sell my car, I will!!!
