I'm in (0)
I hd just turned 39 years old... was considering a lap-band to help me stick to a diet and lost 90 to 100 pounds.  I've struggling with weight loss/gain all of my adult life... I've been on many different diets including WW.  I have a family history of diabetes and hypertension as well as stroke.  I don't want to have to live with disease due to being obese.  I recently left Kaiser to Blueshield with the hopes of having an easier chance of having the surgery.  I went to a Lap-Band Seminar/Support group and heard about this website... decided to check it out.
I had the surgery 3/17/08 and have not looked back.... Just made 40 years old and pressing forward.
Peace & God Bless.

The Fiber Factor
on August 5, 2008 9:47 am
Okay... fellow WLS and others who are trying to lose weight... I need to talk about this issue.... Constipation.  I recently went for another fill last Tuesday... and guess what?  I had gained weight... 7 pounds to be exact, weighed in at 214 lbs.  I had just weighed 207 lbs. the week before.  How is it possible to gain a whole 7 pounds in a matter of days?  I didn't panic because I knew the culprit was constipation...  trying to keep up with my protein requirements and slacking on my fruits and veggies.... which of course meant I was not getting enough fiber in my diet.  Since having the lap band, I have not been taking my usual fiber supplements and have been trying to find creative ways to add fiber to my diet.  There are a couple of things like Kellogs All Bran Fiber drink mixes, as well as South Beach Living on the Go... but the best thing I have found is Colon Cleanse Bulk Physilium.  Problem with the Colon Cleanse is that it's a thick consistency even when mixed... difficult to get used to.  What I tried doing is mixing it with soy milk and protein powder to disguise it a little.  Bottom line.. I need to keep up with my fiber and my protein.  By Friday I was down to 208 lbs. and this morning I weighed in at 206 lbs. Moral of the story? Don't forget the Fiber Factor

Once Again It's On
on July 20, 2008 12:17 pm
First of all I just had a birthday.... turned 40 at the end of June.  I gotta agree with Lyfe Jennings... "30 is not the new 20" cause 40 damn sure aint the new 30.  Needless to say... I ate cake and sweets and whatever I wanted... put on a couple of birthday pounds, then lost them.
I defer... I feel pretty good, workouts have improved.  I switched up my workout on the weekends to include mostly abs after I finish my cardio because despite losing inches my abs kinda looked the same.  I feel like that is working. I lost another 3 pounds as of yesterday putting me at 208lbs.  I had hoped to have lost more by now but I am not complaining... to be honest.... I aint doing everything I'm supposed to be doing which is why it is clear to me that regardless of WLS or not.... weightloss definitely depends on a willingness to change ones behavior and beliefs about food, nutrition and the nasty word... DIET!!!!   I  am learning that it is a process.  If permanent weightloss is to be achieved..... I gotta get off my ass and do the work.  The band is a helpful tool but it won't make me stop eating b.s.  I gotta do that.  So once again it's on....

Stay encouraged.... and keep up the good work.  Don't be hard on yourselves if you "mess up a little" or get off track.... just wipe the dust off your knees and get back on track.

Peace,

Down 31 pounds post-surgery
on June 10, 2008 4:59 pm
Okay... I saw my surgeon today... got a second fill 1.7cc. He said that he is pleased with my weightloss... not as fast as bypass patients but steady.  Here are the numbers... 211 lbs.  BMI is now 37.4 from 38.9 at last visit.  My consult weight was 248 lbs., pre-op weight was 242.5 and today 211 lbs.  I can live with that.... 48 hours of liquids and then back to real food.  Anyway, hope all are well and staying focused.
Peace,
L.

May 16th.... update
on May 16, 2008 10:49 pm
Just wanted to give an update... As far as my weightloss... despite the fill, not much change since last entry.  I have lost another 3 pounds... I can eat almost as much as before.... at least I can eat a full Healthy Choice or Lean Cuisine meal.  I've been trying to eat less because I can't rely on the band just yet.  I figure that in a way it's good because I am self monitoring which will help stay on track even after I've lost all the weight.  I see my doctor next on June 10th, I expect that I will get another fill.  I'm hoping to lose another 10 pounds by then.  I've been keeping up my workouts and toning..... especially my lower body due to squats and leg presses.
I feel pretty good and my energy is great.
Hope all are well and keeping up the great work....
Peace & God bless,
L.

My First Fill...
on April 29, 2008 8:41 pm
Today is 4/29/06.... about six weeks out.  Weighed in at 219 pounds... yeah! I've lost 23 pounds since surgery and a total of 29 pounds.  My energy is good, and I'm starting to notice a difference... my thighs are smaller but seem less firm... YUCK!!! I have always had a big ol' gut but not a big ol' butt and I'm hoping that I lose the gut which seems to look less prominent but still a gut... and not lose what little butt I have left.... I've been trying to do squats and stuff to build that area... Like Sir Mix A Lot said back in the day... "You can do side bends or pushups but please don't lose that butt".
Okay, I had my first fill today.... 2.5cc whatever that means but I definitely felt the restriction immediately afterwards... the nurse had me drink water to make sure that I could swallow.  Of course, I took a big swig of water with regrets.  It felt like a air bubble in my throat, I thought I was going to choke.
Sip, sip, sip.....
Back to 2 days of liquids and then soft foods again.
Anyway, until the next update!!!!
Peace,
Loretta

My Story

I grew up the second of five kids... As a child, I was not overweight but as I got older and less active the pounds kept coming.  I tried diet after diet with some success but the weight would always come back.  My highest weight has been 254 lbs. although it is 247 now.  I'm 5'3" and used to being thick but the past four years have been emotionally trying and I gained over 50 pounds.
I will be 40 years old this year and am feeling like it's time to take control of my life.  I work as a mental health therapist, I help people learn how to deal with stress, depression and other issues yet I have never really effectively dealt with my own.Taking control of my weight is the first step of many... I have a family history of diabetes, heart disease and stroke... I kept telling myself that I was not getting any of those things, yet kept gaining weight.  It's been a struggle... at my last physical my doctor told me that my glucose was 100 which is almost borderline diabetes... that scared me.  So..... I decided to get serious and went to a WLS support meeting/seminar to find out about the lap-band procedure.
I am looking forward to the rest of my life.... looking forward to healing and being the person God intends me to be.
God bless,
Loretta
