I no longer need a long-handled brush in the shower! Sounds silly, but I had gotten big enough that I really COULDN'T reach everywhere without it before today

News of the Day

Mar 20, 2007

1. I got weighed today - down another 4.1 lbs, for a total of 26.5 lbs in 3 weeks.

2. I have a part-time job lined up, as soon as we can arrange malpractice insurance. One of my colleagues from the hospital is swamped with patients, and invited me to help her out half-time. Since her practice is in one of the Shore towns (and is the only adult medical practice on the island), she gets even busier in the summer, and said she will probably want me full-time by then. If things work out well, she said, by the end of the summer we may be talking partnership. For now, at the rate she quoted me, and forgetting about the excess taxes I've been paying, I'm expecting a $600-700 per month post-tax pay cut. I can absorb that for a couple of months! Once I go to full time, we'll renegotiate to a salary, instead of an hourly rate.

Fired

Mar 16, 2007

My employment with the clinic has been terminated. There have been multiple complaints about my interactions with patients, which is one of the reasons I started therapy. However, the changes I've made have been insufficient to the task, and the clinic has decided that they no longer want me working for them.

I have a couple of leads on possibilities. They have agreed to waive the restrictive covenant in my contract (my contract says I am not allowed to work within 3 miles of the clinic). Also, even though they are technically firing me for cause, they have agreed not to contest an unemployment filing. In the meanwhile, I will contact a locum tenens agency I know and see if there are any temp positions available.

2-week follow-up

Lost another 5 lbs, for a total of 22.4 - now cleared for "soft foods". Had a long chat with Mom about Passover dinner (she's making it instead of my aunt, which means I can now go), and she's going to have a few things made special for me (a baked sweet potato, particularly, since I can't eat the matzo kugel). If the turkey's too dry, I'll blender it with a little gravy. :) Second night, Mom's best friend makes, and I already know her brisket will be more than soft and moist enough to enjoy. Also, Renee serves gefilte fish, which Mom does not, so I could always have more of that (in fact, I bought 4 jars for myself - one piece ought to make a very nice lunch!).

First post-op visit

Mar 06, 2007

1 week post-op visit today. Down SEVENTEEN POINT FOUR POUNDS. Graduated to pureed foods. Came home and made myself a scrambled egg! Yay! In addition to my 3 meals, I have 2 protein shakes and 1/2 cup of protein-fortified pudding or Jell-O every day to make 85-90 gm of protein. That will decline some as I lose weight. I am a happy boy. I'm going to review my post-weight-loss-surgery cookbook, pick two or three recipes and head to the grocery store. :)

Mmmm...

Mar 05, 2007

Today, I got to reintroduce dairy to my diet. This makes me happy. Not only is milk more filling than Crystal Light, I got to make sugar-free pudding! This makes my tongue very happy - pudding is much tastier than Jell-O.

On a concerning note, I find I can easily drink 8 ounces of liquid in 10-15 minutes if I'm not paying attention, even though I'm only SUPPOSED to drink 4 ounces an hour - and I easily ate a half-cup serving of pudding without discomfort. Is it slipping through my pouch easily because it's so soft, or did he make my pouch too big? Clearly, I still need to impose a certain amount of self-discipline, though it's SO difficult.

The edge of the dermabond started to peel off one of the incisions, and I noticed some creamy, thick yellow-tan stuff oozing out of the incision. No redness, heat or pain, but it sure looked like pus. I called the surgeon's nurse coordinator, who assured me what I was seeing was fat necrosis, not pus. The fat is almost literally melting and oozing out of the incision. I'm keeping a Band-Aid on it just to keep it clean and dry, but that's it.

I'm home

Mar 02, 2007

I'm home. I'm crampy and sore and uncomfortable and tired and thirsty and depressed, and I cried this morning because now that it's too late to change my mind, I'm not sure I made the right choice (and the first person who TELLS me I made a mistake gets defriended! I need support for what my life *IS*, not what it was three days ago.). I weighed myself at the hospital this morning, and I was 392.7, so I'm already down 5 lbs from my last visit to JB's office.
