Surgeon Testimonial

David C. Voellinger, MD, FACS, FASMBS
I attended the information seminar given by the hospital, and Dr. Voellinger was a participant in that. I thought he seemed very knowledgeable as well as nice.rnrnI had my initial consult with him on June 20th. Had to wait quite a while, but not too bad. First I saw the nurse who took height, weight, blood pressure, things like that. Then I saw the PA who went over my medical history with me. Then I met Dr. Voellinger, and he was very thorough in his explanations, and answered all my questions. Then they have you meet with one of the nurses who has had WLS herself, to talk about some of the life changes that will be happening. Last, I met with the patient coordinator who gathers up all the information that is needed and submits it to the insurance company.rnrnI have called and emailed several times since then with questions, and they have been good at response time.

My Story

I have been researching WLS for about 2 years now, and the only reason I didn't do anything about it before, was I got sick and had to have a hysterectomy. It then took a while before I even wanted to think about having more surgery!

I have completed my:

visit to my PCP
bloodwork
initial consult with the surgeon
nutritionist visit
psych evaluation
exercise fitness test
H. Pylori breath test
upper GI
CT scan of abdomen and pelvis (because of prior abdominal surgeries and currently have 2 hernias)
probably a few more things I've forgotten!

8/18/06: My paperwork has been submitted to the insurance company today!!! Hoping and praying for the best.

After waiting a week and a half, I called the insurance company and they claimed not to have received my paperwork. I called Kim at Dr. Voellinger's office, and she re-faxed it right away and then followed up to make sure it was received.

I was approved within about 3 or 4 days! Kim said my case had to have a final sign off by the Doctor. A few days after that I got a call saying that I had to have a final psych consult, because I had (and have ) a history of depression.

Jennifer Sawyer was nice enough to meet with me on a Sunday, so I got the consult out of the way. A few days later, I had my final approval and then was just waiting on a date.

Within a few days, Dawn, the new nurse in the office called with my switch date! I will be having an open DS on Monday, October 30th.

It's going to be hard waiting another month, but I am so excited, and work is so busy, that I'm sure it'll fly by.

Haven't updated in quite a while.  I started my 2 week liquid diet on Monday the 16th.  It's been hard!  But I know I can do it! (keep telling myself that, keep telling myself that....)

Had my pre-op appointment with Dr. V on the 17th, and I go to the hospital for the pre-op testing there this coming Monday, the 23rd.

Went down to Presbyterian yesterday for the hospital pre-op visit.  Only had to have blood drawn, blood pressure check and talk to the anest.  Everything else like chest xray and EKG was already done and was recent enough for them.

Everyone at the hospital was super-friendly and as helpful as they could be.

Now I've got everything done except for a TON of work and personal related things on my to-do list!  I'm getting excited and a little nervous.  I'm going to try to take a lot of "before" pictures this weekend so I'll have them to look back on.
