Surgeon Testimonial

J.K. Champion M.D. F.A.C.S
My husband and I met with Dr. Champion on Nov. 4th, before I had a surgery date but after I'd been approved.
We were both impressed with his straight forward, attentive and informative approach. He has a dry sense of humor, too.
That visit included watching an educational video & taking a quiz after [!].
Both his printed info packet, presentation, and in person meeting emphasized that this was a serious and life-changing step. The risks have been, literally, spelled out in the packet of info.
During the monthly support group meetings he has attended, there have been persons who have provoked Dr. C to some pretty no-nonsense responses about trying to "get around" the dietary demands of post-op; but that brusqueness comes from wanting to see all of us succeed and being frustrated with persons who appear to be sabbotaging themselves.
The office staff is all female and kind, considerate and helpful with info.
Mind you, I'd been attending his monthly Pre-Op support group since September p- it's free and (apparently) open to anyone even considering surgery.
Then I started attending the online chatgroup and seeing their before & after photos and learning all the helpful tips on preparing for and succeeding after surgery.
Total care is what this doc's office provides.
It is nonesenscialto ask, "Which is better, surgical competence, bedside manner, or both?" Without the competence we'd be dead!
Without kindness and consideration the likelihood of stress-induced complications is a real risk, I believe. Both are required.

My surgery date is Feb. 13th at 9am in Atlanta. My husband and I are so happy & excited about our new life together.

UNTIL IT BECOMES REAL...
on February 25, 2011 8:07 am
30 years ago, when I was in plus sizes, our babysitter/surogate grandma gave me a refrigerator magnet that showed a jubilant blue pig in jig posture with this message on its tummy:

"NOTHING TASTES AS GOOD AS THIN FEELS!"

I dutifully put it on my refrigerator; but it had no effect on whether or not I stuck to whatever current diet I was on.

Flash forward to 3 years post-op: one day, as I was opening the frig I read the pig's message & thought,
"IT'S TRUE!"
It was true because now I knew in my physical being what being "thin"
[I substitute, "healthy"] feels like.

How about you?
Are you saying affirmations & clipping out magazine pictures to inspire you to stay in weight loss mode?
Ask yourself, do I really KNOW in my physical being what those affirmations & pics would feel like if they were my reality right now?
If the honest answer is, "Nope!" It's past-time you learned some new skills that WORK!

Email me for the particulars on how my EMBODY SUCCESS! coaching method WORKS!

PS I made this sculpture last year to celebrate the birth of my healthy body out of the willing sacrifice of my morbidly obese body!

I made this to celebrate the new body birthed from pre-op body!

8 YEARS LATER &
on February 14, 2011 12:56 pm
... I'm still in size 8Long jeans, haven't yo-yo'd, still pumping iron with my trainer 2x weekly for 1 hr each session!
I began teaching other post-ops my EMBODY SUCCESS method after they panic'd at how much weight they were regaining after 2+ years. Some were already scheduling surgical revisions!

Have Grand-twins, will travel!
on March 29, 2010 12:58 am
Every time I have to fly, it reinforces the permanence of finally feeling totally "at home" in my body - which is now strong, healthy and a normal size for my frame. Flying to and from NYC to spend time as a brand new Nana, both trips I shared my row with others who were normal-sized. That meant none of us felt squeezed or infringed upon; none of us had challenges getting out into the aisle to use the lavatory.
To be normal-sized is a purely physics-driven description: each human skeleton has a maximum weight-bearing load before it will begin showing permanent stress markers  - rheumatroid arthritis in the knees, bulging discs collapsing in the lower back.
Normal-sized has NOTHING to do with being fashionable and everything to do with being healthy & strong.
I spent 4 days holding 12+ lbs. of newborn twins and my arms didn't get tired. I could well appreciate their mother's sense of euphoria at not having to carry them around in utero as they moved about, stretching their long legs and arms, kicking & punching the walls around them...

When I go back, I'll probably be holding16 lbs. worth of newborn twins. Time to pump it up!!

My Story

Mon., Oct. 29, 2007 - Coming up on my 5th anniversary in a few months  &
still "at home" in my size 8-10 body;
still enjoying feeling strong & fit, working out at the gym & cardio biking or walking!
Still enjoying the freedom FROM dieting and fearing food.
If I could figure out a way to import new photos to this new Profile platform I would.
If you want to see more recent photos, you'll have to go to my own blog:

Sat., May 6, 2007:

OHYMGOD!

What happened to all the years of posts I had on my profile????

OK, the short version is:

I'm 5'9+"; immediate pre-op weight was 280lbs. = 3x clothes;

at 11 weeks post-op an endoscopy showed that my stoma had scarred almost closed & it was stretched back to original post-op pencil-eraser-size so I could keep food down!

at 12 month post-op exam I was 175lbs. = size 12;

at 24 mo. post-op exam I was 155 lbs. = size 10-8;

at 36 mo. post-op exam I was 154 lbs. = size 8;

at 48 mo. post-op exam I was 157 lbs. = size 8.

Began weight-lifting training with prof. trainer at LA Fitness in Roswell 4 weeks post-op (after getting OK at 3weeks post op exam) - 3 X weekly. continue 2-3x weekly; + cardio 4-5 x weekly, + walking my greyhound, Rhonda, 3-4x DAILY!

My headshot was taken 18 mos. post-op.

Changed my vocation from parish minister to life coach at 2yrs. post op!!

Had brachioplasty & lower facelift at 25.5 mos. post-op.
