Surgeon Testimonial

Karl LeBlanc
Dr. LeBlanc is a wonderful surgeon. When my husband and I went to see him to discuss the options of different kinds of WLS he was very informative. This was my first time meeting him so I didn't know what to expect. I decided on the sleeve gastrectomy, which is the surgery that I felt was right for me. He talked to my husband and I about the surgery and what to expect after the surgery. He discussed the risks of surgery very thoroughly and was always confident --being forthcoming of his credentials and the weight loss surgeries that he has performed. The office staff was sooo nice and sooo professional. I was told when I first thought about having the surgery that I should talk to \"Amy\" when I call and I can sure see why. She is so nice, so smart, so courteous, so knowledgeable about weight loss surgery, and she is very professional. In addition to Dr. LeBlanc, I know I have someone to call on if I am having a problem. I was then introduced to the bariatric coordinator, Auban, who does a wonderful job of coordinating all appts., etc. You can tell that she genuinely cares - even coming to the hospital after surgery to check on me-- and I know she's always available if I need her---she's great! They provide a very structured aftercare program. Dr. LeBlanc takes pride in his work and it shows. On a scale of one to 10 I rate Dr. LeBlanc and his staff a BIG 10.

ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY (November 12th)
110 LBS. AND 69.875 INCHES GONE!!

This past year has been the best year of my life . . I can't believe it's been a year already since my surgery and it is a good time to reflect on the gifts that this journey has brought me.  There's a lot for which to be thankful -- so where do I start??? I am thankful for a wonderful husband, who has supported me from day one.  He has always been there for me and is very proud of my accomplishment of losing 110 lbs. and 69.875 inches since surgery.  The support of my family and friends was vital to the success of my weight loss, and without everyone's help I know I would not be where I am today on this wonderful weight loss journey . .  .  . as I continue on my weight loss journey I no longer have to deal with constant foot and leg pain, I have more energy than I've had in years, and I have confidence in myself and a great feeling of accomplishment.  I enjoy exercising (did I say that?); especially walking and riding my bicycle --- and let's not forget about dancing!!! I love to dance and have been able to enjoy dancing now more than ever.  I'm also thankful for the many new friends that I've made through OH and the support group meetings that I faithfully attend -- both those that have had WLS and those that are contemplating WLS --- Just as I appreciate my friends for helping me through my journey, I'm now able to provide support and hope to others.

OH HAPPY DAY!!! OH HAPPY DAY!!!

"Life is not a problem to be solved, but a gift to be enjoyed"

It's June 30th and today is a great day for me.  Not only have I now lost 90 lbs. since surgery I finally reached 199 lbs (out of the 200s for good!) . . . oh happy day!!!  The last few months I've had a slow, but steady weight loss.  In April, 2008 I lost 12.5 lbs., then the weight loss started to be very slow.  In May I lost only 5 lbs. and then June came along and it was 1 lb. a week for 4 weeks and then "BAM" -- 5 lbs. this week (for a total of 9 lbs. in June) . . I started an exercise regimen, which I love and try very hard to stick to it . . . the inches are definitely coming off as well as the weight.  I am able to do so much more since losing the 90 lbs . . . luv to dance and at my nephew's recent wedding I "danced the night away" . . except for the blisters on the feet for trying to show off with the cute shoes with heels, I danced like never before. . . AND WORE A DRESS FOR THE FIRST TIME IN ALMOST 15 YEARS!!!! WOW!!!  This has surely been a wonderful change in my life and having the surgery was the best thing that I have ever done for myself . . . I want to shout to the world about my success --- but will settle for shouting to my OH friends --- which mean the world to me --- thanks for all the support from everyone!!!

7 months post op

JUNE 16TH . . .SEVEN MONTHS POST-OP
Hi everyone --- well, it's been 7 months since I got my wonderful "sleeve" and everything is going great!  I'm losing slowly now, but I'm trying not to get too discouraged as I am still continuing to lose weight--- but I know I'm losing inches.  I started exercising regularly --- since surgery my main exercise has been walking, but now I have joined Contours Express and I love it and look forward to going.  I try to go 3 days a week, but with my busy schedule of going to our camp I don't always get to "fit it in" . . but I am committed to this exercise. . . oh, and I ate boiled crabs for the first time yesterday and although I was only able to eat a couple crabs, they were delicious and I had no problem with them . . can't wait to get more!!!! lol . . . .I love buying and getting new (and much improved) clothes and energy level is still way up!  Take care . . FAYE

MAY, 2008

I have been reading everyone else's stories and comments and just haven't taken the time to update mine.  So here goes . . the last time I posted was when I was 3 months post-op . . my how time flies because it has now been 6 months since I had my wonderful "sleeve" . . I have lost 80 lbs. and lots of inches and very, very happy about that.    I'm enjoying wearing nice clothes and am no longer in plus sizes . . .I have lots of energy (most of the time!) and it is amazing how much more I can do now that I have that 80 lbs. GONE . . I recently went to a church fair and danced for hours and hours --- I luv to dance!!!    I am trying to do more exercise --- "kickin' it up a notch" so to speak  . . . . I'm doing lots better with the eating --- chewing more, eating slower, etc. and have not gotten sick from that in a couple months.  (ok, so I'm a slower learner! lol) . . . I am very faithful with my protein and it is amazing that I haven't lost gobs of hair like everyone talks about . . just a couple weeks ago I started seeing strands of hair in my brush, but not a lot . . . maybe I will be one of the lucky ones and escape the hair loss???   I am having some issues with nausea and recently went to my surgeon for my 6 month check-up and he ordered an ultrasound of my gallbladder --- well, it's a bummer . .  -- I have gallstones and the surgeon says I have to have my gallbladder removed -- I told him I'm too busy for that -- he laughed and we discussed lots of stuff -- he is a wonderful surgeon and takes soooo much time to answer all questions . . . .I have a return appt. with him at the end of June and we'll see what the next step is! .. .(he says it's not going away and that the gallbladder has to be removed) . . . So my 6 month journey since my surgery has been a great success for me --- I'm enjoying life now more than I ever have --- no leg pains and hardly any feet pain - able to walk long distances and my husband and I bought bikes and enjoy riding bike!   . . . so that's my story and I'm stickin' to it!  . . . LIFE IS GOOD!    Take care . . FAYE

What a difference 3 months makes!
on February 29, 2008 7:41 pm
OK, WHERE DO I START?  It's been awhile since I've posted, so I'm going to start with the good . . oh my goodness!!!  I'm three months post op and I've lost 54 1/2 lbs. and 20 1/2 inches . . WOW!!!!  I've got sooooooo much energy sometime I have to stop myself --- my legs no longer hurt AT ALL (that's a miracle) and my feet don't hurt half as bad as they used to . . . It's unbelievable how I can walk so far with little or no trouble -- at Mardi Gras I walked 50 blocks back and forth to see a parade --- last year I would have had to catch a taxi! HA!HA! . . today I worked in the flower bed and cleaned the patio and patio furniture for about 6 hours --- with a few breaks in between to drink protein! HA!HA! . . .  I saw my Endocrinologist a month ago and my test results were awesome --- he compared them to the last time I saw him, which was right before surgery --- my cholesterol went from 189 to 158 this time -- he decreased my Thyroid medicine, which he said is normal after weight loss surgery --- and all the "numbers" look good (hormones are even where they need to be - imagine that!!!) ---- I'm enjoying wearing jeans again and have gone down in blouse size from 24 (or a 3X) to a size 18 now . . .I saw Doc LeBlanc (surgeon) on February 20th and he said I'm right on track . . .Now for the bad --- I am still having a problem with the chew, chew, chew thing and also in eating slowly -- still getting sick (usually vomitting) and this has happened at least 8 times.  I'm working on that and hope to conquer this problem soon.  But the good outweighs the bad and I am sooooooooo happy that I had the sleeve --- it's all uphill now and I feel on top of the world - FAYE

My Story

I have been procrastinating on entering my story because I just didn't know where to start . . so here goes . .  I'm 57 years old and have been overweight for a long time.  When I look back at my pictures from elementary school, I was overweight--- but no one ever told me! lol . . . . so let's start from high school.  I was always overweight in high school and when I graduated I weighed 200 lbs.    As the years went on I continued to gain weight.  By age 31 I had reached 268 lbs. I decided it was time to get the weight off.  Well, as we all know, through the years we try so many diets- some successful and some not so successful.  But I was determined this time and at 34 years old I had lost 105 lbs. and was happy, happy about that.  Well, that weight loss was great, but through the years I went back to my old eating habits and I gained all of that weight back (and more).  I continued to battle with being overweight and about 5 months ago met up with an ole' (as opposed to old) friend who had just had the vertical sleeve gastrectomy.  She told me all about it and I just said to her "that's great, I'm glad for you, but I'm not interested."  I then joined another weight loss center, paying lots of money and getting little results.  I started to do research on weight loss surgery.  I researched every type of weight loss surgery.  After a great deal of research and talking to people that had weight loss surgery, I made my choice to have the VSG.

I contacted the surgeon on September 3, 2007 and was given an appointment for September 19, 2007.   My husband and I went for the appt. with the surgeon and I was convinced then that the VSG was the right thing for me to do.  I scheduled the surgery for November 12, 2007. . . WOW!  The date had been set!!!

Things just moved fast after that.  I was sent to a nutritionist , psych. evaluation  , barium swallow , and had my blood work done  .  When I met with the endocrinologist after the blood work he said I had a B12 deficiency and sent me to see a Hematologist/Oncologist.  Well, that was enough to scare the heck out of me.    After a B12 injection and more blood work, I was cleared and he said that I just had a "little low B12" and nothing to worry about and that would not stop me from having the surgery. . .   so on October 31, 2007 I met with the surgeon again for the pre-op consultation.  It was becoming a reality that I was actually going to have the surgery.  At that point I decided to share the good news with my family, who have been very supportive --- as I told them "I'm not asking for your permission (because I've already made up my mind to have the surgery), I'm just asking for your support".  My husband has been super supportive.    He knows this is the best thing for me.  Later, I started telling my friends that I was having the surgery.  At first I was undecided whether I was going to share this news with my friends, but I was soooooooooo excited I wanted to shout it to the world!!!

So here I am two weeks after surgery.  I must say it was not an easy road (ask my husband -- he was with me 24/7 for a week after surgery - he was glad to go back to work, I'm sure!) . . . for about 4 days after surgery  I suffered with gas, heartburn (which I've never had and had no idea what that felt like), nausea (very, very bad), and even diarrhea.  The surgeon had explained to me prior to surgery that I would have all of this, but I had no idea it would be that bad!!!!      But after taking Prilosec OTC, Mylicon drops, and Phenergan, after 4 days I was starting to feel human again . . . . I no longer take the Mylicon drops or the Phenergan and only have 1 day left to take the Prilosec . . .  As I told the surgeon yesterday "I didn't like you the day of surgery, and I didn't like you 4 days after surgery, but I sure like you now".

So . . . . I had surgery 2 weeks ago --- I've lost 17 lbs. and my BMI has gone from 48.1 to 43.1. . I'm looking forward to getting this weight off and being healthier!!!  I know that this involves a lot of lifestyle changes, but I have made that commitment.  Thanks to everyone who continues to support me through this journey.
