Surgeon Testimonial

William Johnson
GREAT young Dr. that is a pleaseure to talk to and he kept it real at all times. I appreciated the fact that he didn't sugar coat anything when speaking with me. I've only met him once so far, but first impression are what matters the most. The office staff is very pleasant and helpful. If you are considering Dr. Johnson and his staff know that they are very detailed oriented and will make sure all the I's are dotted and the T's are crossed before submitting to your insurance. The y stress that you attend support group meetings before and after surgery.

Will update later about his surgical competence & bedside manner.

Exercise & Eating Right
on October 20, 2008 10:09 am
Since my last post I have been going strong at the gym.  It is almost like I just do not feel right if I miss a day, who would have ever thought.   I am doing things in the gym I thought I was not capable of doing. When  I first started going I stuck with the treadmill, this is because I had came to the conclusion that the elliptical was just to challenging for me.  After about a week and 1/2 in I finally had the courage to try the elliptical again and to my surprise I surpassed my 2 minutes that would have normally made me feel like I was close to death.  To my surprise I had completed a whole 8 minutes and could have kept going.  To make a long story short I am up to 45 minutes on the elliptical and usually try to do 15 minutes of weights. I'm so pumped and excited about this feeling and rush I get just from exercise.

Along with the exercise  have been following Weight Watchers again and I have lost a total of 7-8 pounds. I feel really good and I have more energy to do things than I have had in the past year or so.  I wanted to share my accomplishments with you my OH Family.

Almost done with month 2 of the weight management program.  Time is really flying by.

WEIGHT MANAGEMENT PROGRAM Mo. 2
on October 1, 2008 11:19 am

Hello OH Fam, well since my last post I have met a really good friend whom lives rather close to me she goes by the user Gods_destiny.  We have been working out like crazy together for the past three weeks and we keep one another focused on obtaining our goals.

I have officially finished the 1st month of the weight management program and my next appointment is on 10/7 with my PCP and more than likely I will go to the dietician the following day (I don't need an appointment to go there, all I have to do is hand in my journal and weigh in and she will do the rest).  I wish he was as considerate as the dietician and wave his fee like she did, but I will count my blessings. A blessing is a blessing and I do recognize, when one has been sent my way.

This past month has been a real battle.  The scale keeps moving up and down between 310 and 304.  I so want to be out of the 300's but I can say I haven't been that focused on the eating right part.

I picked back up smoking when they denied me but I'm aware that I will have to stop again, and I will just like I did the last time (COLD TURKEY). I was really sad when I was denied I felt as though I had fell in a hole in the road.  But I quickly picked myself up and start making my appointments to get the ball rolling again.

YEA!!!!!!! MONTH 2 IS HERE ALREADY AND I FEEL AS THOUGH THE TIME WENT BY RATHER FAST.  My six months will be over before I know it.

WEIGHT MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
on September 2, 2008 7:38 am
Today I started my weight management program.  I saw my PCP and made sure to tell him not to miss nothing in my file this time around.  I want to make sure we documented every thing correctly so there is no DENIED this time around. If you guys have any suggestions of what I should be sure to have him include in his notes that would be really helpful.

I rejoined WW this weekend and my starting weight was at 307.  I have gained two pounds since joining OH.  But I will stay focused and determined to loose those come this Saturday's weigh in.  I also have to meet with my dietician tomorrow.

I really hope we are getting everything correct this time around. So wish me luck OH family and I will keep you posted with my progress

WEIGHT MANAGEMENT PROGRAM
on August 14, 2008 10:51 am
I have scheduled my first appointment to get the weight management program started so I can knock out these six months by Jan./Feb/ 09. Will let you guys know how things are going keep me in your prayers because this is one sista that don't have much patience for having to start all over when I was just soooo close.

My first appointment is scheduled Sept. 2, 2008. My PCP better get every detail right in my medical file this time around (weight, diet & exercise notes) and don't be waisting my time if he's not going to be detailed as required by the insurance co.

Continue to pray for me as I will for you.

DENIED!!!!!!!
on August 14, 2008 10:27 am
I was informed yesterday that I was DENIED!!!!! for the following reason:

After reviewing the notations documented by the medical director, it appears the pre-determination was denied  because medical necessity for bariatric surgery has not been established due to:

- complete documentation of a 6-month physician-supervised weight management program in the past 2 years without significant gaps as delineated above has not been received

- complete documentation of a 6-month physician-supervised weight management program in the past 5 years without significant gaps as delineated above for long-standing morbid obesity has not been received

- programs such as Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, and Optifast are acceptable alternatives only if done in conjunction with physician supervision and detailed documentation of participation is available for review

- physician-supervised programs consisting exclusively of pharmacological management do not meet this requirement of a physician-supervised weight management program.

Now here's a paragraph from Cigna's guidelines:

for individuals with long-standing, morbid obesity, participation in a
program within the last five years is sufficient if resonable attendance in the weight management program over an extended period of time of at least six months can be demostrated.

I GAVE THEM 1 & 1/2 YEARS OF WEIGHT WATCHERS INFORMATION FROM WHEN I ATTEND THE MEETINGS (Weekly weigh-in's etc.) AND MY MEDICAL FILE NOTED MY PARTICIPATION IN THE PROGRAM IN BOTH 2005 & 2006.

So they are telling me because I did not go to the Dr. for six consecutive months they have denied me, this is some BULL$%@#!!!!!!!!

Well I guess my journey begins all over.  I just hate that I may have to take that Upper GI test again.  That's the worst thing I have ever been through in my life. I will keep you posted on my progress.

My Story

I'm a 34 year old single mother of one beautiful teenage daughter. My heaviest weight has been 331.  I joined Weight Watchers back in 2006 and got down to 286, boy did that feel good.  Wasn't having acid reflux and my knees didn't hurt that was the best feeling ever. Well as time progressed so did the weight. I gained all but 26 lbs back. This last year the scale stays between 313 & 305.  With that being said I had been researching both the Lap-band & the Gastric by-pass. I didn't want surgery to be my first option, that's why I tried WW and still follow it to this day.  I continue to use the tools I learned at WW but it just isn't the same.  I need some help.  I know portion controls and how to eat healthy but when you want to cheat and really cheat you can still do that on WW. After a few years of researching WLS I've decided to start the process for the Lap Band. Wish me luck.  Will keep you updated. ~SMOOCHES~
