Surgeon Testimonial

Robert Read, M.D.
Dr. Read was a very kind, informative surgeon who made sure I could explain the surgery back to him including risks. The bariatric program at Good Samaritan in Corvallis is very comprehensive with a good staff. Everyone has been wonderful. They take a very conservative approach compared to what I've been hearing, but I believe that it is the way to achieve the best results.

It ain't easy!
on October 24, 2010 9:35 pm
My, my....it has been awhile.  I see none of my old profile survived and that is a shame because there were some things I had written in there I wish I could go back and read again.  I'll have to rewrite my story as the scale killer....

I am just shy of 6 years post op and what I know is this:  it ain't easy.  Within this last year my weight which has been stable has started to climb.  I eat about the same day in and day out so the only thing I can attribute this to is the fact I am back working and sitting nearly 10 hrs or more per day.  LACK OF EXERCISE.  It is all a balancing act and right now one wheel has come loose and I am wobbling.

So I will return here to share if I am successful at losing the 23 lbs I have gained.  Will I be successful at building muscle which weighs more than fat, but uses far more energy to sustain itself?  Will I reach my goal of walking the 60 miles in 3 days for the Komen Walk for the cure?  Well stay tuned and we'll see.

What is it like to be 3 1/2 years post op?
on July 1, 2008 11:42 am
Here I am nearly at the end of a long journey that really has no end for these are lifetime changes that I will live with daily for the rest of my life.  I've had 2 rounds of reconstructive plastic surgery and will have the last one on 7/15/08.  It will be the most difficult one so far, but it is the LAST one and I am ready to move into new areas of my life.

Currently I am not employed and that is ok.  It is giving me an opportunity to be quiet and listen to the voice within for guidance as to what is best for the rest of my life.  How many are fortunate enough to be able to do that?  Not many and I am blessed.

So what is it like to be this far out from surgery?  It is a feeling of control.  It is knowing that because I've made lifestyle changes and done some MAJOR head work I will always be successful--in whatever I attempt to do.  It is confidence in myself and love of who I've become both inside and out.  I like this woman who stares back at me from the mirror.

I am 5 days post op and feeling wonderful. Dr Robert Read @ Good Samaritan Corvallis performed the rouex en y via lap and I responded so successfully I was able to leave the hospital after only 33 hours. Off pain meds completely at 60 hours and I'm not looking back! The Bariatric program at Good Sam is a good one with lots of follow up.

I would like suggestions to get over my head hunger though...

I'm now eating protein foods, but I'm feeling weak later in the day. Not sure why because I am getting plenty of sleep per night.

Welcome to my journey!

I am a 50 year old female who has been overweight all my life (except for 15 minutes in 7th grade when I grew 4 inches in 6 months). I am morbidly obese at 317lbs and suffer from type 2 diabetes which is controlled through diet alone and I am hypothyroid taking 175 mcg of levoxyl. My triglcerides are high, my colesterol is high, and I get short of breath walking up stairs. I have been on every diet ever devised, tried every exercise program available and even tried Meridia and other weight loss drugs.

I give up. I don't eat much as it is. I'm not even sure this would work for me. I just don't know what else to do.

The quality of my life is compromised by restrictions weight places on it. I want my health and I want to live.
I don't know if insurance would pay for this or not.

At this point I am investigating programs and gathering information.
