Step one
on March 5, 2013 2:36 pm

Well I finally convinced my family physician to refer me to the Centre of Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery at the Vic. My previous attempts at asking  him for professional help, he didn't think that I was "big enough"! But I told him that I my BMI is 44! Looking forward to hearing from them!

Thanks to ma Tante Diane for telling me about this...

Hello. I am just learning about OH and all the "tools" that are out there! I am also trying to convince my younger sister to go on this journey with me as her BMI is higher than mine and she is a single mom, so she needs the support more! My lil sis and I were planning on attending the WLS Meet and Greet last Thursday but she had just been released from the hospital the previous night from a bout of pneumonia and my first ever tattoo took too long (and sadly I had booked and paid a deposit on the tattoo long before I knew about the M&G). I will be going to see my family physician this week and trying to "convince" him to lead me the in the right direction. I have asked him before a few times as my previous gym memberships and diets have not worked. He said that I "don't need help". But my BMI is 43.4 as I am 5'6" and 275lbs. My knees and feet kill me at work. But worst of all I don't have the stamina for my two young children and/or my energetic wife! I have joined the gym again with the hopes that I can lose weight combined with eating healthier but if I fail like the previous attempts I am hoping that I can be put on a list for an opportunity to have a life-saving surgery!

My Story

I have battled with my weight since junior high. I was overweight in elementary but I was not concerned then. I have been as low as 165 lbs in my adult years but now I am at my highest weight ever of 280 at 34 years old! I have tried fitness clubs numerous times and several diets. I lost weight just before my marriage to my lovely and supportive wife but I have since gained that weight plus more. While my job is moderately physical I find that I am having a hard time and having to work slower than I would like to. My wife and I have 2 boys, the oldest one is 30months old and he is a cancer survivor of Retinoblastoma (he had to have his right eye removed on April 29,2012 at 18months to save his life!). Our youngest one is now 9 months old.  I NEVER want my kids to have to deal with the humiliation of one of their mom's being obese! I also want to get pregnant and have been told by the fertility clinic that I must lose weight.  I hope to have surgery as a tool to not only save my life but so I can enjoy every moment in a healthy and productive way!
