My weight loss journy~This is my story
on October 15, 2008 6:47 pm
Hello everyone, my name is Kelly, I'm 45 years old. I have two wonderful children my son is 25 and lives in Whistler where he owns his own company, my daughter is 23 and still lives with me, she is in her last year of nursing school, and just informed me that she will be moving out soon. So that means I'll be all alone..
I moved to BC 14 years ago, so all my family lives back in NS.
I have been booked and ready to go into surgery 2 times but backed out! ( what the heck was I thinking)
But I am more determind than ever to have WLS, it's my time now and i know it!
My weight is 263 and height is 5'1" I think that puts my BMI at around 49 something.
I have been over weight for over10 years, mostly due to bad eating habits and little or no exercise! I'm a nurse and work night shift, So the most exercise I get is rolling over in bed..lol really sad isn't it.
I just found out about 3 months ago that I am type 2 diabetic, I take metformin for this. I also take medications for high blood pressure, as well for high cholesterol, and puffers for shortness of breath and something new, pills for severe heartburn( I'm gong for a test to check out my gull bladder)
My weight has become a severe physical limitation for me, I miss so much time from work because of the severe pain and mobilities. I hurt my back a few years ago at work, and I still have severe lower back pain now from it.
I have even lost friends because of my weight, they just don't seem to understand why i don't like going out!
It's kinda funny(not really) but when I walk by a mirror I don't even recognize myself, i really don't! Sometimes I just stand there naked and stare at myself I just can't believe this body belongs to me!
I joined obesity help form, and I have to say it has really helped me have hope again, and everyone have been so wonderful with me, when i have questions someone always replies back most time right away with helpful information.
I am seeking OFC approval as the weight list here in BC is just far to long., and with all my medical conduction's I need my health to in prove and to have a life again. I have an appointment to see Dr. Tang in Victoria on Oct 21 my first, not sure what to except!
I did get my chest x-ray he has requested. I have also done my over night o2 test, at times my GP said that my oxygen stats dropped to below 82%, at times..
I had my appointment today with the dietitian that went rather well I thought. I also have an appointment with a cardiologist, as well with psychologist.
And this is just the start of my pre-post testing..
I also have an appointment with Dr. Meneghetti in a couple of weeks, I need him to sign my OFC form.
I have contacted Dr. Hunter@ Virginia Mason hospital in Seattle, This is where i would like to have my WLS done.
My list of Co Morbidity's are
Sleep apnea
Kidney damage
Type 2 diabetes
Liver problems
High blood pressure
Waist circ is 49
High cholesterol
Shortness of breath
Urinary incontinence
taking a shower is very difficult
I don't fit in a regular size bathtub
Bone and joint damage from stress and arthritis
My BMI is 49 something
Severe  heartburn
It's hard to put my socks and shoes on.
I have decreased exercise tolerance.
Varicose veins.
Leg and ankle swelling.
Rashes, excess sweating.
Depression, anxiety, lack of self esteem and social rejection.
Inappropriate coping strategies.
I have tried every diet out there including weight loss medications.
I have decreased quality of life, health discrimination and  vital exhaustion.
I have done so much research on WLS, I also understand and I'm fully awear of all the risks that come along with this type of surgery.
I am excited to start my new journey of a life time.
As I go along I will be posting more blogs, I would like to be an inspriation to someone and to help in any way that I can to  others to help over come their fears and struggles with WLS. For those like I was that are perhaps feeling alone or might be afraid to ask those dreaded embarrassing questions !
This is not going to be an easy journey, you have to be 110% devoted to succeed.
But don't forget Rome wasn't build in a day!

My Story

Hi Kelly,
>
> Unfortunately, I cannot write a letter on behalf of our program. Our mandate as the Provincial Specialized Eating Disorders Program is to assess and treat people who stuggle with severe anorexia nervosa and/or bulimia nervosa. Our program does not offer treatment for binge eating disorder, complusive overeating, or for obesity as we do not have the resources for this. For our of country treatment for any of these, your doctor would be required to write on your behalf. MSP may have directed you to follow this procedure of contacting our program if you have indicated you want treatment for an eating disorder. You and your doctor will be required to be very specific of the nature of your eating disorder and the type of treatment you are seeking. I wish you the best of luck in your endeavour. It sounds as though you have made many steps to improve your life and that you are motivated to make change for yourself.
