Surgeon Testimonial

Lana Nelson, D.O.
Dr. Nelson is an excellent surgeon, professional, and very kind. My positive impression of her has only increased as I have gone through my surgery and am now in post op follow-up. She was up front, honest, very knowledgeable and caring. Pre-op teaching, after care and patient follow-up were strongly emphasized and are carried out in an organized and personalized manner. All the risks of surgery were explained both in oral and written fashion. I had absolutely no qualms about having Dr. Nelson do my surgery. I am so happy with my choice of surgeon and I can highly recommend her to anyone. She is associated with a Bariatric Center of Excellence and it certainly was apparent. I would rate Dr. Nelson an A+ for her surgical skill, bedside manner, and professionalism.

Hi! I had my VSG done on 4-29-08. My surgeon did an excellent job and my post op recovery has been great! I'm on the loser's bench now and the journey to health has begun! : )

Brief Update!
on June 23, 2008 2:20 pm

I'm almost 8 weeks post op. I'm down 26 pounds! I'm exactly at 200 lbs., so Onederland should be in my very near future! :)

I'm eating healthy, making good choices, and becoming an exercise devotee. My main activities are biking outdoors, exercise dvd's, light weight training with multiple repetitions, treadmilling and using our eliptical.

I've been able to stop all my blood pressure meds that I had been on for years for a severe hypertension problem. 3 & 1/2 weeks post op I was BP medication free with the approval of my physicians.

I've also come to realize that age definitely slows our body's metabolic rate ... so exercise is now more important than ever. I'm instructed to consume at least 850 - 1000 calories per day to prevent slowing my metabolism and to keep it fueled. Even 1200 calories per day is good.

Also, making healthy food choices ... lean meats, healthy vegetables and fruits, and whole grains are encouraged. I'm staying away from nutrient deficient white flour, rice, pasta, white bread and sugar.

I'm not in a race to lose weight. I'm losing in a healthy manner that benefits my health! I will get to my goal and want to be healthy when I get there. My surgeon, dietician, and Dr. Oz's book *You On A Diet* are my guides.

Best Wishes to You,

Shelly

My Story

My weight loss journey isn't about vanity or looking like a model. My weight loss focus is on health. After years of having systemic lupus erythematosus and numerous courses of corticosteroids and other anti-inflammatories, my weight has continued to climb. I've lost weight more times than I can count, only to gain it back with more at the next round of steroid treatment. My blood pressure has been an ongoing issue that has become a serious problem. My cholesterol and triglycerides are also dangerously elevated. Some of this is due to steroids and other DMARDs used to treat my lupus, but much is also due to loss of motivation and poor diet and inactivity due to feeling bad or depressed. Then, there's been the continuously looming depression that goes along with all the above.

Well, I had finally had enough. I went to Oklahoma Weight Loss Options seminar and met Dr. Nelson and I knew this new tool would help me regain my health. Thank You Dr. Nelson!

I've had incredible support from my wonderful husband of almost 29 years, Kim, and our grown children, Zach and Amanda.

I've also had great support from my PCP, Dr. Edge, and my rheumatologist, Dr. McArthur.

I'm so very thankful for this chance and for all the support around me as I work toward getting much healthier and hopefully dropping many of my medicines when my physicians say it's OK and my condition has improved.
