Surgeon TestimonialPatrick Coates, M.D.Dr. Coates is pretty straight to the point, has been doing WLS for many years now. I met him about 6 years ago when I did a consult for WLS, that had to be put on hold because my mother had terminal cancer. At that time, I was impressed with his knowledge and effort he put in to reviewing my health history and eating habits to find out if the surgery would be the best thing for me.
I've seen him several times during my 3 days hospital stay for RNY. He visited with me shortly before surgery, and then twice after. On the day of my discharge he actually came and climbed up on my bed (while I was packing) and sat and talked with me for about 10 minutes about what I should and shouldn't be doing when I get home.
His staff is wonderful. If they can't assist you right when you call, they get back to you promptly. Most of your aftercare is handled by the PAs, who are extremely capable, as Dr. Coates is doing surgeries. You are reminded, advised, and encouraged to attend the monthly WLS support group held by Sutter/Memorial, and Dr. Coirin, Dr. Coates partner, comes and answers medically related issues/questions there.
Oh, and Dr. Coates is shy. He's quick to smile, but you won't hear much out of him until he's been around you a little bit.

After years of infertility and more advances in treating Polycystic Ovary, last year my OB/GYN and PCP finally admitted that I needed some type of serious "tool" to help get the weight off, if I ever hoped to conceive. This is why I chose to have WLS, after debating for 5 years. That and a long family history of diabetes, heart problems and early deaths.
Add in the support of my wonderful husband, Ray. He's never said I'm overweight, or that I should lose weight. He's always made me feel I was perfect the way I was.
18 Months on August 14, 2008 6:32 pm
Went in for my 18 month check in. Late in the afternoon, and drank tons of water that day, so weighed in at 156 *shrugs* Labs all look good, and I'm on maintenance since we're working on getting pregnant.
Do not get me started on the nightmares of hormones and infertility! I fit in size 12's, and am comfortable and happy. Still glower at the batwings in the mirror, but live with them.
All in all, I'd do it ALL again in a heartbeat.

7 Months Post-Op on July 22, 2007 12:40 am
July 12, 2007 - 7 months post op. Down 80lbs. Now, on 7/21/07, I'm down 85lbs.
I had my 6 month post op on 7/9/07, and everything is going well. Got the okay to add carbs back in to my diet. So, been doing that, and it's fueled the body to really work the weight. I'm going to enjoy it this month while it lasts, because I figure next month it'll be old news and back to losing more slowly.
My measurements are shrinking:
Bust - 36 inches
Waist - 36 inches
Hips - 48 inches
Starting to notice some jiggle in the thighs.. ugh.. and we won't talk about the batwings!
All in all, I'm still so tickled with my surgery, and should have some updated pictures up soon.

5 Months Post-Op on April 26, 2007 6:18 pm
Tuesday was my 5 month post-op date. Fred (my bastage of a scale) still hasn't dropped below 195lbs, but I do have to admit, I've been doing some late night snacking.
Time to get back on track. I had a graze day, at work today. Mostly protein, small handful of peanuts, mini cheese stick and beef stick (size of pinkie finger)... BUT.. I managed to allow myself to eat a WHOLE Payday candy bar. UGH! What was I thinking?
So, no beating myself up. But guess it's time to start logging my food for a few days, and find out if I need to adjust to eat bigger meals earlier in the day, or if I'm allowing myself to eat in the late afternoon before dinner, and after, because I'm bored. If so, time to get more sleep, and move my rump more, I think!
So, for my 5 month post-op, I'm down 65 lbs, wearing 14/16 & 18/20 tops, and 18/20 bottoms. Almost everything agrees with the Supreme Ruler (the pouch) now, and I haven't started to loose my hair (knock on wood)!

My Eating Schedule Now.. (More or Less) on April 10, 2007 5:39 pm
Well, at my 3 month recheck, the PA said it was time to kick the shakes and powders, unless absolutely needed. So, my protein intake was upped to 11-12oz of protein, divided among my meals & snacks for the day (so 77g of protein minimum).
My day currently looks like:
B: 3-4 oz of protein, 2 oz of fruit (21-24g protein)
S: 1 oz protein (if I'm hungry by then) (6-8g)
L: 4 oz of protein, 2 oz of fruit or veggie (24g protein)
S: Usually yogurt or my 8 oz of milk (6-8g protein)
D: 4 oz protein (24g protein)
So, even without the morning snack, I'm at 77g of protein for the day. Add in the morning snack it's 84-85g. I can muddle fudge the calculations as well, if I don't want my snacks.
If I'm feeling crappy (like when I was sick for a week), I can add 1/2 to 1 scoop of vanilla Body Fortress Whey protein from Walmart to my yogurt (or chocolate to my milk for chocolate milk) and that's between 11-23g of protein added to my day (if I don't feel up to eating the 3-4oz of protein at each of my meals).
I haven't really touched the powder since I was a little under 3 1/2 months. All my protein comes from food now.

My Story I've always felt that I was heavier than my peers, all through grade school and high school. When I look back now, I realize I wasn't that much heavier than most of the girls my age, I just chose to wear comfortable clothing, instead of cutting off circulation! It was when I graduated high school and the years after, that I really started to put on the weight. In increments of 10, 20, 40lbs. I'd lose the weight, then gain it back, and more. Doctor would just tell me to diet and excerise. Um, what did he think I'd been doing for years? *sighs* About five years ago, my best friend finally had RYN bypass, and was very happy with her results. My mom was going through the end stages of terminal kidney cancer, so I put everything on hold to take care of her at home, where she wanted to be. Then a year after she passed away, I got married to the most wonderful man. He's never said a thing about my weight, which I think was the final deciding factor when I was told at the beginning of this year, after many years of infertility, that the only way I'd most likely conceive was a massive weight loss. But then with the Polycystic Ovary Syndrome, my stupid body refuses to let anything go! So, that's when I broached the subject with him again, about having gastric bypass.
And that is where we are today. Post RYN gastric bypass, and slowly working my way towards a more active lifestyle!
