Surgeon Testimonial

Marina Kurian
She is AMAZING! I've known her since 2001 when she was at Lenox Hill where I had my RNY with a different surgeon. When I came to an info session in 2010, seeking a revision, the first thing she said to me, was "I remember you" and then when I told her how much I gained back she replied "you are still beautiful". Worried about what I was to do, DS, RNY-RNY or a BOB, she guided me thru the process to the BOB. She knew my weaknesses (wine) and my strengths (exercise) and gave me the information and knowledge to make a educated decision. I went with the BOB. When my Mom, who was totally supportive with the RNY in 2002, objected, Dr. K spoke to her on the phone, answering all her questions. The night before my surgery, I spoke with her on the phone and she reassured me of my decision. Today, I am 4 mos out, have restriction back and down over 40lbs, and I am 16lbs to goal. Dr. Kurian has been as advertised as I knew she would be.

Ignorance
on January 31, 2012 6:45 am
The level of ignorance on this board is astounding.  When I had my RNY in 2002, everyone was an authority, or had to be bc WLS was still "new". I don't think many went into it without serious amounts of research and planning. Now days, I think people think its just a minor operation and that its commonplace, "everyone's doing it"....the questions I read posted to this and other forums as well as the questions I am emailed about the band, BLOW MY MIND!

People are having this surgery without any knowledge about the procedure, the diet, the follow-up fills, the expectations, etc.  I'M SORRY, BUT, I NEED TO SAY IT AGAIN....WTF?

Information is POWER.  People, do your research.  Chose a reputable surgeon.  RESEARCH, RESEARCH., RESEARCH.

Ask how many surgeries he has done?
What is his complication rate?
Slippages?  Erosions?  Removable not reversible?
His opinion on revisions?
Why this surgery over something else?
Ask him what his fu care if like?
Does he have a support group?
What will my life be like after the band?
When will my first fill be?
How much does a cash fill cost incase my insurance changes or I lose my job?
Will the weight loss be as fast as the RNY?
How often are you going to do fills? In what increments? When is the first?
Do you pre-set the band at surgery with a minor fill?

All I am saying is don't let someone operate on you unless you are 100% informed. And, from what I am reading/witnessing, more than 50% of you are not. SAD.  You are setting yourself up for failure, without even knowing it, bc you may have chose the wrong procedure or the wrong doctor.

7th Fill today
on January 28, 2012 2:24 pm
Dr K added another .6 cc to my band, she didn't want to and I kind of urged her to do it.  With the depression of not working, I've been eating not stop.  I'm hoping the added restriction helps.  I know I am not a grazer and never have been, so, this is temporary.

Depression about being laid off
on January 16, 2012 9:26 am
I am a mess as of late. I am not in a good place. I was laid off in mid-October and have yet to find a job. I was al gung-ho the first few weeks, looking, sendign out resumes, but, with no real direction.  Applying for things in my areas of expertise (sales, BD, marketing, non-profit and admissions).  I was also doing some consulting for DFS.  When the consulting ended mid-Dec. I threw myself into prepping for XMAS.  Now, I am really lost. I want to work in Admissions, Graduate Admissions, but, there are not a lot of jobs out there. The target list is small.  What makes it worse is that universities generally don't hire till the end of the fiscal year, unless there is a vacancy. Baruch College, my alma mater for my MBA, is hiring an Assoc position, but, I just don't have a great feeling about this.

I've reached out to a few therapists to help with my depression, I am scared that I am going to continue to sink lower and lower and also eat myself to death, ruin this wonderful weight loss.  I am so bored I am eating and I am eating badly. I am not drinking wine, which is good, but, I worry that I may eventually.

I am FINALLY under 200lbs
on January 13, 2012 6:43 am
After walking there and back last night to volleyball, an excess of 4mi, and then playing for 2+ hours, the scale finally moved. Weighing in at 199.2 this am!  10 lbs from RNY goal, then 25lbs from lost goal and then time for a new goal!  Love my Band!
