Surgeon Testimonial

Jon L. Schram, M.D., F.A.C.S.
Dr. Schram seemed like a nice man. My time with him at my consult was very short. I think it is because I already know a lot about the surgery and didnt have many questions to ask him. He explained what they did during the surgery process, so that it was easy to understand. He also told me about some of the risk and death ratio. Which I'm not worried about in my situation. I have chosen BTC and Dr. Schram because I have heard alot of wonderful things about Dr. Schram and the many surgerys he has performed outside the BTC surgery.

The staff was really nice and helpful. I really like the way they handle the aftercare. I have been attending BTC meetings with my sister for the past year and feel I get a lot of good information from there.

Well, it’s official! You’re on the losing side. The trumpets are blaring, the cymbals are crashing and the drums are drumming – all for YOU! I hope that all went well for you! You’ve been out of surgery now for a little over a month – YIPPIE!!! Your journey will have moments to “pause” – I’d like to impart some words of wisdom for when it does occur - remember these wise words whispered by Confucius – “It does not matter how slowly you go so long as you do not stop.” Be patient. You didn’t put it on over night, it won’t come off over night (DARN IT!)… RNY 10/31/03 – down 87 pounds!!! Good luck!

9/14/10  I'm a 6.5 years post-op RNY patient.  My highest weight before surgery was 268lbs.  I have lost over 100lbs and I currently weigh between 156-160lbs.  For the most part, I have maintained this weight lose except during the time I was pregnant and the 1st 2 years after my son was born, when I gained almost 20lbs (highest weight 175lbs).  I refocused myself with diet and exercise in the Spring and lost the extra weight I gained.  After a trip to Czech Republic in June/July, I'm trying to get back on track and loose another 10-20lbs.  I currently wear a size 10 pants (sometimes smaller or bigger) and Med./Large shirt.

I hope to have a lower body lift in the next couple of years.  I don't have a ton of loose skin, but feel the LBL will help with the overall skin tone and would help me boost my self-confidence and help my body look and be the best it can be!

For any of those people that are scared, concerned or are doubting their choice to have the surgery or not, I would strongly encourage you to do it!  Just remember that it is a tool.  Years after surgery, you still need to watch what you eat and the amounts that you eat and you should have great success from the surgery!  Best wishes to all of you pre-op and post-op patients!

Expecting my 4th child October 25, 2011
on March 21, 2011 6:32 am
Wow, I didn't think I would have 4 kids, but here I am expecting October 25!  I'm nervous and excited at the same time.  Children are a huge blessing and a huge amount of work!  I just hope I can be a good mom to them all!

Long time not posting....
on September 14, 2010 11:52 am
It's been soo long since I last posted.  It gets harder and harder to come back here to post the longer you are out from surgery (and of course having 3 kids to take care of)!  My baby is now 2 years old and the cutest little thing you have ever seen...definately has the "IT" factor!  My oldest son will turn 12 in December and just started 6th Grade (so hard to believe) and my one and only daughter is 9!

Since my last posting, I gained weight and got up to 175lbs.  In April 2010, I started to diet and exercise and lost almost 20lbs.  I'm feeling much better about myself again, but want to loose another 10-20 lbs.  We visited our family in Czech Republic in June/July and since then, I haven't been exercising and eating as healthy.  My goal is to get back on track and loose some more weight!  I hope I can inspire people with my weight loss success and keeping it off for nearly 6.5 years!!!!  I can honestly say I don't EVER see myself obese again!  Food and eating is something you have to stay aware of and remember to keep using your tool!  Take your vitamins, drink plenty of water, watch your portions and find some sort of activity to do and you will be a success too!

On a side note...my BMI to the left is not accurate...it's based on me weighing 163lbs, which as of today I weighed 159lbs!

I've lost a couple pounds! Yeah!
on December 1, 2008 8:07 am
I'm happy to say that I have been weighing anywhere from 163-165.  Obviously, I still want to lose more weight, but I'm happy I lost those couple of pounds and keeping them off.  If I can maintain for a little while there and then drop another couple pounds here and there, I would be elated!  I'm still wearing mostly 12's and some 10's and large shirts (fitted shirts just don't look right on me anymore since having the baby).  I can't wait for the day that I can have plastic surgery and get rid of all this lose skin once and for all!

I'm very happily married to the most wonderful man in the world!  We will be married 3 years on December 10.  I thank God everyday for bringing such an awesome man into my life.  My baby is now 4 months old and adorable as all get out.  My oldest son will turn 10 on December 13 and I cannot believe how fast years go by.  It doesn't seem like I should have a 10 year old!  And I can't forget to mention my beautiful daughter who will turn 8 in March.  I'm truely blessed to have such a wonderful family!

Still struggling
on October 10, 2008 6:27 am
I'm still  struggling to lose these few last pounds I gained during my pregnancy.  I'm currently weighing between 165-167 (lowest weight ever was around 155 on my old scale).  I know that this is only 3-5 pounds from my pre-pregnancy weight and my doctors lowest scale weight...but darnit, I want to get back into my 150's (and lower if possible).  What totally sucks is that I'm pretty close to my pre-pregnancy weight, but my clothes don't fit or look the same (most are to small, tight and short).  I was wearing mostly 8's (and 10's) before and now wearing mostly 12's (some 10's).  I know I need to buckle down and drink more water and make healthier choices.  Some days I do really good and other days I just want to eat junk all day.  I guess to some degree I should consider myself lucky that I didn't gain any of the weight I lost from my surgery prior to my pregnancy.  It's just so hard to lose these last few pounds and even if I do get them off, I'm affraid that I will never get into my old jeans because my body shape is different now (especially in the belly).  Some days I feel so fat and other days I feel happy with how far I have come since my surgery.  It's a mind game that will never go away and I know I always will have to watch what I eat so I don't gain any more weight back.  This surgery has changed my life drastically and I'm a much happier person now.  I have 3 great kids, a great husband and a nice home to live in.  I'm able to stay at home and take care of my children.  God has truly blessed me in many ways.  I just wished I could accept my body the way it is and get past the fact that it will never be perfect.  I still plan to get a lower body lift in the future (hopefully in the next couple of years), but I'm affraid that even after that, I won't be happy with my body.  The surgery has definately helped me to lose the weight and keep it off, but it hasn't helped my brain and the way I think.  Food will always be an addiction that will be hard to overcome.

My Story

My sister has had the surgery through BTC office in Holland, MI. I am very interested in having the surgery but have concerns if I will get the approval. I am I little bit discuraged because I have Priority Health Insurance and was told that they dont honor BTC, but that you have to go to a MMPC office. I have been attending support meetings with my sister for BTC. Don't know if I have surgery with MMPC, if I will be able to still attend with my BTC meetings with my sister.

4/15/03 My husband may be taking a new job and the insurance carrier will be Great West Life. I think I might have a better chance to get approval through them. I have to wait 90 days though after my husband starts job. Does anyone have suggestions?

10/14/03 I had my consult with Dr. Schram at the BTC office in Holland. Everything is a go on his part. Now I have to wait until Nov. 1st to send everything to my new insurance company ( that is when it starts). I hope that everything will go good for me.

11/24/03 According to BTC, my insurance requires a pyschological evaulation. I had that done last week Tuesday and I'm waiting for results to be sent to BTC. They said it would take a week or two (I'm hoping for a week). Once BTC gets the results then everything will be sent to my insurance carrier. I pray that everything will go fast and smooth. I hope that they will give me approval quickly. I would love to have this surgery done the last week in December.

12/5/03 All my paperwork was faxed over to my insurance company today. Now I just need to wait to see if they approve me. I hope I get an answer fast.

12/9/03 Called my insurance company today, they said I was denied and that I needed detailed diet history and diet supervised program in past 24 months. I feel sooo depressed. I dont want to wait 6 months to have this surgery, I want it now.

1/13/04 Went and seen my doctor Friday, she put me on a 1,500 calorie diet, so I guess this is what I'll be doing for the next 6 months. I wished I somehow could get around this and have the surgery earlier, but I'll do what I have to do to get approved.

2/08/04 Went to my doctor on Friday, I lost 9lbs! I also sent in an appeal letter and waiting for a response. Until I get that response, I will continue on my doctor supervised diet. I'm just trying to stick with this and hopefully have the surgery sometime in the very near future.

2/11/04 I called regarding my appeal letter today and found out that they approved me! So now I'll probably wait until beginning of April to have surgery, because that is when I can have daycare lined up for my kids!

2/23/04 I have my surgery date. It is March 8. YOOWHOO!

3/11/04 Well I'm home from having my surgery, everything went smoothly and I'm starting to heal and get better. I will post more later when I'm not so tired.

3/21/04 I am doing wonderful. I have no more pain and am getting around really well. I have put makeup on and done my hair the last couple of days and also have been out of the house with my family to get groceries. I have played cards with our neighbors a couple of times as well. I called my doctor or Friday cause my incision and the surrounding area was itching so bad, they told me to go ahead and carefully remove the stary strips and put vitiman E on it, boy what a relief. I have my 2 week appt with Dr. Schram on the 25th, so it will be interesting to find out how much I lost.

4/1/04 I went to see Dr. Schram last Thursday and was down 13 pounds! I weighed myself yesterday and lost an additional 5 pounds. Everything is going great and I feel good! I can't wait to be out of these plus sizes!

4/8/04 I went to weigh in at BTC office and I lost 22 pounds that will be gone forever! I feel wonderful and I am getting lots of energy back!

4/21/04 Down another 6 pounds!

4/28/04 I Had my 6 week check-up today and I am down a total of 29.1 pounds. I feel good and am down 2 sizes. I cant wait for the day that I weight under 200lbs.

9/11/04 I'm 6 months post-op and doing great! I've lost 75 pounds so far and still losing, but more slowly. No more plus sizes for me......whooohooo!!!! I can say this is the best thing I could have done for myself and I have had no regrets from the very beginning.

12/7/04 Well I'm still losing but very slowly. I still have no regrets. This was a great thing to happen to me.

3/29/05 I had my 1 year check up today and am doing great. I went from a size 22/24 pants and 3x shirt to a size 8/10 pants and Med shirt (Some things I can even wear a size 6). I have not dealt with any complications, which Im thankful for. I would definately without a doubt recommend this surgery to anyone that qualifies for it. It's a life changing process and has only enriched my life. The most important thing to me is that I finally feel normal again and dont feel like people are looking at me because of my size but because of who I really am. I still continue to lose weight, but still very slowly and each pound makes a huge difference at this stage. But I know I will be happy to stay the size I am now and just continue to work on keeping the weight off for the rest of my life
