Surgeon Testimonial

David Kermode
Dr. Kermode as well as the other doctors at Grinnell are great! The staff at the office as well as the hospital are wonderful & knowledgeable. Having worked there in the past, I can honestly say there is no where else I would go for care of any type, especially surgery. Their bariatric program is one of the best in the country and very streamlined. It includes an on staff dietician, psychiatric care, wellness (fitness) staff, a nurse specifically there to take patient phone calls and many others who are more than willing to answer questions and help you get things done.

June 17, 2011

Wow, it's been forever since I've been on here!  I haven't forgotten... just out keeping up with life now & it's wonderful!  It's been a rough road the past couple years, but this last winter, I got the best unexpected news.  After almost 10 years, I am going to have a baby!  Ethan is due August 1, 2011 and I can't wait!  It's been a little frustrating packing on a few pounds when I've spent the last four years trying to work it all off, but it will be worth it.  Guess I'll just have to start up my loss blog again:)  December 2010, right before I found out I was pregnant, I had evened out to around 180 and a size 10/12.  I don't even want to know what size I am at the moment... we'll just say Maternity size and leave it at that!  My other three monkeys turn 6, 7 & 8 next month & are really excited to be getting a baby brother.  Just one more reason the surgery was a good thing for me.  I had given up on the dream of ever becoming a birthmom... was actually pretty mad when I found out, but he is my little miracle & I can't help but think that the bypass probably fixed whatever the issue was.   Now another friend is starting her journey & wanting advice...  So I sent her here to read & explore.  I hope that her dreams come true and it is everything she makes of it.  Good luck!  I'll be back again to visit someday soon.

201 lbs. GONE!
on February 4, 2009 5:16 pm
Wow...  down to 177... 201 lbs down from my highest of 378.  Just crazy!   Wearing an 8/10/M now.  Only 27 more lbs to go til my goal and not quite 2 years out.  Bounced around in the 180's for quite a while, but finally losing again, slowly but surely.  I think I've finally found a routine for the vitamins that works.  I'd do great for a week or so then start forgetting...  I got a med minder for the month and programmed it into my phone calendar AND write it on my to-do list every night.  So far 3 weeks and no missed days:)  I really want to get my tummy and arms done, but might just have to wait a while if I can.  Starting to get really irritated in places & not much is helping.  I start college on the 24th.  Finally going back for Transcription & coding.  Will take a year, but I'll finally be back doing something that I love to do.  Otherwise, not much to report.  My best friend is going to have her bypass in March & I'm trying my best to be there for her from 3 hours away.  It will be the best gift she could ever give herself.  I know it was for me.

Bouncing around...
on May 23, 2008 11:35 am

Bouncing between 185 & 190 for the past month or so.  So much going on, just haven't paid much attention to the scale lately. Steady in a size 12 jeans and M/L tops...   Started a new job & so far it's going great.  Pacemaker is working 50% of the time, so actually did need it.  Good news, but still wish I didn't have to have it.  Haven't had much chance to get new pics up lately.  I'll do that soon.  I want to lost 15 to 20 more lbs at least before I go in to see about having my tummy done.  Right now, I'm about 50 lbs lighter than when I graduated high school.  The attention is different, but mostly nice.  People don't look away like they used to.  I just want to shove it in the psychologist's face though.  Told me that I had to be over eating when my doctor was getting after me for not eating enough.  I honestly think that all the medications I was on had something to do with that.  Figure over a dozen meds and half had the side effect of weight gain.  On top of that my diabetes was out of control.  Scary thinking how much different things are now.  Nothing but vitamins now & no surgery or weight related problems.  Except for the whole heart thing... inherited from mother's side... I'm doing great.  I do find myself thinking back alot lately though.  Just amazing how much difference there is in my life now.  I'm able to get out camping & fishing & even play at the park with my kids.  I'm really looking forward to getting to the state fair this year.  Last time I got to go, I was fat and miserable.  This time should be much better.  I have to laugh at myself sometimes...  I keep telling my boyfriend I want to go to Jamaica because they like the girls with the big butts there.... He just looks at me and says "Honey, I hate to tell ya, your butt's nice, but there's not much there anymore"    Well, I still want to go to Jamaica... might even look for a swimsuit for the first time in many years.  Anyway, nothing exciting to report, but getting closer to my goal:)

One year down... 186 lbs. Lost:)
on March 11, 2008 8:10 am

A lot has happened in the past few weeks.  I'm down to 192 lbs now.  A total of 186 lbs lost so far & counting:)  I'm down into a Size M/L/12

I had a pacemaker put in on 2/28/08.  I had a couple episodes of passing out & my heart rate was running in the 30's & 40's.  The doctor down here thought I had a bowel obstruction, so they sent me up to my surgeon.  Well they were seeing my bypass...not an obstruction. Luckily, since they don't deal with gastric patients there, they sent me back home to be seen... or I'd still be working & worrying about passing out again.  The same doc had sent me home 2 weeks before all this because they couldn't find anything wrong except the low heart rate.  Well, long story short, the docs up home sent me to Iowa Methodist & 2 days later I had a dual lead pacemaker put in.

So far, I seem to be doing pretty well.  I'm no longer exhausted all the time... Just sore & pretty bruised up.  I'm off work until the first of April & just taking some time for me right now.  I posted a few more pictures... What a difference a year can make!!

My Story

I am a stay at home mom of 3 wonderful kids.  My boy is 3 & my girls are 2 & 18 months.  I've been diabetic since 2001 and have several other weight related health issues at the moment.  I had my initial consult in October of 2006, was approved by Wellmark on December 7, 2006 and just recently got my surgery date of March 6, 2007.  Will be having an open Roux en Y.  There is a 95% chance that I will no longer be diabetic... That will be a reward in itself, but I'm sure a new smaller behind won't be a bad thing either :o)  Where does a gal go shopping once  you get under a size 12/14??  Will be exciting to find out!
