Surgeon Testimonial

Stefan M. Pettine, M.D.
Dr. Pettine and the staff show respect and concern while making you feel comfortable and secure with them as your caretakers. rnNow that the surgery is over, I can honestly say that I feel I was very blessed to have had Dr. Pettine. The more contact I have with him, the more impressed I am with him. Throughout the process, you are encouraged to call with questions and concerns. There is also a very well planned aftercare program and unlimited support to make this successful for each patient. rnMy impression of his surgical competence is very high and I have to admit he has a great bedside manner which includes truly getting to know the patient and encouraging them. This is a team effort... you are not alone if you are fortunate enough to have Dr. Pettine as your surgeon.

My WLS Journey
Winning BY Losing

1 Year out....
on September 23, 2007 10:58 am
I just realized I've not updated since my visit with Dr. Pettine on 9/14/07!!! I'm down 107 lbs with another 55 to go by his goal, but in truth, I'm hoping for another 80-85 but a lot of that will be determinded as I continue to move downward.  I realize I'm dealing with a huge amount of excess skin, age and lifestyle.  But I also think I'm going to play it by ear with a careful eye on reality.
Dr. Pettine seemed to be as happy about my weight loss as I am.  I know many Dr. will not do people in their 60's for a variety of reasons including the fact that some don't have the needed motivation to "get 'er done".  Well,  I plan to continue to win by losing for my health sake and the fact that I not only feel a LOT better, but I also look a LOT better.  And I'm fortunate to have people around me that are continuing to encourage me.  For that, I'm very thankful.
Onward and DOWNward.....!!!!!

March 2007 Dr. Visit
on March 9, 2007 8:35 am
On 03/07/07 I went to see Dr. Pettine and found that I'm now down 65 lbs.  and my BMI has dropped to 52 from the start of 62.6.  To me that is great news and he was pleased with it too.  We again talked about my age and physical condition not allowing me the level of exercise that a younger woman may have and as a result my losses aren't as dramatic.  However, I'm averaging a little over 10 lbs. per month.  Not bad for an old broad and I'm definately feeling better.
Dr. Pettine would like for me to start to reduce my protein drink intake and gain my of my protein from foods.  He also indicated that the South Beach Protein Bars are acceptable to use.
Unfortunately the labs didn't arrive so we were unable to review those and see exactly where I stood.  But after I came home I made some calls and hopefully they will be in the office as I write this update.
He did comment that by my next appointment in June I should be through with the hair loss and I feel that is true since I'm seeing new growth at this point.  It will be a joy to have a real head of hair again.
(Lord I ask that you forgive me for my complaining about how much I had and how fast it grew.)
I've updated my "ticker" which now includes both BMI and pounds lost.

Progress is slow but it's still progress!!
on January 30, 2007 5:13 pm
I had a visit with my PCP today and learned I was down another 12 lbs.  I would have loved a larger loss, but its a loss so I'm thankful for each pound gone.  I did some thinking on where I was and where I am now.
1-Yesterday I went to Colorado Springs with my daughter and great-granddaughter and we had a good day together.
2-I'm taking my little dog for walks (some days I'm making it twice a day).
3-I've adjusted my seat and steering wheel in my van to a more comfortable position for my body because my "belly" doesn't need as much room.
4-I'm taking on more around the house and not depending on the home care ladies for as much help.
5-I'm doing most of my own shopping instead of relying on others.
6-On the down side, I've lost so much hair that people are commenting on the hair loss instead of how much hair I have!! My scalp is quite shiny as it reflects out of my sparse and still falling locks of hair.  Hopefully, I'll soon see a reversal in this situation but I'm only 4 months out, so that may take a while longer.

9 lbs down....
on December 5, 2006 3:06 pm
I went to the dentist today and his office is in a medical facility so I asked if I could weigh while I was there.
I'm so happy to report that I've lost 9 more lbs. since my last check-up on 11/14.  I'm down 44 lbs. and my BMI has dropped from 62.6 to 55.5.
I know there is a long way to go, but I'm thrilled with the progress.

11/14/06 check up
on November 16, 2006 6:49 am

Its taken me a couple of days to get to a point (emotionally) where I could post on my latest Dr. visit.
The trip is always so tiring because at best its 10 hours round trip plus the time with the Dr.  This time it was over 12 hours and I think being so tired played a big part in my reaction when I learned (much to my own disappointment) that I had "only"  lost 11 lbs. over the last month.  But now I've gotten some rest and I'm able to step back and realize its not that bad.  It really is a significant loss bringing me to 34 lbs. lost in 7 weeks.
Thats almost 5 lbs. per week average.  (Or as Dr. Pettine pointed out its almost 10% of my starting body weight!!)  With that and the help of all the love given me by the OH OFF sisters I'm now thinking in those terms and I've cleaned up my "stinking thinking" on this whole thing.
