Surgeon Testimonial

Luis Reyes, M.D.
Dr. Reyes looks younger than I thought he'd be. He has a no nonsense approach. He talks to you about all your options and explains them thoroughly. There is no question that he's good at what he does b/c he has a line of patients coming in and out. If he decides you're a good candidate, right there, they start the process. The insurance clerk sits down with you to go over procedures. The office clerk gets on the phone and starts making appointments with your PCP, nutritionist, psychiatrist, and any other professionals you need to see. You leave with a list of appointments, tests, and other things you need to do before the insurance letter gets sent. You leave feeling like your in good hands. The entire staff is friendly and personable. I did consult Dr. Reyes in Jan 2003 for WLS, but my insurance at the time had an exclusion. I was disappointed that the office never offered to work with me on an appeal. I guess that they were more familiar with the requirements of my insurance company and knew that my denial would not be overturned on appeal. It wouldn't have been b/c the company is self-funded and they made the decision the first time. Anyway, I'm glad that I went back.

Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.
It's been a lifelong battle. As most overweight people do, I had tried every possible diet and diet pill. I gained the majority of my weight during my pregnancies. It has been a struggle almost all my adult life.

Annual Physical - 2 years post-op
on August 17, 2007 6:22 pm
I had my physical exam with my PCP today.  She doesn't think that I should lose much more weight.  I agree with her.  I think about 15 to 20 pounds more and I'll be done.  My blood pressure was 112/68, pretty good.  I get my blood work results in 2 weeks.  I have my annual well woman's exam next week.  I still need to schedule my mammogram.  I didn't get one last year, so I need to make sure I get it done this year.

Fitness Boot Camp Day #6
on August 17, 2007 6:17 pm

We did the same workout we did the previous Friday night, August 3rd.  We ran a lap, then started the circuit of 20 lunges, 20 squats, 20 push-ups, 30 crunches, then run a lap.  We did this 5 times.  I had a time of 30 min, 46 seconds.  I beat the last time by over 6 minutes.  Whoo-hoo!

We have 6 more sessions.  We'll probably have rain next week so we may not get a chance to meet.  Tropical Storm/Hurricane Dean is coming!

Fitness Boot Camp #5
on August 14, 2007 6:51 pm

We were rained out yesterday, so we met today.  I missed all last week (2 sessions) because I was in Houston.  We had our measurements taken.  Today seemed to be an easier workout.  We did 2 laps, then worked with a medicine ball, and one of those big balls, and some exercise wheel.  I'll see how sore I am tomorrow.  It felt good to get back with the workout though.  We're going to meet again tomorrow if the weather holds up.  It's supposed to rain.

Fitness Boot Camp #4
on August 3, 2007 9:20 pm
Tonight we did a rotation of different exercise.  I was surprised that I was able to finish it in the time allotted.  The men had to finish in 38 minutes, the ladies in 45 minutes.

First, we jogged 2 laps.  Then we had to do 20 lunges, 20 squats, 20 push-ups, 30 crunches, and then jog 1 lap, walk 1 lap, then redo it 5 times.  I finished 4 out of 7.  Not too shabby for a former fat girl!  I'm on vacation out of town next week, so I'll exercise for 20 minutes a day.  My trainer said not to do more than that.

This is how committed I am to this program:  I have shortened my vacation from 2 weeks to 1 week so that I don't miss out on too many sessions.  I also actually left my husband and Annie at the night clinic to go to my boot camp, then returned to pick them up after I finished.  Annie swallowed a nickel so we were there getting x-rays.  We got there at 5:30 when they opened, but we were still only #8 in line.  We finally left at 9:50 PM.  Thank God the nickel is in her large intestine and should within the day or two.  We're like archeologists searching for hidden treasure.

I'll post soon.

Fitness Boot Camp Day #3
on August 2, 2007 6:53 am
We met last night to work on our upper bodies.  We started with jogging 4 laps.  Then we started our arm workouts.  We used 8 lb. weights.  We had to do 3 sets of 30 seconds each of each exercise.  Between exercises we had to jog 1 lap, walk 1 back.  The final exercise was us on the ground like for a push up, but bring your body down parallel to the ground, and hold it for 30 seconds.  PAIN!!  I felt like my insides were being ripped apart.  We had to do that exercise 3 times, then do a slowdown - 2 laps walking.    I woke up this morning with pain in my thighs, especially right above my inner knee.  I can feel the burn in my future 6 pack and my shoulders.  The biggest difference I've noticed is my upper arms.  The swimming followed by these workouts has really toned up my upper arms.  I'm even wearing sleeveless shirts!  That's how good they look.

I got my diet from the trainer yesterday.  It's basically similar to the diet I'm already on, except he gave me Wednesday as a cheat day.  I guess that he wanted to save me on shopping because the menus are pretty resrictive and contain the same foods.  I'm going to substitute fish for some of the chicken because chicken doesn't sit well sometimes.  Here it is:

Menu 1
Breakfast:  1 sl. Bread, whole wheat; 2 T.  peanut butter
Lunch:  1-1/2 cps. tossed salad; 4 oz. low fat turkey breast; 2 T. lite dressing
Snack:  1 orange
Snack: 1/2 cp. strawberries; Dannon Light Yogurt
Dinner: 1 Hamburger patty 8 0z.

Menu 2
Breakfast:  1 Egg with 2 egg whites; 1 T. margarine; 1 sl. cheese
Snack:  Protein bar or shake
Lunch:  6 oz. tuna; 1 tsp. mayonnaise
Snack:  1 peach; Dannon Light Yogurt
Dinner:  4 oz. chicken; 1 T. margarine; 1/2 cp. cooked broccoli; 1 T. butter
Snack:  1/2 cantaloupe melon

Menu 3:
Breakfast: 1-1/4 cp. Cornflakes; 1 cp. skim milk
Snack: 1 orange
Lunch: 4 0z. chicken; 1 med. baked potato; 1 T. margarine
Dinner: 6 oz. tuna; 2 sl. whole wheat bread; 1 Tsp. mayonnaise
Snack:  Dannon light yogurt
