Surgeon Testimonial

Manuel Castro, M.D., Ph.D
What can I say about Dr. Castro? He is a hero to me. He saved my life. It took me some time to be able to get everything in order to get my surgery done, but let me tell you, he and his staff were right there with me the whole way.
The surgery went great and he has a really good bedside manner and he is very competent in what he does.

I would recommend him highly to anyone, and I have in fact sent friends there.

6 Months and a new life
posted on 4/27/11 7:57 am
Wow, it has already been six months for me. I am so amazed by the changes that I have already seen in my life. I am so much healthier and happier than I was just 6 months ago.

You see before my surgery I lived a life that many would say is rough. I used an electric wheelchair, I could not walk from my driveway to the next on my own. I used 3 liters of oxygen 24 hours a day. I was on so much insulin that I had to take a special kind that was ultra concentrated, so I did not have to give myself like 10 shots a day. They were talking about putting me on an insulin pump. I was on over 20 different medications a day. I took three blood pressure medications as well as three different diurectics, so that we could try to control the fluid retention I had. I was hospilatized a few times in the past three years for diabetes and fluid build up, once I was in critical condition when I was admitted, because it was affecting my breathing.

6 months after all of this, I no longer am on oxygen, I no longer use a wheelchair to get around, I am taking only one blood pressure medication, and it is a very low dose. I am OFF ALL my diabetes medications and my last A1c was a 5. It was NORMAL. Do you know that I do not think I have ever, been normal.

I walk around stores and the mall and on treadmills, I still have pain, I have a severe back injury from a car accident 20 years ago, that was never treated so it has deteriorated and I will need surgery. But we are waiting for me to lose some more weight before we do it. We are just managing the pain for now. I have lost almost 120lbs since the start of this journey.

I have inspired those around me who are morbidly obese to take this journey with me. My best friend and my boy friend are both going to be having the surgery to help them to lose weight.

I would do this over again and again if it was necessary, you see, this has helped me get a new lease on life and I can honestly say that it saved my life, because I do not think I would have lived another year had I not done it and lost so much weight.

Am I done? NOT YET, I still have a long way to go, at least another 170lbs to get to my goal, but for me, I have made a great start and I am going to keep at it, until I am there, because it is worth every moment I live now.

If you are questioning whether to have the surgery or not, just look at me, It has changed my life.
