Surgeon Testimonial

Muhammad A. Jawad, M.D.
The staff at Dr.Jawad's Ocala office, have all been great so far. I really liked Dr. Jawad's approach, he is a tell it like it is surgeon, which I like. I have no complaints so far.

Hi there, I am a 35 year old Army Wife and mother, who has been a member of this site since 2003, but still hasn't had the surgery. It is strange, I meet the insurance's requirements, I also have, but for some reason, I keep getting these PCM's who do not want to refer me for some reason or another or I get referred but get an idiot surgeon who will not do the surgery, or has stopped doing the surgery. I am back once again! This time I am not giving up! I will do what it takes to get this done!

Wow! It's been a while
on May 20, 2011 5:29 am
So a lot has changed since my last post. I switched surgeons, because the staff at Memorial Health and I did not mesh. I had issues with lots of miscommunication, rudeness, pretty much told nothing, except come to an informational meeting, I had to figure out where and when that meeting was, and lets just say that just doesn't work for me. I prefer an old fashioned Dr. approach I guess, like an office asking for your info up front so they know who you are, getting an actual appt. to see a Dr in a timely manner.
So after speaking with my PCM, we decided that Memorial health and I was not going to work out, so I then switched to Dr. Jawad's office in Ocala, FL. I loved it from Day 1, called to set up an appt., as soon as I was approved for the appt. through my insurance, this was on May 11., got a call back on May 12. Went to the initial appt on May 17. Started out as a group meeting, to discuss surgery (an informational meeting). Then we had individual appts. with surgeon. I love this approach, it is more normal to me, the way it should be. As soon as I walked in the office I was impressed everyone was friendly, smiles on all their faces. I knew I was a great candidate for surgery, so to no surprise the Dr. didn't argue with me. I have Tricare as my insurer and there was no issues, really nothing, I met their requirements, and was approved for surgery within 24 hours of the submit.
My estimated surgery date is June 13, 2011. That will most likely change as soon as I get the call from the Dr. Office, saying they received approval. After 10 years of research, 4 failed referrals (Being turned away, told to diet more, etc) I finally got to see a surgeon that knows how damn hard it is to lose weight once you are 100lbs overweight. Thank you God for Dr. Jawad.

I have my multivitamin, calcium, b-12, ordered and on the way, too bad tricare doesn't cover those. I have some protein samples ordered, I have also purchased, just a few ready to drink protein shakes.
I am having tons of issues finding sugar free items that I can have, I can not have Aspartame, as I am allergic. So far I am very limited in drink mix brands (no crystal light, no sugar free koolaid, only 2 brands so far that I can have), No Sugar Free Jello mix, sugar free pudding mix, (but have found ready made sugar free pudding, but not jello), So that is going to be a challenge for me. But I am up for it.

Referral Approved!
on April 14, 2011 6:56 am
I found out this morning that my referral was approved, I will be seeing Dr. Whipple, at Memorial Health in Savannah, GA. I have to attend the Meeting on May 4th, that is how you get an appointment with the surgeon. So now I am waiting for that.

My Story

-06-08---> It has been a long time since I have been here..I was turned down at the surgeon appt. It took me 3 months to get an appt. to see the surgeon. Then he did a group appt. and basically told all of us, to go on a diet, start exercising, and go away. He really didn't care about any of us, he was more worried about the fact that he was getting out of the military. I put my sugery hopes on the back burner for awhile. These past couple of years have brought a lot of change into my life, My daughter is now almost 3 years old. My husband is once again deployed, he will be home soon, after a 14 month deployment. My Father passed away Sept. 07. But now I am ready to try again. I will not be going in to see my PCP until after my husband returns from Iraq, so it will most likely be Oct. until I talk to my new PCP about getting a referral for the surgery. This time, I am going to ask to be referred out and I will not take no for an anwer.

7-22-06---> My PCP has referred me to the surgeon. I was very nervous about being referred, but it was really very simple to be referred here at fort stewart. My PCP is the greatest, she just asked a few simple questions, and said I see no problem in referring you, and I really don't understand why your PCP in Hawaii gave you such a hard time, you meet all the tricare requirements. So anyway, I have to go have some labs done this week, so that I have new ones on file. The surgeon's office is suppose to be calling sometime within the next 2 weeks, to set up an appt. I am so excited, the ball is finally rolling.
6-7-06---> I have been coming to this site for at least 3 years now, I have started this profile, deleted and started it again. This is the last time I am going to start this thing, I will get this surgery done this time.
My name is Julie, I am almost 31 years old, I am married to Ronnie, we have been together for 6 years married for 5, we have 1 child, a daughter Parthenia, she is 9 months old, we are in the process of adopting her, she is the light of our lives. We are stationed at Fort Stewart, GA.
I have been overweight for the majority of my life. I have struggled over the years with many diets, mostly ones I created myself, but I have tried slimfast, South beach, G.I.diet, and every known over the counter diet pill known to man. I have never been on a medically supervised diet, I don't know why no dr. has ever recommend any diet to me, i would have tried anything.
I am 5'8" and weigh around 330 lbs. I am so tired of being fat, I don't have the stamina to keep up with everyday tasks anymore (laundry, basic house cleaning, etc..) I have heel spurs, so I can't stand on my feet very long. I have PCOS. My mother has diabetes, my father has heart problems (I dont have those yet). Being overweight, obese and super obese, runs in my family. On My mom's side, most of the women are all over 300lbs, and the rest all struggle with weight issues. On my dad's side everyone is just plan big.
I am determined to have gastric bypass surgery this time. Before I would go for referrals get denied or told of things I had to do (quit smoking), get pissed off and give up. This time I am going to do whatever it takes to get approved. I am going to quit smoking and I am going in to my PCM with the attitude that you are going to give me a referral or else. I am not taking No for an answer this time. These dr.'s do not live in my body that do not know what it feels like everyday to carry around all this weight and try to be a good wife and mother.
