Describe your behavioral and emotional battle with weight control before learning about bariatric surgery.
I have been on several weight loss programs to control my weight. Weight Watchers, Nutrisystem, Phentermine. They all helped me lose some weight but nothing dramatic. This past year has been very difficult for me health wise and I needed something drastic to get me past the problems. My Specialist actually told me to persue WLS and I listened!

4 weeks post op

It's been 4 weeks since the surgery! I am amazed at how much better I feel in such a short time period.  I have stopped checking my Blood sugars-per drs orders, and started walking like crazy. I recently learned that one lap around my local mall is equal to one mile. I learned it the hard (but good) way. I walked around 4 times thinking it was closer to 1/4 of a mile and wanted to try really hard to walk at least a mile. I thought I was going to pass out from exhaustion and excitement! I have set a new high for myself and I am going to strive to maintain that!!

As for eating, I am doing better at getting in the right amounts of protein, and fluids. Its still a bit of a struggle some days, but I have learned to adapt my menu to accomendate my feelings that day. If I need to drink an extra protein shake instead of eating a planned out dinner, so be it!

I have also attended my first birthday party with cake and snacks and yumminesses and I resisted. It wasnt even hard to do! I had planned my day so that I had my meal before the party and wasnt due to eat until after it was over and I felt great. I even helped the kids with their plates and didnt have any uneasiness about it. I know this may not always be the case, but I was proud of myself that day!

I have lost 44.6# in 6 weeks! (lost 15 during my pre-op liquid phase) I am so proud of myself, and even though I struggle some days I am so glad I made this decion. (this week at least :) )

I can't believe it has been 2 weeks post surgery. I feel so much better than I did last week. I can walk better, longer and faster. I have been experimenting with foods and sticking to my mushies! I am so sick of Protein shakes, pudding and broth!

I have been on bariatricfoodies.com and gotten some ideas and just played around in the kitchen. I am struggling to get the water in. I am not getting enough protein either, but I am worried about the water intake. I mix it up, eat popcicles, warm, cold, doesnt matter, but I am trying!

Weighed in today at 246.8# Amazing!!! I havent been in the 240s since I was pregnant (only person I know that lost weight while pregnant and after. It was stopping the nursing and continuing to eat that killed me!).

Here's to a new year and a new week!

Post-op, first day at home
on December 23, 2011 6:41 am
I had Lap Gastric Bypass surgery on December 20, 2011 @ 10:00am. I have to say I was nervous as HELL. I was pretty confident until I was sitting in the OR waiting room being checked in and processed by all the wonderful and supportive nursing and medical staff at St. Agnes Hospital in MD. I was hit by a sudden overwhelming desire to flee. But Dr. Singh came in and told me that I was making the right choice and he was going to take excellent care of me, and he did!

I do feel i was unprepared for the pain afterwards. It wasn't actual pain, but pressure. The air they fill your belly with sat on top of my belly like a huge ball of pressure. I thought it was the incisions, but it was the air. I was so drgugged up...thinking it was pain, that I wasnt able to walk around the first night. Then the next morning about 5am, I relized it was the gas pain everyone talked about, and decided to give up the pain meds so I could get out of bed. That was the smartest thing ever!!! I then began walking every hour on the hour! It was painful at first, but so worth it after the air started to move and the pressure began to lift.

I was able to start liquids on wednesday, and then had puree foods yesterday (thursday). It wasnt pleasent at all! I am also learning how my new tummy works. I take bigger swollows then I should, and have learned to cut every sip in half.

It is hard to make myself eat, I havent had this feeling since I was home from having a c-section with my son. But I am trying to stick to a schedule and get my fluids and foods in like I am supposed to. I want to avoid any complications if I can!

So far, I have had 30oz water and a choc protein shake. I am working on my next set of fluids and preparing for lunch in my head. What to eat....

Wish me luck!

Day 10 Liquid diet!
on December 14, 2011 12:12 pm
So I had a break down...Last night after being haunted by dreams, commercial and actual food (PIZZA) I snapped! I ate a Weight watchers 1pt cheese stick and dipped it in the No sugar added Marinara sauce. I savored every bite and then cried once I was done!! I felt so guilty I emailed my nutriionist. She told me if was okay and to get back on the wagon and be straight till surgery!

I made it through the weekend and my son's birthday party! That was my biggest worry. I didnt crack then but I guess it built up and I couldnt handle it anymore. I have been good since, drinking the Costco shakes (alternating between chocolate and vanilla) and drinking my water and broths. I can do this!!

ONLY 6 more days until surgery!!

Weigh in:
Day 1:  12/5- 277.2#
Day 8: 12/12- 268.6#

Day 4 liquid diet
on December 8, 2011 4:54 pm
Its been 4 days. I have stuck to the diet drinking my protein shakes (costco brand vanilla and chocolate). I have had some Sugar-free jello and Chicken/Beef broth in between. I am a big water drinker so I havent had any problems keeping to the water requirements. The trouble starts when I come home from work. Preparing dinner for the family is the worst. I find myself wanting to join in and eat the rest of my 2year old sons dinner. I will be relying on the crock pot more and even asked the husband to take over dinner duty. I have been strong, but am getting very nervous now that the weekend is coming! My son's birthday party is this weekend and I need a game plan!!!

1. Keep a shake/water bottle with me at all times!!!
2. Stay away from the kitchen
3. Have Jello available or SF popcicles as an alternative to the cake/ice cream
4. KEEP MY EYES ON THE GOAL!!!!!!!!!

Please give me strength!
